i watched it for 15min and gave up!
in recorded chinese history, there are a few epics or their extracts made into movies and tv series every few years or so, again and again. one is three kingdoms, another is yang generals.

so is hongmenyan 鸿门宴, an episode in the chu-han contention period - the liu bang-xiang yu-han xin story. i just watched this last supper 2012. this version is different, good. not as much action as the older ones but embodies the story very well. excellent script. good costumes and settings - more authentic and not overly done.

this white vengeance 2011 version is also not bad but is more action oriented, more straightforward.

watch both if you like these chinese historical dramas!

I have watched White Vengeance (2011) though I think Leon Lai is miscast...

I have not got a chance to watch The Last Supper yet...

Will let youse know when I have

by the way, there is "saving general yang 2012" with cheng ekin. adam cheng too there. forget this one, poor show.

Hahaha. I did a review of that... I kinda like that show... Brought my mom to the cinema to watch that and surprisingly she did not fall asleep!!

It does not have much depth, but as an action flick it is okay...

It is a FAR cry from Legendary Amazons (2011)... which was all kinds of wrong....

Turner & Hooch (1989)

Tom Hanks is probably one of the most prolific actor of our time.

He had done many entertaining and big movies.

Having said that he also several... how can I word this, superfluous comedies in the 1980s...

One of them is this and the other that comes to mind is Splash...

I'm sure if I have the time, I can think of more, but onwards with the review.

This movie is NOT reference material, when it comes to HD.

I do have to confess, that I'm a dog person and as superfluous as this movie is, I like it.

It is silly, it is predictable and most importantly, it has a happily every after ending.

It's the 80s kiddies, just go with it and you'll enjoy this!

Oh, 80s was also a time where there was alot of ideas pinching because in the same year, James Belushi was in another movie called K-9!!

Okay, movie just finished, I was wrong, the movie do not have a happily every after ending... but it is okay...

Watch it and you'll know what I mean.

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

Because I have already done a review of this, I'll not talk much about the movie itself

For my original review please goto:

My Original Review

What most people what to know here is the PQ and AQ and I'm pleased to announce, REFERENCE MATERIAL!!

This movie has a "blue" sheen and I believe it is on purpose (art director/Director of Photography??) to highlight the cold and distance relationship between John and Jack (my assumption)

Adding on to my original review, here are a few pet peeves about this movie

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

All in all, I still like the fourth installment best

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

I'm only 20 mins into the movie, and already I'm bowled over

WHAT A SPECTACLE!!!

Now I really wish I had watched this in the cinema, in 3D...

Sam Raimi and James Franco.

I do believe Sam is trying to make up to James for NOT giving him the lead in Spidey!! biggrin.gif

This movie cost USD 215,000,000 to make, and it really REALLY shows!

No don't get me wrong, the first Wizard of Oz, was made by MGM (the biggest movie company of during the time) and it is now a classic. Disney had always been "envious" of that.

They made Return to Oz (1985) a supposed sequel but the general public never really "warmed" to it.

To amend that, the have since release this.

Having said that, I really have a feeling that Sam Raimi is trying to pull a Tim Burton... Only brighter... laugh.gif

Okay. let me finish this movie and I'll be back!!

**** Update 7th June 2013 ****

My, intermission are long ain't it!! laugh.gif

I have managed to finished OZ the Great and Wonderful

As prosaic as James Franco was hosting the Academy Awards, he is always quite animated in his movie.

Is he a Great and Powerful OZ??

Not really... and THAT is not a bad thing (watch the movie, and you will know what I mean).

I don't think L. Frank Baum wrote this story.

His works most likely, inspired it.

If you have watched MGM's The Wizard of Oz (1939) and like that.

You will definitely LOVE this.

So much homage and attention to details are paid tribute to that movie... Inspired really.

A true prequel to The Wizard of OZ.

A word of caution. Although this is a prequel, if you have not watched The Wizard of Oz (1939) before, do watch THAT first before you watch this.

I think that would be better sequencing (eg. will not spoil The Wizard of Oz for you)

As AVFAN had stated, a true Family viewing indeed!!

The Heir Apparent: Largo Winch (2008)

Can you say, multiple personality??

This is apparently a very well received comic book in France, which had been adapted to this movie.

Also, not the first attempt, before this movie, a TV series ans TV movie were made.

So... being French, it does not conform to the norm Hollywood formula.

Unfortunate for this movie, THAT is not a good thing...

It tried to hard to be everything to everyone!!?!

Meaning??

It tried to be James Bond for James Bond fans.

It also tries to be Jason Bourne to Jason Bourne fans and etc, etc... You catch my drift...

Tomer Sisley is the lead, cannot say I've seen him in anything before, but then I'm not a big European cinema viewer...

He does, I suppose, have some leading man quality looks and German!!

Lead actress, really not much to say.

Story, I know people who reads my reviews will know that I ALWAYS complain about not having enough story in a movie... I'm gonna do a 180 degrees turn around here and say, this movie has TOO MUCH story!! So much so by the end, all I can say is.... meh...?

The worst thing about this movie is the editing.

The past and present is so badly cut together, you can hardly tell them apart, making following and relating to the characters a chore...

Many a time, I was tempted to just stop viewing this movie...

Filmed in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the landscape is different.

Not much else I can say...

For what's it's worth....

The Guillotines 血滴子 (2012)

Okay, before being tarred and feathered, please let me write the review first!!!

Seriously!! rolleyes.gif

First things first, this is NOT by far a good movie...

Heck! It isn't even a fair movie...

And it is a damn shame.

In the seventies, Shaw Brothers made several well accepted Flying Guillotines movies.

And the main thing people go to watch, is the flying guillotine...

In this movie, they spent too much time making the mechanics of the object too complex (and impossible). The term flying guillotine as people who use the weapon.

They tried to make the movie about the people, and frankly, I thought is was refreshing, but unfortunately, the execution was just a mess...

It was ugly.

The kind of ugly that switching the lights off would not help.... tongue.gif

In short, fair story, HORRIBLE movie

They even tried the Jesus in the Desert scene... I KID you not...

Watchmen (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray Steelbook] (2013)

user posted image

Director's cut for Watchmen really a bit too long, 3 hours 6 mins.  sweat.gif

Anyway, I really help me to understand the story.

Nice super heroes movie (although, in fact, only 1 person have super power, Dr. Manhattan) but not many fight scenes.
*
With the graphic novel with the tagline, "Who watches the Watchmen", what did you expect

The story does want to know American History from the 60s onwards, but apart from that, quite well made.

Believe it or not, Alan Moore the original writer of the graphic novel had gone on the record to say that we would not watch the movie.

He had had some bad experiences with his material being translated to movies...

Although I think Warner was hoping to make more money from the movie (with all the cost and legal battle... *sigh*)

I have to admit that Zack Snyder (Director) did the unthinkable, he translated the Watchmen into a movie (Alan Moore also when on the record to say that this work can never be translated into a movie)!!

Just realised that Mathilda May actually didn't know she need to naked in this film until about to filming.  According to her recent interview with Shout Factory, she did mentioned that at that time she is still too young and barely speak English, if you ask her again now, she will reject to participate this film.  The lady introduced her to this movie never inform her what type of role she actually is.  blush.gif

Battle Los Angeles (4K Remaster) (2011)

QUOTE
The Battle of Los Angeles, also known as The Great Los Angeles Air Raid, is the name given by contemporary sources to the rumored enemy attack and subsequent anti-aircraft artillery barrage which took place from late 24 February to early 25 February 1942 over Los Angeles, California.
(from Wikipedia)

Not a FANTASTIC movie, and have to add, I actually found this enjoyable

I always like the scene where starting at around 26:30 mins, where the team first enter the 'war zone'. Destination: police station. Objective: rescue the civilians. The sense surround sound in this is is UNBELIEVABLE....

Sony is really making a push for the 4K format.

Although there really isn't any native format yet (eg. a disc that can hold more then 50GB. In theory a native 4K program should require up to 200GB worth of storage space. Although Blu-ray Disc Association had not made their minds up about the 4K disc format, I have read somewhere that either Hitachi or Toshiba (or maybe even some other company, old already and cannot find the article again) that they have successfully develop a way to write and read a disc surface 3 Dimensionally (eg every spot on the disc is NOT one surface but six surfaces [imagine the spot being a Rubik's cube]). So a 50GB disc can potentially become 300GB...

Having said that it does not stop Sony from remastering their movies in 4K and then downgrading it to the 1080P Bluray format...

The upside, better detail picture quality for Blurays...?

I have had the chance to see Ghostbusters (1984), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and this in the 4K remastered version.

Ghostbusters is definitely more detailed. Not sure if Battle: Los Angeles is the most obvious choice for this process. Mainly because of the camera work. Most of the scenes where filmed with hand held cameras and because of the subject matter, war you see more or less smoke and dust... The Amazing Spider-man is the best looking movie of the lot!!

With 4K TV being issued, and no native material, I think this remastered in 4K is basically lip service. On the other hand, having more gorgeous looking 1080P disc, is always welcome.

Sorry for ranting.

Warm Bodies (2013)

Zombie Movie + Frankenstein Monster + Romeo & Juliet??? (I kid you NOT)

And you know what, I actually like THIS!!

Okay, okay, it is actually a Rom Com!!

And a very VERY well done Rom Com!!!

It is original and it is very VERY well done?

Nicholas Hoult is really getting around, Jack from Jack the Giant Slayer, Hank/Beast in X-Men: First Class and he is going to be in the reboot of Mad Max!!

As I said, this guys is getting around and no wonder, for a young dude, he acting skills is actually pretty versatile!!

Watch out for Rob Corddry's M, he almost steals the show!! He may just be the next Simon Pegg!!

I think this is great and I should NOT spoil it for you guys.

If you want a feel good movie with a different twist, give this a try, why don't youse. Youse know youse want to...

Transformers (2007)

I was re-watching Transformers last night and you know what, from a story point of view, it is actually pretty TIGHT.

Video transfer was Great, Sound Spectacular....

How do you get from Transformers (2007) to Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)!!!?

The short answer, the script.

Looking at IMDB, both Transformers (2007) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci were/part of the writing team (they also wrote Star Trek and Trek Trek into the Darkness). For some odd reason, they were not involved in the script for Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)... Go figures...

In the first movie, the story was told from the human perspective, which means, we can relate to the movie.

In the third....

I really shudder to think what the 4th installment is going to be like... because Ehren Kruger who wrote the 3rd is back...

shocking.gif

Is it possible that Hollywood never learns...

2014 and 2015 may be transitional years... There are people in the movie industry who are concern that with the advent of personal video cameras and with the younger generation need for instant gratification (Singapore Polytechnic anyone *groan*), big budget movies can become... obsolete...

I still like the first Transformers the best, it has... heart!

Thanks for reading

I am of the same opinion.

Transformers was a good flick. A good storyline, a good introduction to the Autobots and Decepticons. The CGI was not overly done, and the movie flowed well.  And the right amount of robots.

Transformers 2 and 3 had much weaker scripts with more and more robots and was just a CGI fest.

On another note, I watched and thoroughly enjoyed a couple of westerns the last few weeks. True Grit (1969) and Magnificent Seven. Magnificent Seven was great to revisit after a long time and TrueGrit was also a lot of fun.

Need to get my hand on another oldie - Father Goose which has one of my favourite actors Cary Grant.

[Transformers] for a minute, I thought I was the only one.... tongue.gif

I love the The Magnificent Seven (1960, which was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai). I don't think there is another more testosterone filled movie in western cinema (I don't think Fast 6 counts tongue.gif, sorry young'un)

Father Goose I've got and haven't gotten around to, I'm actually looking forward to Charade (1963) probably my favorite Cary Grant movie.

I have watched the remake True Grit (2010) and liked it and for some odd reason, had not watched the original....
