Nope, solid surfaces can't handle the heat, and scratch easy. When i was in US, some of the hotel i go use only concrete for the toilet sink. Is dam nice.
I want to do this on the kitchen, can't even find a cement dye to make it Black / White. |

QUOTE(praetorion @ Nov 23 2013, 01:01 AM) I use this http://www.pyeproducts.com/prodetails.php?...de=RESL&lang=en Acrylic sealer not very friendly with rubber, when you have rubber stand on the top for long maybe few days, it tend to stick on it making it got marking. |

Thanks for the info. I am still looking for water based sealer. This PYE will react to silicone caulk as well?
You might need to apply a layer of beeswax to cover the sealer. This way you wont run into sticky situation. Problem is wax need to reapply every 3 months or so. |

QUOTE(cyberp @ Sep 13 2011, 02:06 PM) http://designerfinish.com.my/polishedconcrete This company did a sample presentation at my company and yes it is nice but the price comes with the expertise they have. They have several design and concrete colours. If I'm not mistaken its about rm 22-24 persqft but u guys have to do the smooth rendering first just like when you wanted to lay parquet or laminated flooring. If small amount they charge you lum sum.tis company does polished concrete countertops... must not be cheap though Cheers mate, Izwan Www.klarchid.blogspot.com Www.facebook.com/klarchid |

Just make sure you don't use Granite counter top especially those from China. Bet many people don't know hey emit radiation, me included. I only knew this is a problem when I was checking out the many outlandish claims by Pakatan against Lynas and found a lot of what they said are utter rubbish said to scare people to vote for them.

Good thread. I've been reading alot about concrete counter top on the internet alot in recent weeks. Trying to learn and understand and maybe can DIY since alot of the howto videos and net guides are DIYers.
But the main problem is all the website are from US or UK and for them, any materials is readily available from either their local hardware store or online stores..even ready-mix concrete which is not possible to ship to Malaysia The cement & aggregates are easy, can get anywhere, its those additives, plasticizers, admixtures, pigment dyes, sealers etc etc..i've tried searching hard on local website but it seems nothing.. I checked out Acehardware, they do carry a PU sealer brand is Minwax but i'm unsure if its for concrete use..reading from net, epoxy based sealers not best choice, especially if used in Kitchen.. If browse through pye products website, there do seem to have water based PU sealers for concrete but again, info is very limited, might have to go directly to pye's office/warehouse to buy directly There's an online seller in lowyat, selling invisible based water proofing thingy, if u checked out his website, they have a product for cement admixtures. Based on description, i think its a very good solution to add into the concrete mixtures to make it strong, unlike just using cement, aggregates, lime & water. If u guys do more searching online, one can actually make the concrete top as smooth, silky & good looking as solid surface, with better strength properties, durability at maybe 5% the cost of solid surface (mind you a cement bag is like only RM18 which can cast you a 10ft table) With pigment dyes, you can make it any color you wish, and i'm particularly interested in making it super white like solid surface, but then again, cant find any pigment dyes for concrete in Malaysia.. maybe like TS, need to order from net, shipped from US or something appreciate if TS can post some photos of final products and get everyone interested in concrete products |

white pigment dye is actually white cement which is available from PYE but i havent tried that yet.
PYE do have premix cement with sand and you can get them from hardware shop too. Tell them you want 916 premix. They comes with 1kg and 18kg if i am not mistaken. |

QUOTE(praetorion @ Apr 26 2014, 10:00 AM) white pigment dye is actually white cement which is available from PYE but i havent tried that yet. Its actually more than using just white cement..check out this projectPYE do have premix cement with sand and you can get them from hardware shop too. Tell them you want 916 premix. They comes with 1kg and 18kg if i am not mistaken. http://m.concretenetwork.com/concrete/coun...countertop.html In addition of using white cement, they added a pigment from blueconcrete called Titanium White integral pigment to make it super white http://www.blueconcrete.com/white/ Then they also use white silica sand & white coarse aggregates I dont know about the pye 916 premix, but is it specifically meant for concrete countertop or for general purposes? What i was referring to was actually premix products like from chengconcrete, quikcrete, buddyrhodes etc, in which they sell premix bags of cements specially designed for concrete countertops..its added with required admixtures etc chengconcrete for example have an extensive product range for alot of concrete projects..i really wish they'd appoint a distributor here for their products |

Believe me if I tell you I understood all the requirements you mentioned coz I did follow closely the development of concrete table top. These are merely their own mixture which is available here, but not in ready mix form. Quikrete is close to PYE here but what we cant get here is hardener compound which is safe for home use.
You can be creative when it comes to aggregates, it can be crystal, glass or any natural stone. At the end of the day it's the surface finishing that is the most important and safe for food handling if you use it in kitchen. |
