smile.gif I see there's no tread about moon cakes and was wondering about everybody else.

(01) Do you take the festival seriously?
(02) If you do, how many averagely do you buy for presents a year?
(03) What is your favourite brand?

The production on mooncakes is in full swing now and in some cases they are already in promotions in some supermarkets. laugh.gif The hungry ghost festival has not even started and mooncakes is on sale now. Talk about commercialism shocking.gif . It is getting really unrealistic nowadays. Back in those days, they come in roll form. A packet still holds four cakes just like Ghee Hiang 'tambun biscuits' which is sililiarly packed. Nowadays there is a packaging war amongts the producers and this has made mooncakes really really expensive. I think the most innovative packaging has to be Baker's Cottage.

The main players are Kum Lun Tai (an olde brand), Foh San, Yoke Woo Hin, Overseas Restaurant, Baker's Cottage and a few more I can't recall and even Amway has it. Not only packaging are important, the range is even more challenging, even for buyers. No more the usual, without yolk, with double yolk, sweet bean, 'lin yung' etc. Now there are chocolate flavour, durian flavour, dragon fruit flavour etc.etc. In my opinion we are actually lining the producers pocket with this over hyped event.

Gone are the days when we will buy lanterns and also make 'match guns' to shoot at the lanterns laugh.gif I think younger generations never even seen a 'match gun' before not have they seen self made lantern with Milo tins or the spinning condensed milk tin on a spool powered by rolling the spool on the ground. laugh.gif Great inventions from bored and poor kids like us who don't have the privilege of buying a lantern. Or our lantern got burned and those days, one festival one lantern, no more. Burnt! that's your problem. laugh.gif

I don't really care about the festival nowadays but my MIL will buy a few boxes and called it ours and send to other relatives and relatives will in return get other moon cakes to present and then those she received goes back out into circulation. Doesn't really make sense to me actually. So, what your opinion? icon_rolleyes.gif

Your 2nd last paragraph make you sound damn old lol. I'm already in my 30's and even I don't know what on earth a match gun is ...

Anyway to me ... moon cake festival is to eat! My favorite are two yolk lotus paste ones ... 1 yolk too sweet (too much lotus), 4 yolk too much yolk tongue.gif

Super duper expensive nowadays...Gone were the days when Mooncake selling at RM3 for double egg yolk during the late eighties.

I was shocked this year another increase...Almost RM15 for 1 pc of dopuble egg yolk. Stop buying Moon cakes for years now..All rely on free hampers from suppliers haha..we shared among the staff

Have to point out it is expensive thou as compare to last time.

Nonetheless as a sign of respect for our seniors giving boxes of mooncakes to our relatives is unavoidable and is our Chinese heritage and culture of sharing. We should prolong the values in it which what makes the festival meaningful and valuable.

My best choice of mooncake is still Haagen Dazz for parents and Tai Thong for relatives as their packing is really nice for many years.

If I know how to make it at home, i will make myself and give it out which is more meaningful...

Any recommendations for mooncakes?
I've tried Casahana, Tai Tong and and Kum Lun Tai. No big differences among the three. Perhaps KLT is less sweet. Dare I say KLT this year seems a bit smaller than the average mooncake? Double egg yolks lotus are now around RM16!

Tested the best seller 2010 mooncake by bakers cottage.
Chocolate flavour but to my dismay, it tasted more like eating chocolate cake instead. doh.gif

Price at RM15.90 and I wander why they claim it's last year best seller.
I rather go buy a chocolate cake and eat instead. mad.gif

Anyone knows where to buy those jelly ones with fruit slices in it? Only came up in recent years. Looking high and low.

Sadly to say, the tradition is dying. Everything is way too commercialised these days. Expensive mooncakes cos of the packaging they come in. Less families gathering to play lantern. Kids would rather play with their iphone/ipad/HTC than to get their hands burnt by candlewax outside.

I take it as a time to eat. I know the stories about the 2 lovers and also the one about the passing messages in war (was that Moon Cake Festival?) But yeah, this is mostly for me to eat.

(02) If you do, how many averagely do you buy for presents a year?
I don't buy. My relatives and my family will exchange and I will eat.

(03) What is your favourite brand?
I like all. My fave flavour is red bean. smile.gif

I have never fancied mooncake. I find it very sweet and I don't like the taste. Normally just eat one small slice to be polite.

Best part of mooncake festival is having a party. Lol.

Crispy corn tortilla skin, truffle fois-gras caviar filling and marzipan moon ball....... it's a Rm100 mooncake? Yuxxxxx !

Miss the original mooncakes, with thick finely ground very black bean paste that is made with real pork lard, no sunflower seeds, double yolk optional. No good if the bean filling is powdery, coarse, too sugary, not just charcoal without burnt sugar taste. Cheaper would be good too!

Materials cost of a mooncake is similar to Chinese 'Wedding biscuit' about RM1.50/pc. Mooncake producers are making HUGE profit citing once a year opportunity.

Pork lard is substituted first by peanut oil than palm oil for additional profit. Filling is loaded with sugar to prevent spoilage. Preservative is almost certain added to the skin else will go off in 2 weeks.

Emm... usually I take 1 whole moon cake at a time to feel the satisfaction. I buy less while the price goes up, and female family memebers scared of getting fat, refuse to take...
I used to buy the "yok wu hin" till one time the moon cake skin peel off from the filling...
Last year tried the casahana, feel so-so only, KLT better. This year I'll try the baker's cottage.

Thanks! I finally bought the 1 at Corus hotel KL which had great reviews on their durian mooncakes.. No idea about the double yolk n sesame so I bought 2 boxes from there.
2 durian mooncake
2 musang king moon cake
2 sesame moon cake
2 double yolk moon cake

Will review it when I have tried it!

Thanks!

Anyways I was asking around for mooncakes and some said that the best time is around 2 weeks before mooncake festival because .. those mooncakes that were sold 2 months before the festival are mooncakes from the previous year.. A client of mine had an experience with moldy fungus in her moon cake which was really disgusting when i heard about it!

Still have lots of mooncake wandering around my house..

Just started eating Dragon-I (HK white lotus paste with single yolk & Dragon-I Signature)

Both not bad, not too sweet..

The hello kitty pandan was not that nice maybe 1st yr started selling..

Nowadays I seldom see mooncake counters set up at shopping malls. Is the trend now towards purchasing online and collecting from store? Noticed quite a number of promotions at 11street when I was browsing that site. Loved baker's cottage mooncakes but since I dont see it around anymore probably gonna try Komugi ones this year.
