I gt offers from both university now, I'm having a hard time in making decision. NTU offered me environmental engineering while UM offered me civil engineering. Both of them have their own advantage.

The most crucial factor stopping from choosing NTU is the living cost and tuition fee. Can I go there without any financial support from my family. I mean can I provide myself while studying or not? Is money a real problem?

How about UM? is it really that bad? I'm really tired of thinking all the pro and con now. Can anyone give me some advice? My family is not really encouraging me to go singapore btw.

I would encourage you to accept NTU offer if you can afford. If not, you can get tuition loan + tuition grant, which will make it a lot more affordable. The tertiary education exposure you get in Singapore will define you as a person as well as broaden your perspective. I'm sure that you will learn and benefit more from the enriching experience in Singapore.

Hmm.. maybe you should think: where do you want to work at?

In my personal opinion,
i think environmental engineering grads are unlikely to get good jobs in Malaysia. I don't see Malaysia is going to care about the environment anytime soon. (Just see the recent Lynas project at Pahang). Maybe until Malaysia get in the 1st world country which is like about 120 years from now. =P

So, i think if you go to study environmental engineering in NTU, you will most likely end up working in Singapore.

However if you study civil engineering in UM, you can both work at Malaysia/Singapore. Pays could be lower when you're in Malaysia but hey, what do we live for? What can be better than spending more time with family and loved ones right? What's more, UM is known as the top university in Malaysia, not many can get in, especially when you're from STPM or A-level.

So yeah.. my vote goes to Civil Engineering in UM.

Anyway these are all just my personal opinions~ no offence to anyone =)

i think if you want to keep your options as open as possible, the best bet would still be civil in um.........i believe engineering um is still the top rank engineering programme in msia....you will have no problems getting a job in spore after you graduate, if you want......

hmmm , which course u prefer ??

my opinion is NTU if ur family can afford or u are willing to take loans from sg bank ( think carefully since its a very big sum)

in fact the degree doesnt play such a big role in your future career like many think

u still can get a very nice job in sg if u grad from usm , provided u learn well in usm

UM cert is recognizes in singapore if not mistaken. u can join the Sg Board eng. There is no different between both cert since u can work in SG and join SG Board Eng.

The situation is different if get an offer from non recognize uni. U cant join the board, and u need to redo or do Master in SG unis to fulfill the qualification to join the Board.

I got plenty of frens did B.Eng in msia and at the end they did their master in SG because they cannot join Board. Eng.

I will go for NTU. There are so many opportunities you can explore there. Aim to develop your abilities in different areas there. publish and present papers even as an undergraduate. get contacts from visiting professors from world renowed universities. express interests in their post graduate programs. apply for NTU-MIT program or even MIT itself. apply for jobs in US after your 3 year bond etc..

please do not fell restricted by the financial burdens and 3 year bond. these are only little hurdles that stop people from advancing in the race. you have in fact overcome the greatest hurdle, ie getting admission. appreciate the opportunity given to you and begin your journey in NTU this coming August!

u're so brave. I'm just feel that i should be responsible to my family without taking money from my mum. So how's your living cost budget including hostel fee per month? are you going to work while study?

I also picked NTU over USM(Offer me my 1st choice) in this coming August intake and with TFL + NTU Study loan + Kuok Foundation(But not sure yet, results should be out soon) = I supposed my parents do not need to pay a single cents for my study+living, my family can't really support me fully, house sold, now living in a rental small apartment where my brother has to sleep in the living room...but my dad call me go over Singapore and take the risk
