which rom are you on now?
if froyo go into recovery wipe data ,format /system, /data,/datadata,/cache. then flash MIUI.
if gingerbread flash to EZbase 2.0 (if you dont know what is it check first page) ,format /system, /data,/datadata,/cache, then flash MIUI.

no need. MIUI is base on cm7. just go into recovery, wipe data, mount storage > format /system, /data,/datadata,/ cache, then flash MIUI and done.

all roms will not wipe your data in sdcard they will only wipe internal memory. search some apps to backup your sms. or use go sms

photos are untouched as internal sdcard are not formatted. for sms, can be backed up using TB, sms backup apps, or GO sms pro in-built feature. see first page.
