Quick question for Sifus here:-

For VLAN bridge/switch purpose alone, which is better option in terms of performance - MicroTik RB250GS or DIR-615?

For router purpose, MicroTik RB750G vs D-Link DIR-655, which one do you think is better?

Basically I am having a DIR-655 on Streamyx now and is upgrading to Unifi, and wanted to see how I can have the best equipment setup and still use back the DIR-655 if possible.

Thanks in advance.

RB250GS and DIR-615 will have identical performance as a VLAN bridge. RB750G will be better than DIR-655 as a router.. it gives you full control over your network (layer 7 filtering, QoS, b/w limiting, etc.) but you need to learn how to use it properly. Only downside is that you need to pair it with a wifi AP since it doesn't have any onboard wifi. You could use the RB750G + DIR-655 as a wifi AP perhaps.
*
Thank you Rizvanrp for your comment and advice, now I have a clearer picture on what to do with the DIR-655.

Added on September 9, 2011, 2:55 pmJust read that Unifi now comes with the TM-RND instead of DIR-615.

In this case can the TMRND be configured as a VLAN bridge, and would its performance as a VLAN bridge at par with tbe MikroTik RG250?

Thanks.

That HyppTV screen resolution should put under 16:9 otherwise it gets stretched when watching on HDTV even it's connected with HDMI.
*
How do you do that? Thanks.

Personally I think its best to walk-in to TM Point to terminate the phone line / Streamyx by yourself instead of getting the installer to do it for you.

I terminated both my phone line and Streamyx account the day after Unifi is installed, and I get an "acknowledgement" slip, and was told whatever billing item will be pro-rated based on the date of termination.

Also, I asked the officer about returning the old TM single line phone, it was mentioned that there will be a penalty of RM60 (deduct from deposit) if it is not returned within ~30 days.

Was told that final bill with outstanding amount (+ or -) will be sent, if there is negative balance (after deducting deposit amount) then a cheque will be mailed to you. If not then just pay the balance.

So, to avoid disappointment and surprise in your bill, best is just DIY smile.gif

would it be possible to change the rechargeable battery (dect phone) to another brand like eneloop etc. ?
*
If your DECT phone uses AAA, then you can use any rechargeable AAA battery.
Am not very sure about this, but Eneloop batteries *may* need to be charged by the Sanyo recommended charger for optimum performance; hence the DECT phone base station might not be best for charging Eneloop?

Right. Some of the download quota imposed by local ISPs are really GILA! 15GB? 20GB? 30GB? What's the point of high speed if you can't download anything with it? Just for normal surfing you can use up 0.5 GB a day or 15GB a month and that is just for one user. Our local ISPs have lost touch of how little a GB is these days with content rich internet.
*
No they didn't lost touch, they just want to rip us off.

Q: Now I have VIP5, lets say I upgrade to VIP10 later, and then after a few months downgrade back to VIP5, will there be penalty because of the downgrade? Thanks.

anybody encounter incident whr the installers never turn up on the installation date?

my installation is supposed to be 2.30pm 2day but now its 3.20pm and still no signs of them and any calls

2 days ago unifi centre did call me and verify and installation date
*
My experience just 2 weeks ago, supposed to be 2.30pm but no one shows up.
3.30pm - receive call from installer, saying that he will be late, will arrive at 4.30pm
5.00pm - still not arrive, I call back to his handphone, he said still installing at another location, later only can come over. I then call Unifi hotline to complain, customer service say will try to see if can find back-up team / area supervisor.
5.30pm - another installer call up, say he will try to arrange back-up. I think he is supervisor.
5.35pm - he call again, say someone will come over within 30 minutes
6.00pm - he call again, saying they arrive the apartment wiring room, doing some wiring work
6.15pm - junior installer arrive, with box of equipment....start installing.....
6.45pm - all done.

here from their website:
**TM would like to inform all customers that all calls to the TM UniFi Centre at 1- 300 88 1222 / 1221 will be subject to a charge of 8 cents for the 1st 2 mins of the call and 4 cents per minute subsequent. 1-300 numbers are used by many companies in the service industry. As this service is regulated, the call charges are as mentioned. The call plan offered through the UniFi service offers FREE (for VIP package) nationwide calls to all TM fixed lines only, 24x7. These are for the normal TM fixed lines (PSTN numbers).

i think i just wrong about the minute.... my bad.... first 2 minute will be charged at 8sen/min...
*
This type of chargeable call is named "Premium Call" and is typically used by Value Added Services (VAS) such as fortune telling and sex chat operators around the world! Because the call provide VAS, hence the operator charges for the call.

But for TM's case it is just a customer service contact number!!!!! I don't understand the logic behind.

TM will have the incentive NOT to answer the call and put you on hold for as long as they wish because you are paying to be put on hold.

Unifi calls to TM fixed line are free, but why need to pay to call the customer service? Think about it, you call customer service because there is a problem in the service they provide, but they deter you from calling them. So its like telling you to go away, don't disturb.

How else could TM screw us around?

First you are given RM500 tax relief for internet; assuming your effective (after all reliefs and deductions) tax rate is 15%, then the tax savings works out to be RM75 per year.

Now if you have VIP5 at RM149/month = RMRM1788/year; 6% tax = RM107.30.

And why those prepaid mobile users don't have to pay 6% tax?

Why prepaid mobile user have to?

Afterall, we should ask, why do we pay 6%? I really doubt the need for us to pay 6%. Why don't they charge 6% from telco instead of end user? WHY?
*
The 6% is service tax, so it applies to all types of services such as phone, astro, restaurant, workshop, etc. Post paid mobile bill has 6% tax, but the govt is deferring the 6% tax on prepaid mobile services.

Telcos (like all business entity / individual) pay tax on earnings (income for individuals). The 6% is targeted at consumers. Similar to GST in Singapore (and other countries), you pay tax on goods and services purchased (with exemption on some items).

You are taxed (PCB) before you received your income, after that you are taxed when you spend your income.

Correct me if i am wrong. If there's no tax why they put a disclaimer inside the unifi bill portion? are they trolling?

This is the full image from my unifi page. Its not shopped / doctored

I think if its read correctly, it says the 6% service tax is on "taxable services", which means the tax is on telephony and IPTV subscription portion only and excludes the basic internet part.

Anyone used the "official" Unifi speed test site? http://www.unifi.my/unifi/index.php?option...d=75&Itemid=269

I lodge a complaint with Unifi that my upload speed is slow (~1.5Mbps based on speedtest.net result) and they asked my to test with the above link. The test results (multiple time) using the official link shows close to 5Mbps, but speedtest.net shows only ~1.5Mbps.

My DUMeter and Net Meter both shows throughput that's similar to speedtest.net.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks.
