OK, thanks.. Seems like most shop in KL, hard for me to get... Let me see if those brands are in Melaka (my area) too...
*
Owh you're from Melaka blink.gif
I'm sure there are pet stores that sell good supplies there.

Edit: Nova by all means take out the bar! >< The hamster's leg could get caught within the bars and injure itself. It's best to remove all bars if possible (except for the cage itself, unless you can change to storage boxes as cages)

QUOTE(infernoaswen @ Jun 22 2013, 06:28 PM)
pretty much impossible. I had the same experience...blowing will stop them temporary only but they will continue biting later. You can give them apple wood, they like that.

As for biting the metal bar, the only solution is to change to plastic aquarium/storage box.
*
Ah apple wook okay.
The metal bar is because of the metal stand that holds up the running wheels. I've temporarily taken that one out, will replace with a plastic one soon.

But the metal bar is 1cm width, will it hurt the leg?

I am planning to breed the winter white hamster, so looking how to give the best condition for them... If they feels better without the metal bar and in contact with the bedding, I will sure to do it ^^

There's a wooden bridge for you to cross the river. The wood planks are arranged one meter apart. Don't look down and walk straight across. Fun? biggrin.gif

Now imagine your entire house flooring with wood planks arranged like that. thumbup.gif

Hey guys, today my most favorite robo, Pepper, died peacefully because of old age. He is around 1 1/2 years old to date. So sad because among all the robos I have, he is the most friendly and tame, not afraid by human, and always calm. He is the first robo I ever got.

From the moment I saw him in pet shop, I already knew he is gonna be my best pet friend. Always accompany me, and always come back to me when I called his name. And so, I buried him right in front of my house, under a tree. Now I've lost a good friend, my first pet hammie and my little angel.

I always knew he is suffering of old age. He starts to get slow and easily tired. He eat lesser than usual, become thinner. He also breathes heavily like it is hard to breathe. But he always recognizes me, always likes to get on my palm and let me stroke his back gently.

Now I'm gonna miss his sweet friendly face every morning. He always knows when I'm coming to his cage and always excited to see me.

R.I.P Pepper, 2012-2013. I always love you. I hope I've always been a good pet owner to you, as you being a lovely pet for me.

Oh no >< I'm so sorry for your lost.
He died of old age, happily. You should feel accomplished to give him a happy life.
Now go plant a seed on his ground, make it bloom into something nice. smile.gif

After I remove the metal bar underneath, seems like my hammy is eating the bedding.. Is this normal and safe?
*
Nah they won't eat it.
Either their just storing in their mouth for fun or they're bringing it into their hiding place.

I have had approximately 5 batches of babies born in my house over these past 6 years.
If you wanna breed, go ahead. The rewards are really adorable. biggrin.gif

1. Cost - Time, money, storage, effort. I think this one's pretty manageable la shouldn't be much of a problem. But you do need to watch out for their environments. Some batches died do to my carelessness, like spinning wheel kept hitting the bottle till there was no water. Other than that, this one's manageable.

2. Genetic defects - I don't think this is that common is it? None of my babies were defect. Even my winter gold (what you guys call the hybrid) hamsters, I bred them till the 3rd generation. Just that the last one standing after almost 2 years died of cancer. I think I can blame it on the bedding I used.

3. Emotion-wise - Well what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Everytime my hamster dies it becomes easier to handle my emotions. At least I know I've given them the best life I could. Mom eating their babies? Aiya it's nature la, that's how it runs. If the babies are weak, or the mother's a bad one (I had one like that which ate all her babies), then there's nothing you can do right?

In human life you can't control the birth of defect children. You can't control accidents that take lives. You can't control when and how the uncertainty of money hits you.
As long as you know what you're doing and you're dedicated, by all means go for it.
If things go wrong, well that's how life is, right? smile.gif

(I've had quite a rough month emotionally, have became more of a realist now. Guess it does affect me how I see things.)

Guys, my male hamster has a 'patch' near his anus there. Is this normal?

I thought that part was suppose to be covered fully with the white fur except for a small hole?

[attachmentid=3502987][attachmentid=3502988]

That, am not too sure. Should be normal, he looks small, that "part" would be expanding over the weeks. laugh.gif

I give mixed seeds as main meal for my hamsters, but they only seed sunflower seed and corns... They wont touch other seeds in it... I know both sunflower and corns are not a very healthy food for them, so what should I do?

I also give them lettuce and carrot once in a while..
*
I give my girl the Classic food from Living World, they sell in Pets Wonderland, she eats everything.
I read before that you can refuse to refill the food bowl until they eat everything, but I don't think I'll recommend that :/
Other than that, you can try different brands of hamster food to see whether he eats everything or not.

since your hamster only pees at a specific spot, buy a toilet (i.e. http://petshack.com.my/webshaper/store/vie...roductItem=402) and put it at that corner, fill it up with more absorbent type of litter, such as woody pet and just clean the toilet daily... woody pet are wood that are in pellet form, when it absorbs urine, it turn into flakes which you can sieve it out..
when choosing a toilet, corner units are preferred as hamsters like to reserve different corners, one of which for urinating.. i personally really like the corner toilet from habitrail

my hamster is toilet trained and because of that, i can keep him in my room.. no smell at all!
can buy online
http://petshack.com.my/webshaper/store/vie...ProductItem=410
*
One thing I notice about my girl is, when her food bowl is near the toilet, she WILL pee in the bowl also.
So keep food bowls away from the toilet yeah.

If you see them stuffing the bedding into their mouths, they most probably aren't eating it, they're just storing in their mouth to be brought to their little hiding place. My girl does that.

anyway, I found diff type of beddings for them. it's like those veg stick that found in hamster food, just that thicker and longer. can buy them at petsmore
*
Have you tried them?
They do look good and natural, but I'm just afraid some of those grass are very sharp. :/

no no, not the grass. It's called wood pellet bedding. so far so good...just a bit noisy when they dig it. Personally felt it's much better than wood shavings
*
OH sorry my bad haha.
Right I use those now as my girl's toilet bedding. It's much better than the wood shavings, but yes it does get noisy. It's also easier to maintain as you can scoop the good ones out, and the powdery ones you can throw away.
One thing I don't like about that is that when I see my hamster walking on those, it feels uncomfortable. Imagine yourself walking on those big nice pebble stones people put on the floor for decoration, somewhat similar situation.

I highly recommend the paper-based bedding with good bacteria that is sold in the pet store in Ikano/Bangsar/Sunway Pyramid. PLC I think. I even forgot the bedding name, but it's very good.

What could it be? Could it be an ear wart or something?

Oh one thing I would highly recommend is those storage bins from Jusco/Carrefour.
I switch from wired cage, to plastic tanks, to storage bin.

Firstly, storage bins is easier to move around if there's wheels below. The material is also not as hard and fragile as the plastic fish tanks. I personally feel it's somewhat much lighter to carry storage bins. Plus, I think you can find storage bins that are much bigger than the plastic ones (the biggest so far is 2ft x 1ft? I'm selling mine though, there's pics there). It's also much easier to clean because now I fill it up with hot water from the toilet, then drag it all the way to the balcony then only start washing after a while.

One let down is that it is semi-transparent, but that hasn't affected me when I wanna see my girl playing in there. Not much issues I'd say. Ventilation, my room is quite small so the ceiling fan is practically on top of the cage.

Storage bins may cost more, but it's definitely worth saving all the trouble and pain later. I'll take a photo of my girl's cage if you want to see.

Ah, so nice to have an obedient dog. I can't have any pets bigger than hamsters, condo rules. sad.gif

Speaking of which, just wanna ask you guys, what is the most memorable event you had with your hamsters?
It can be a happy, sad, or a scary one.

As for myself, I remember my hamster escaped from the cage, it was at the balcony, and it fell into the drain. ><
Quite a deep one. Luckily she just stood around there, didn't go further down the pipes.
It was really scary, it was night time, raining VERY heavily with thunder.
After 30 mins, I decided to put my arm in it and the moment I got hold of her paws, I carefully pull her up as fast as I could.
Because I managed to save her, later in the years she had 9 beautiful babies. :')

I blogged about it 4 years ago here (http://thatluxurylife.blogspot.com/2009/12/life-changing-moment.html)
(Excuse the language used and the stuffs I used to say there, that was me waaaaaay back then haha.)

What are your stories? smile.gif
Would love to hear them.

ngaw! your story is so comel! smile.gif I live in a Condo too.. lucky for me my Shih Tzu rarely / almost never barks lol.
He just looks at you with his huuge eyes. for mine, my hammie escaped once with a litter of her babies. found one baby here, there everywhere.
but found the last 2 with her under a rack in the kitchen smile.gif super cute~
*
What??? Babies everywhere in the house with a Shih Tzu and they're found alive? Hahaha that's interesting.
My condo also has an elderly lady with a Shih Tzu, she carries it out using the baby pram to avoid suspicion haha.

I used to use wood pellet bedding for my hammies but quite kesian coz she really loves digging around & its kinda troublesome to filter the pellets.. keep the ones that havent broken down etc when i do cleaning.

Now i use this : https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hpho...267930203_n.jpg

Its really soft and they love building "hills" and sleeping on it. And i only change it once in 1.5-2 weeks. No smell at all smile.gif

Here's a pic of her snoozing! smile.gif

Btw, their hammie food is finishing up and i don't really like the current one i'm feeding them with, purchased at Nilufar. Any recommendations for Syrians?

Thanks in advanced!
*
Hey be careful to check your package first before it's too late. My bedding package once was very very very dusty (literally like dust) and there was pieces of rubber bits in it. It was quite disappointing that the store said they can't do anything about it since the entire batch is like that.

Anyways, I'm feeding my girl Living World's food from Pets Wonderland. My girl loves it.
