Can anyone please tell me what is the standard thickness for flat bar door and window grille. The grille supplier told me standard is about 0.5". This is about as thick as a hollow bar. shocking.gif How can it be?

Maybe he's really generous with his steel smile.gif 0.5 inches of solid steel ... the grille must be damn heavy.

0.5" is more likely the width of the flat bar.
Sure you did not hear wrongly? tongue.gif

0.5" width or 0.5" thick hmm.gif hmm.gif
seriously, if its 0.5" thick, we call it solid bar not flat bar tongue.gif

normally grill guy will give u 3mm(thk) x 12mm/16mm flat bar, if u got for 5mmx25mm flat bar, price & the weight of the grills also rclxub.gif rclxub.gif sweat.gif

pic of my house grill taken just now, 5mm x 25mm flat bar on 1"x2" RHS

the std SHS/RHS 0.5" thickness only <=1mm, so its very light and can be cut easily.

I think everyone is right, supplier must be refering to width not thickness. But I did comment that with that 'thickness' its going to look like hollow bar and he said is standard 'thickness'. But now I'm sure is miscommunication, will ask him again. First house so clueless about everything! blink.gif Thanks everyone.

Jo-da, your grille looks like flat bar with the width instead of the thickness facing out. Is it because your grill design is horizontal and vertical bar? I see a lot of flat bar design with horizontal lines only.

Yes , I think the si-fus here are correct, It should be 0.5" width (inside hollow).
I went to the grille guys previously and they show me 0.5" X 0.5" hollow square metal tube / bars.
There is also 1" X 0.5" hollow square metal metal tube / bars.

My Grill contractor quote me with the following description, so is much easier.

1. for your front door outer frame 1"x1", inter frame 1"x2", gap 4" for
vertical bar, gap 2" for vertical bar

2. door n window grille: material size 1"x1/2", see from front 1"

3. gate: material size 1"x2", gap 1", see from front 1", frame 1 1/2"x 2 1/2"

4. fencing: material size 1"x1/2", gap 2", see from front 1"

usually thickness is 1.2mm for infill 1" x 2", and smaller usually 1mm thickness

Do they give you option for hot dip galvanize?
