Hi all...

As the topic title, i'm suffered from BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) since year ago. The symptoms is dizzyness, headache, loss of balance and slight anxiety due to random spinning/loss of balance sensation. I'm on medicine right now, but i hope i can add some light workout/exercise (beside the Epley's maneuver) because some article and doctor point that exercise can help treat the illness and keep my mind positive. I can jog and do some light exercise but due to the loss of balance sensation, i'm kinda not enjoyed it much. Plus can't walk or travel too far like going to the gym or nearby park make me frustrated, so i thought why not have one exercise machine at home?

My goal is not for having perfect body, muscle, abs or something like that, but i hope it can reduce my symptoms because my life has changed in this 1 year time. I'm looking at every possible option to cure my illness since i'm still young i can't imagine myself being like this until i become an old man.
Right now, i'm looking at AB-DOER TWIST. Honestly i saw that machine from TV advertisement, and i think it suit person with illness like me, since i can't stand for too long (my head will get dizzy and the loss of balance sensation will feel greater) and the machine can be used in sit position. And also it can be folded make it a plus point since my house isn't big. From Amazon user reviews, it get 4 out of 5 stars. Though i don't know whether it was honest or sock account review.

My questions is any of you guys have experience with this kind of machine? It is good? Because i don't really believe this kind of advertisement shown in TV. Is the price, $200 listed at Amazon is normal for exercise machine? Or do you have any other better suggestion like exercise regime, exercise machine, accessories for me?

Thank You.

Wouldn't using the AB-DOER TWIST make your problem worst?

I think if I use it also I will disoriented or get headache.

Perhaps some weights and a bench will be better for you.

On second thought i think this machine will make my head dizzy because lots of upper body and head movement but i think it is not too bad because i'm already live with the dizziness and headache, it is just a case whether it will feel worse or not. But if i have choice, i will choose the less dizzy and safer option. Still i heard heavy workout can make your head dizzy because not enough oxygen? Because 3 years ago when i'm still a heavy smoker, i feel very dizzy after an hour of futsal session. But today i'm free from tobacco and cigarette.
However, i think i'm gonna take ccslink advice first.

Equilibrium training.

Basically you force yourself to a movement that make you dizzy, and then perform a workout. You train yourself to recover from dizziness to normal faster.

Example: "spin in circles for a specific amount of time and then immediately stop and take a shot" -taken from "Blunt force trauma: High impact strength & conditioning for combat athelete".

1) ET into sprawls
2) ET into pull-ups
3) ET into med ball shot puts
4) ET into 30 sec live wrestling
5) ET into shadow boxing
6) ET into heavy bag kicks

Well, you get the idea!

where to find more info about Equilibrium training? Google 1st and 2nd page show unrelated things like movie with the same name, company name and some UFC videos.
About the bolded part; is that the way how professional boxer trained? To make them recover from dizziness caused by punch?

I suppose so. It is only logical you exercise as what these fighters do to recover back from state of dizziness.

You can download the book straight away from dieselcrew.com website as below. Information you'll be seeking will be at pg. 102~103. Nothing much discussed really.

http://www.dieselcrew.com/articles-pdf/bft-final.pdf

I think the more important thing you should know by now is that you can select any exercise you prefer to do... and do it ET style. Try also to focus your research on what fighter do to remain conscious, it should help a lot. Let me know (by pm) if over time, this kind of training improve your adaptation to your condition. Good luck~

There is a doctor suggested me taking a therapy or ENT specialist. He said the therapy it is similar to person who undergo pilot-training or sort. He can't explained much since he is not expertise in this area. I need to research more, but surely this kind of exercise take time. Btw, that pdf is really good and have lots of information too about body and mental which i'm sure will come in handy especially about keeping mental in positive state.

Not really familiar with your syndrome but I would said that when it come to fitness, workout and exercise, there are always several boundaries.

Those that have asthma, obesity, knee or ligaments injuries, back problem, even migraine etc could lead them not to working out.

In fact, sometimes our body condition is not that one limitting us, but our mind and fear are the one limitting us.So control your mind and mental are more important. Saying "NO!" or "I'll faint if I do this and that" are like setting your mind to decline anything that may help you.

Just like when kids don't want to go school, they start thinking school is bad, they are having stomach-ache and the friends will be laughing then they really start having stomach-ache.

Never underestimate your mind. Try to give yourself some confident. If you feel dizzy for running and so on, take a break. Change it to something more static, pushups, situps, lunges, squatting without weights. When you are ready, then try to move on next level. You can start with doing 10 each a day. To maybe 15 a day,30,45. When you feel bored, then change or upgrade.Even pushups and lunges have variants.

Beside that, I would really recommend you doing yoga or just stretching. Yoga, itself can be classified into categories. Of course, i'm not asking you to try Power Yoga. Try some basic movements like Warrior 1,Warrior 2, Child's Post,Chair's Post etc. That work your muscles as well as coordination and of course balance.

If you really want machine, I would suggest you taking up something like gymstation that allow you to do weights, of course you spend much more for it.

Still in case, you feel boring and then wasted money, doing simple movements at home could be the best you can do.

MIND controls everything.

You're right too. I feel my mind has become slight negative since i have this illness. I always be caution and try to avoid any situation that make the dizziness and loss of balance feel greater, like avoid taking crowded train, avoid noisy and crowded place, overdo some workouts and didn't participate any sporting event. I guess it have something to do with anxiety, but after did some research this illness is synonym with anxiety especially for new patient. So what i did to counter this is take a deep breath (there are various method) and talk to somebody (even on the phone) because when i talk to somebody i kinda forgot the dizziness and loss of balance sensation. Happen so many time, but when i'm start to think about the illness, the sensation and symptom start to coming back. I guess, our mind can be powerful at time. That explain why world class athlete can maintain their focus even in 24 hours event.
