Noob here.

GA-M55S-S3, AMD 64 X2 4200+, Kingston DDR2 2G.

There plenty of advice on what to do with multipliers and dividers on CPU, HT etc, but on my mobo, there's only the "CPU clock ratio" (x11) - and no other options.

All the other adjustable BIOS options are to do with voltages, ranging from +0.025V to +0.37V.

I've increased the "CPU frequency" to 218Mhz, but any higher it will not post.

What can I look at next?

lower your memory and lower the hypertransport as well... search google read more oc guide

There are no options to lower the memory multiplier or ratio.

So what exactly do you mean by "lower your memory". As I said, there are no other multipliers to change on this mobo BIOS.

These are all the options I have:

cpu frequency mhz: 200 - 500
pcie clock mhz: 100 - 200
cpu clock ratio: 5 - 11
ddr2 voltage control: +0.025V - +0.275 white +0.300V - +0.475V red
chipset/pcie voltage: +0.025V - +0.375V
ht link voltage: +0.025V - +0.375V
cpu ht-link voltage: +0.025V - +0.375V
cpu voltage control: 1.5500V - 0.8000V

No options means your board doesn't support overclocking.....
*

That's not true.

I have increased the frequency. I also have options related to voltage increases, but you don't know what those things mean.

Caution, I know smile.gif

I prefer answers like these rather than useless replies like "your board doesn't support overclocking".

If I don't have much choice in overclocking, I will look at upgrading just the CPU to Phenom II x2. I don't need multiple cores, but I want the single-threaded application I'm running to have the highest speed possible.

The next step is upgrading the board, but let's see what I can do for now.

woohooo! Now I get a few more options...

Let me have a look first - what am I looking at?

no, change the memory clock should have options like 667, 400 etc
*

I managed to increase core speed to 226Mhz, with the following:

- 533, it failed on post
- 400, posted but Windows7 blue-screened
- 400, increased core voltage to 1.4, booted fine, but benchmarked on SuperPI slower.

Thanks for your help, any other ideas you have just let me now. thumbup.gif

lower this > Memory Clock - DDR 667

have a look here so u'll have some idea bout how cpu multipliers can affect ddr2 frequencies on am2.

*

Before dafreak told me about the ctrl-f1, I can't even see the Memory Clock option.

Now that I can see it and lower it and at the same time managed to increase the base frequencywith CPU-Z and Easytune5 showing the increases, Unfortunately my benchmarks are running slower. This includes Super-PI, and the software that I'm running which is really the reason for this exercise.

I'll keep experimenting and see what I can find, now that I have a few more options to play with smile.gif

Latest update:

Core speed - 230MHz (x11)
DDR2 - fixed at 667 (anything lower will produce worse benchmark results or same as no OC)
Voltage - 1.425V
PCI - Fixed at 100 (if I left it AUTO it will not post unless I reduce DDR speed - with this I can leave DDR speed unchanged)

With this, Super-PI shows further improvements.

Am I near the limit, or can I push further?

push htt bit by bit, increase vcore and/or vdimm should system goes unstable. iirc ddr2 can take up to 2.x (below 2.2v for 24/7), vcore wise am fine with 1.45v & below.  smile.gif

Can you clarify what you mean by HTT? Same as Bus Speed on CPU-Z? (sorry I kept mis- calling it core speed smile.gif )

For DDR2, I can only see:

ddr2 voltage control: +0.025V to +0.375V

What would the default value be, before any increase? I've changed it to +0.075

try ddr 533 and ht link x8.
see you can go further or not. unsure.gif

I did try ddr 533. With lower ddr, I can increase bus speed --but-- my benchmarks ran slower!
I don't have any other multipliers - just got two:

- cpu clock ratio 5 - 11x
- K8<->SB HT Speed 1 - 5x

have not played with the second yet - is it the same thing you are talking about?

According to the Gigabyte website, my board GA-M55S-S3 (AM2) can support AM3 chips.

So I can take out my Athlon 64 x2, and drop in a, say Phenom II x2?

I looking at something with the fast per-core speed, rather than multiple cores. Like Phenom II x2 555 BE?

check the cpu support list.
choose the correct rev. of the mainboard before check. biggrin.gif
*

All the rev 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 show the CPU i'm interested in is supported. That's good because I don't know what rev my board is. CPU-Z shows x.x only for some reason.

Your note is slightly different - you have extra word in bold:

QUOTE
(Note) If you install an AMD AM3/AM2+ CPU on AM2 motherboard, the system bus speed will downgrade from HT3.0(5200 MT/s) to HT1.0 (2000 MT/s); however, the frequency of AM2+ CPU will not be impacted.
Are we looking at the same website? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2316#

oh, ok. That's a better wording than the one I'm looking because without the AM3, it has a different meaning. thanks rclxms.gif

What do u mean only one? Asus M5A97, M5A97 Evo, M5A99X, 990FX Sabertooth & Crosshair 5 Formula all uses UEFI yoo.. sweat.gif

Oh, ok, thanks smile.gif

I did a search http://www.asus.com/Search/?SearchKey=uefi and only one I recognized was M5A97 in the list.

I thought it might be more useful than just nice. If it doesn't add much value, I think M5A88-V EVO would be quite adequate for a basic OC'er like me... smile.gif Any comments on the M5A88-V EVO?
