My hamster change bedding twice a week but still have bad smell.. any idea how to solve this problem sad.gif
*
I would advise not to change so often because when you change the bedding, the hamster lost his scent on his stuff therefore it started marking again. The more often you change, the more it will mark therefore causing worse smell.

How big is your cage and how much bedding do you use? You can clean it weekly or bi weekly if there's more bedding.

Is your hamster male or female? Does it smell strongly of pee or it's scent?

Never buy stuff from there & boycott the shop. You guys will be supporting them in a way even though you just buy supplies from there.

As for discussion why PLC is more expensive, I believe is due to maintenance cost. Just look at the cage they keep the hamsters, always full with food, water & fresh bedding. I never see any injured/sick hamsters in there as well unlike petsmore. On top of that they are using homefriends bedding eventhough they got cheap bedding in stock. This shows that they ensure the hamster lives in an excellent environment. I am referring to sunway pyramid branch, not sure about others.

Empire (subang) petsmore on the other hand stinks, bedding wet with pee. Can sometimes see sick hamsters in it & they uses cheap bedding which is actually not very suitable for baby hamsters. Worst is they dont even have wheel in the cage. This is my experience for the past few months ago, not sure about now coz never been to petsmore for quite some time.
*
I agree with you. Homefriends bedding cost about RM36 a bag and they're using it for their hamster (also promoting la). I been to 3 petsmore and I just had to walk away. There were hammies with red eyes and loss fur and it's just heart breaking.

Wet tail is diagnosed for young syrians. Dwarves are not prone to wet tail. Is he pooping and eating well?

It's important to make sure the hamster is getting gets water. I usually tap the tip every night before I go to bed to make sure water comes out. I would say the bottle is leaking.

I myself had an experience where I refilled the bottle and it was fine the whole night but in the morning, his bedding was wet and bottle was empty. Poor guy.

I think somehow the ball tip might have gotten loose and sometimes when he pushed the ball up to drink, it might not come down and cover up the hole again properly.

One of the simplest and cheapest chew you can give your hamster is the cardboard roll in the middle of your toilet paper. Make sure it's not scented.

Yeah. We're very close, and she's the first hamster I teach how to do tricks. smile.gif

I think I understand what you mean. Sometimes when I put my boy on my hand and slowly stroke him with the other hand. He'll stay still or sometimes lay down like he's enjoying the massage. Then after a bit, he'll start to rub his mouth on my hand?

It's like he's nudging the bottom of his face forward backwards. Doesn't look like it involved tongue though but like rubbing his mouth on my hand. Something like that? Then after that, he'll groom himself.

Looks like they're grooming us right? very cute.

last 2 weeks... my hamster give birth to 5 pups... after 2 days she ate them all.

Am i doing it wrong? I did not remove the male... i put a lot of tissues (shread)
*
remove the male!

presence of the male will make the mother stressed out and cull her puppies. the male should not be in the same cage at all. he can also make her pregnant right after the pups are born and this will weaken her body - possible outcome :- unhealthy litter or death

also, if mother hamster give birth de, remove the wheel as it could seriously injured the puppies should they crawl underneath and the mother decided to have a run.

Yeah yeah! But instead of rubbing her mouth, it's more like teeth cuz can feel her teeth.
It's really cute and feel so loved by them haha.
*
I don't think my hamster uses his teeth cause when I looked, it's more like his bottom lips. He usually rubbed my palm when I sayang his back and he'll stay still, blink and look at me. Sometimes he sleeps off also.

My little fatty, Pepper, had to be taken to see a vet last Saturday. He has some kind of rash at the side of his left cheek and appears swollen. Vet checked and said he is over-stuffing food in his cheek, then uses his legs to scratch it to push the food. The funny thing is the vet help him to vomit out all the food, went inside to mix some meds solution for him. While waiting I put him back to the carrier box (where he vomit the food earlier on). About 5 mins later, the vet came back to give him a drop of antibiotic, I realized that the food that he vomited was gone. I thought that maybe it falls on the side of the box or something. The vet grabbed him and wanted to drop the solution in his mouth, this greedy fatty vomit back all the food he just vomited. Haha, now I know how greedy is a hammy.  laugh.gif  biggrin.gif

QUOTE(zenyusof @ Apr 2 2013, 04:05 AM)
I got some questions;

1. Is offering timothy hay a good idea for hammies?
2. I'm thinking of switching my wood bedding to paper bedding. Used it before but can't tahan the price monthly, that's why using wood bedding. Any suggestion for cheaper and less harmful alternatives?
*
1. Yes, you can offer timothy hay to your hammies but make sure the sharp pieces don't injure them cause they might want to pouch it. Maybe offer a bit and monitor for a day. Maybe break it to smaller pieces. That's what I usually do when I try to test new food on mine. Other food to offer :- green beans, bean sprouts (tauge), broccoli, cauliflower

2. I've been using paper bedding all this while as I'm afraid that wood bedding might harm my hammie as I'm not convinced of the wood that they use. As far as I've seen, we don't have aspen here. Pine and cedar are toxic to them and will cause respiratory problem. As pinching wallet as it is, I bought the paper bedding for him. Last I spent on bedding was few months ago about RM 100 ++ . Bedding change every two weeks. Give more so that it can tahan more to absorb the smell and also for the hammies to burrow and tunnel like in their natural habitat.

I went to USJ Animal Clinic at USJ 8, Subang Jaya. The doc had a hard time to measure the correct amount of antibiotics for my little fatty. Cuz she said too much could kill, the hammie's too small. She gotta mix the normal animal antibiotics with some water to dilute it. Gave me a syringe full of the solution and only feed my hammie once a week. Afraid the dosage too much. Haha biggrin.gif

Oh okay. How's the vet there? Hamster experienced?

I'm finding for a just-in-case vet who knows how to handle hamster cases

Excellent. The vet, rather looks surprised when I came with my hammie and said it is seldom people bring hammie for medical attention. But she is very knowledgeable about hamsters, hamster type and possible diseases. She knows how to hold my hammie well as it didn't struggle when she tries to drop the antibiotic into its mouth (could be possible that my hammie never rejects anything when it comes to food). She even taught me how to drop the meds on my own. Charged me RM35 but for me it's ok since it's a seldom occurrence. I head that in US usually hammie owners bring their hammies to vet for yearly check-ups and they didn't even care the cost. Thanks for your tips; Imma make my own paper beddings, like school project before.  brows.gif

You're welcome. Make sure your paper bedding does not have ink onit. Can I have the vets address ?

can walk the hamster... like dog

I would not suggest this hamster leash actually. Cause their body small and usually they don't like to be tied up since they move their arms and legs a lot. Can cause blood circulation problem if not careful.

This is bad idea, you will hurt the fella's backbone and legs. Plus, if your hammy are tamed and close to you, he won't run away if released. I always release my roborovsky around my room, he will only walk around near me and wouldn't go far.
*
Adding to the trust thing, if your hamster is tame and trust you .. this thing might break their trust to you .. cause they see it as something that will hurt them and make them uncomfortable and you, the owner is putting it on them .. wink.gif

QUOTE(yuuyee @ Apr 10 2013, 03:10 PM)
Hello everyone! I have 2 female winter white dwarf hamsters in one cage. I bought them together and initially they are fine together, with occasional squeaking (I found information on net stating that this is normal as they are interacting).

However as time past (1 months+), they squeak more and when I look up to them more closely, I can see that one is bullying another, and the one being bullied is the one who squeaks a lot. So in this case, I shall have to separate them? Any idea that I can make them well together? Hmmm...

* posted an adoption notice in "Pets Adoption" as well, somehow if separating them is the best choice that I can make, I think I shall have to let go one of them :'( *
*
I think you have to separate them but don't give one up just yet. You can actually just get a storage box and make a mesh wire lid for her. This is what I do for my boy.

user posted image

The storage box is only RM 50. It might be a bit big but it's affordable.

If one is bullying the other, then you have to separate them cause they might fight and eventually injure each other. Do consider keeping her if possible.

If not, PM me the photo and I'll try to help you find a loving owner smile.gif

Thanks for your reply! smile.gif
Is this the storage box that we usually see it in supermarket and can be used to keep any stuffs in it?
Wow, it seems very nice and spacious! Can I know how many hammies are living in it?smile.gif
Will changing to a bigger cage enables them to live together? *thinking*
Hmmm... I am still a student and living in a hostel room.
Going to leave here in a few months time, so it's kinda hard for me to have another cage with me as I shall need to transport everything home.
At this moment, I put one of them inside a round basin with some sands and food, but it is not so spacious though, but still it's better to put them together. They squeak whenever they meet :'(
Thank you for your offer, shall consider it smile.gif
*
Yup, that's the one we see in the supermarket. I can't guarantee that your hamsters will not fight if they are in a bigger cage cause they might still be territorial.

I only have one boy there cause I was afraid he might fight with others. You should separate them at the moment and give the other hamster it's necessities first. Bedding, food and drink.
