Hi guys, i suck at art. Dn believe me? I dapat F in Seni. Bt i happen to enjoy sketching and very intrested in manga. Do i need to be uber talented to draw manga? And if not, can someone recomend me tutorials? And i have trouble drawing mirror drawings, eg eyes. Eyes that i draw are different. Any assistance much appreciated.

manga = heavy stylization of the actual human anatomy. you must first learn proper anatomy , proportions etc before you go ahead and stylize them to your liking.

or just go ahead and get 'How to draw manga : ' books if you'd rather be a one trick pony.

basic means enough to differentiate what are you drawing + your drawing don't suck until people tend to avoid your drawings.

Those guys above are totally right, and about your topic title, drawing doesn't require talent, just plain old passion for art

You don't need to be a talented artist tocreate a manga. But you do need to know the steps it takes to attract readers. Case example: One piece and Shin Chan. One piece art is not in anyway superb or anything and their whacky anatomy is completely....well.... whack. But they offer solid and interesting storyline and lots of climaxs to keep reader entertain and continue reading. Shin Chan is definitely not artistically drawn. But its humour is very good.

A good art is a plus. But it is the content that matter. Perhaps you could try looking at an anime/manga series called "Bakuman" to understand few ideas about how to be mangaka.

Erm ps, maybe i din clarify. Real life sketches of people done by me results in the myth of aliens come true. I determine proportions by drawing them circles. I enjoy art, especially manga but I cannot draw normal human parts, eg eye. Manga styled eyes are simpler and out of the 100 that i drew, i had a decent one. So i thought of going the opposite way, drawing manga and futher changing it to become normal drawings. Please advise

so you want to look for an easier way out?
there's no way
to begin with anything you need good basic
and form there you can only develope your own style
or else,go on and struggle like how i see from our local artist
some couldnt even create decent art
they got no basic at all

successful manga needs more brain than art skill.

then you'll just stuck at a level and wont further more without good sets of art skills

i think u just need practice... just keep drawing u will stop sucking soon

i think what attracts a lot of people in manga is how unique your drawing is compared to a lot of other mangas out there.

Also the story and stuff. Dik Cerdas drawings are pretty simple but it's famous worldwide. Chibimaruko Chan too!

But skills are needed if you want to deliver what is on your mind to the readers.

You dont need to have great talent to draw.
It requires great deal of patience and compassion.
Drawing is just a technical skill, which can be improved over time just by hardcore practicing.
Like previous poster said, study the human anatomy first if you wanna draw manga. That is the very basic. Dont just draw pretty eye, faces and stop right there. You can also draw your own finger, hand just by observing. Slowly develop the sense of human anatomy. See the muscle etc etc. This is very important. You can started off by drawing random figures from magazine, and also manga but i dont recommend it. Manga is just a stylized figure and should not be a reference. However, the angle of projection, styles can be reference from manga.
Once you got the basic right, you can proceed to create your own style of manga. And there is where TALENTS comes from. CREATIVITY.

manga is more story than just drawing.

it's emotion and not just graphic.

Just Try Copy From Other Manga..Just For Increase Ur Art Skill

For me, i believe in practice make perfect...i'm interested on manga style drawing..and i draw it often(in lecture hall or free time)...so far from wat i know it requires much practice...talent is one thing but more important one will be hard work..give urself a target, keep record of ur drawing and u'll see much improvement..

when you're ready= try creating your own stroke or style

most important =YOUR INTEREST /MINAT

Actually, doing comics needs alot more than just talent, mate. Especially if you're writing your own. Yes, passion drives you further, but i think knowledge puts you ahead of everyone.

For instance, you need graphic design, a good vocabulary(and writing skill), drawing skill, cinematography and damn good attitude.

Graphic Design will dictate much on panelling, page flow, ballon placements and so forth. Writing is for...scripts and dialogs. This cannot be overlooked since lacking this will put a considerable dent on your work. Cinematography will help you alot on shots and placements of the characters in the panels. Just bear in mind that i did not mention about prop, vehicle, environment, character design. Those will break your brains.

Lets go back to the initial request by TS. Keep an open mind and learn from both sides. US comics, Manga, Manhwa, Korean, even some of our legends like Ujang, Zainal Buang Hussein and Jaafar Taib. They're good at what they do. Aside from that, lurk alot in Art community like conceptart.org or cgtalk. You dont have to post, but look, learn and apply their techniques and methods.

Another thing: Dont worry about style. Its just a combination of the author/Artist's preferences. It does not matter if they like manga or whatever, give them couple of years and they'll change.

Hey, you know you could actually learn manga drawing from youtube...
It teaches you from the basic and it really helps -at least it did 4 me..

IMHO, if you want to make it as a manga artist, there are certain level of skill sets you have to attain, before you even attempting to sell your work to publishers.

If you have the skill level of the following art works (random picks from google image search), then you got what it takes to be a manga artist.

Many experience professional artists should know that there are a plethora of aspects involved in creating just a single comic. That includes perspective, shading & lighting, staging, setting, basic geometry knowledge, etc.

I'm not a professional myself, in fact MILES away from there, but I'm still learning to get a grip in various art techniques as I'm eager to. Creating a manga doesn't involve simply just being able to draw humans, but several form of art techniques are combined and interconnected in order to create a aesthetic and realistic story. Do practice in a proper way and try putting yourself into several art medium, you'll never know what you'll get from there.

Be more open; get out and connect with fellow artist, whether in the real world or online. It gets you to build your vast pool of knowledge and thinking abilities in the art field. Being an artist isn't so easy anymore, its all about having diverse general skill sets and being able to tackle unexpected dilemma that you'd face everyday.

i think drawing manga you can do it for fun during free time rather than do it seriously. it is to avoid painful stress

Manga is a type of comic. Its not an artstyle. Asking whether or not drawing it is hard is like asking whether or not its difficult to draw one of those disney characters form their movies. In other words, if your art lacks balance the rest of the 12 foundations, no matter what style you draw, it will always suck.

drawing and arts need passion. If no passion, may it be manga or other artistic stuff, you won't improve. The talent thing is a plus, if you got talent its something like a bonus to you.

You don't need to be talented, if you are good at sketching comic creators require alot of manpower to do sketching on his sketches, all you do is follow the lines and touch up. You don't really need to know how to draw but need to be skillful. Of course if you talk about creating manga on your own that requires alot of talent, as even famous creators even if they are good at drawing they still need a good script writer to create interesting & beautiful works, unless you are like Akira Toriyama & few others that draw & write their own scripts. Even the original Gundam have different personnel doing the mech design, character design, drawing, sketching, screen writing, painting etc. Doing comic instead of cartoon or 3D games doesn't mean it's cake walk 1 person can handle. It usually takes a year or more for a one man team to come up with 1 volume while 3-4 months of a full team.
