it is easier to feed the hedgie its old food, i say easier cus it knows that it is food. but it would be easier to change its diet when it gets older so no worries rclxms.gif

i tried crushing the worms and also the cat pellet and mix them together. she did eat them but without the worms she refused to eat.

i know worms are like treats to hedgehog, is it bad to keep feeding worms to hedgehog ?
*
well u could just treat the worms like potato chips to human, it is NOT bad just risk of getting obese and the after-effects like liver disease and such but no worries only 1/10 hogs continuously being fed mealworms/treats get fatal diseases. so yeah dont worry too much but do try to make it like only 1/4 of the bowl is mealworm (ie. only mix in a mealworm)

Hi everyone, newbie here..

I have a friend who wants to sell 2 hedgehogs to me, borned 6 sept.
Now stopped drinking milk, but still dono how to eat, can I bring it back or still need to keep it with their mum until?

need advise from you guys smile.gif
*
idk its really up to you, u couxld bring it home now and spend time bonding with it (by time i mean possibly 3-5hours a day) teaching it how to eat and such plus they're really adorable but can be a nuisance if u have lil patience.

another way is justleave it for another month and let its mom to teach it how to eat then it'll be all fine when u take it back

QUOTE(Azurika @ Oct 15 2013, 06:26 PM)
Hi guys, would like to ask. Would there be any particular reason why a hedgehog bites ? And seriously it is very painful and quite a scar has been left (I can see blood). Im quite confident that i have already washed my hands and is just handling her the normal way normal environment I usually do in the past. I read alot on the internet which hedgehog very seldom bites, and if they do it should not break the skin, mind you this 1 didnt wanna let go .... Ive just didnt see her for 4 days and was greated with a big bite >.<

Also, this concerns me when i search up on biting hedgehog
"See your doctor immediately. You will probably need a tetanus shot and possibly some other forms of treatment, including antibiotics. Hedgehog saliva may harbor numerous bacterial diseases."
*
heh seems like u have a biter there too. assuming it is less than a year old it still doesnt know how to differentiate food (mommy's not there to teach or no sense yet) i have a biter too and i dont see a problem 2 months old. it is also probably u FINGER fed it (using your finger to handle food to it insead of your palm).

next, one the other hand medical advice, i'm no doctor, i mean even if i am i would say go for the sake of your money, oh i mean your health mind me. but if i were u i wouldnt really panic:
-c'mon u're feeding high quality cat food man. not like its eating shit right.
-its harboured at home (unless u using dirty bedding, i change everyday)
however, if u're really paranoid then go ahead and take a shot. but i believe that if u think your hog is clean then i think its okay, just keep your hand sanitized. i have a bottle of hand sanitizer beside the cage to be used once i've done handling.

solution? i think it would best try not to let it bite, i usualy let it smell my finger (move away quickly if it tries to bite, i'm too adept at this shit already haha) and give it a soft threat (blow it or knock its head, dont let that be a cause of retardness or death really) if it bites. it is best not to finger feed it in my opinion, cus mine bites because of that, lesson learned.

pretty! what u call naughty, i'd redefine as "their nature". hedgehogs are noctural creatures, true they can be active at morning this makes them a fun pet to have as they are ready to play anytime!

mine was actually smart enough to "get" that litter pan use 80% of the time it does poo and pee on the litter pan, still dont forget they are animals, they dont really know stuff they just do stuff when they feel like it (biting, pooping, scratching, digging). get ready for heads up they probably would just poop and pee on u when they feel like it too. idk if mine's a male or what he can actually "keep" its pee, never got once pee on me while some people ones do complain that whenever they pick em out they just greet them with poop.

wood pellets, yes it is good to have them but i dont really use those as i use newspapers as bedding easy for daily change. all in all, everything u did is perfect for the hog nothing i could actually say.

green poop, i'd say it is totally normal for the first couple of weeks, probably a month is still normal, but if all the time then maybe get some heads up. still mine never poop or pee whenever out of the cage tongue.gif clever boy. additionally, u could crumple up (loosely) a newspaper and throw it in, watch it dig in and sleep or push it around. newspaper because easy to get, easy to change.

Hi guys, just to check is there any guide to how much we have to feed our hedgehog ? biggrin.gif mine is roughly 3 1/2 months d ....
*
depends on you really, want it to become fat or not? fat then each mealworm per day, about idk, 1 or 2 TEASPOON of food (say royal canin's size) specific then 30 biji.

as for mine i do few meals a day (saje2 kacau him to wake up for breakfast lunch dinner supper, feed bit by bit) if i busy then str8 morning 1 go. mealworms when i feel like it, about 2-3 ekor every 2-3 days (can say each a day la)

in the process of litter training my girl, will be a long long journey to go. everyday i came back to her and there are poops everywhere in her cage blink.gif
especially when she's eating, she can poo at the same time shocking.gif im a bit worried of her, since her poop has been watery for the past two days..wondering is it something wrong with her diet? or is it just the environment sad.gif
will bath her later rclxms.gif

u're worrying too much haha. its just being 2 days give it some time. even if its used to u, give it a lil shake or scare then u'll see green poop (if incase u miss her greenish poop) i think its perfectly normal, but it should not last, like if 10 out of 10 times its green poop then it is a problem.

Hye all,

Im a new owner! My hedgehog has been with me for 5 days now but it stopped eating or drinking for the past 3 days. Im getting scared that it might be sick cause when i got it, it was friendly. Now, it just curls up into a ball and vibrates and wont leave her hole ever. Im not sure what is happening.

Also, can anyone please tell me where can I get Aspen bedding? I've been to a few big pet stores and none of them seems to know what the hell is Aspen bedding. I have no choice but to buy the cedar and pine bedding for now.  sad.gif  sad.gif  sad.gif

Please help!!
*
u seems to be confused about what to do with your hog, dint do your homework eh, i'll help u out this time
1. remove bedding, in my opinion cedar is pretty dangerous for a hog, read this thread's first page.
2.just use newspaper
3.if u just got it, it is just being nervous, try to leave it alone
4.hog shaking is normal, it may look like it is vibrating, somehow they're just breathing fast (sniffing surrounding)
5.or your vibrate could also means it is huffing and pufing, it is a sign of "LEAVE ME ALONE" from your hog. it is not sick it is indeed very very stressed.

Guys, my hedghog seems to be scratching herself abit lately, is this signs that i should start to bath her d ? Shes about 4 months old now, not sure if she had any bath in the past. I do change the bedding roughly 5 days once
*
i change my bedding (newspaper) everyday and he scrathes himself everyday haha. hog scratching itself is just like us scratching our hair. their skin is dry thats why it gets itchy sometimes. it is only a bad news if there is over scratching like signs of redness or bleeding. so dont worry

Hi,

I got my HH 2weeks already, age about 2months from its DOB,was feeding the past cat food given by the previous owner, colourful one, green and red, now I changed it to RC33, just bought from shop just now, i bought the smaller pack, 1kg @ RM16.. is it not suitable for it or??? and it seldom drink water, why huh? I thought HH should drink lots of water??
*

hog eat almost anything they can find so no worries. if it doesnt it is probably because it is too young to know it is edible, give it some time. it is up to them of when to drink, or if it is a concern, probably your water bottle/plate is hard to reach for it? if they've just being idle all the time obviously they dont need that much water, if they maraton everyday then they'd be gobbling down dem waters laugh.gif

Hedgehod still quilling at about 5.5mth? I constantly finds quills in the cage.
*
actually a hog quilling loses more quills than that lol. thats just normal quill loss on my opinion. every single time i look at my hog there are sure to be quills on the floor every single day. and every single time when its not doing anything, it jist scratches itself boringly.

i'd say dont worry too much really, also see the 'balls' at the end of the quill? indicates normal drops instad of cause of mifes. think of it as a normal hair loss, u do lose hair like every day, in fact probably every hour, dont you?

if u're really worried, try to use cleaner bedding. i use newspaper, easy to dispose easy to obtain, clean because changeable everyday.

these are just my opinions, if u're still worried then do what u have to do, but i believe the reason u came here is to avoid another pointless vet trip no? if i havent remembered wrongly u were the same person worrying bout mites last time aint it? smile.gif

u can try the one @ sunway pyramid (they look like they really took care of their livestock) , tropicana mall (not so recommended, dont ask why wouldnt wanna bad mouth them in the open). however the best is to get from a breeder from the lowyat forum pet store section. this is the hedgehog help/chill section

QUOTE(Iddy @ Oct 30 2013, 11:10 AM)
is it okay if I feed little amounts of wet kitten food to my hedgies as treats? What other things are allowed as treats for hedgies besides mealworms/superworms?
*
well in my opinion, a hog eats almost everything, including you if you're dead and all the meat is exposed that is. so yes u can feed, but i wouldnt really say is it good or bad, but too much water for a hog wouldnt be too good. i think its better to stick to dry food, if tight on budget u can try human biscuits or such too. but please no dairy, preservatives, oil and all refer the first page guide for heggie food or google. for treats other than worms, no superworms btw risky, u could always try fruits (not grapes), dried bread (a few mins exposed to air it will become crispy, dont let it be mouldy duh), also no nuts please, hamster food is a bad choice. probably jacob biscuits i guess? but i usually just feed dried bread no oil no preservative. but mealworms arent really that expensive rather affordable and its really not that disgusting to handle, dead ones.

I tried giving little cuts of apple to my hedgehog, she dont seem to touch those thou ..

Btw, i understand we need to trip their nails rite? I doubt mine will sit back while i do so, any tips on how can I get to to maybe calm down or something?
*
they would usually just take their "old" usual food, so if for a sudden change of diet, it wouldnt take it for some time until it is hungry, which in other words "forced" to eat the food. another less torturous way is mix the new food with its old food for easier acceptance.

u could get hog wheels with pre installed "sand-paper-like" rollings which is inside the wheel already, when it runs, the friction will shorten its nails. if manually, yes it is a pain in the neck to cut it's nails

Pre-installed sand paper like...wouldn't it hurt their paws?

Btw, is Orijen and Blackwood a good quality food? Or RC still the best? Just surveying some brand.
*
sand paper like, i dont think its really sand paper cus i havent actually used one. but hedgehogs are desert animals so isnt it already in their blood running on sands? i mean, even running on road and such. however i dint really trim their nails ever.

as for food yeah they could take blackwood (still depending on them, they could but if they would i cant tell), orijen i've never heard of that brand before but still worth a try for a mini repack or so
