It's quite a sad thing to know that when an iPhone4 user tries to "How Lian" the stuff against a Galaxy S.
First of all, one needs to understand that the Galaxy S (not even S2 - which is so much more powerful) in terms of hardware, is superior than the iPhone4.
Galaxy S, running on an ARM A8-Cortex 1Ghz CPU and a PowerVR SGX540 GPU [bundled as the Hummingbird SoC] vs. the iPhone4, which has the same CPU but an older GPU (PowerVR SGX535 - used in the 3GS) [bundled as the Apple A4 SoC].

Secondly, you gotta understand Samsung manufactured these chipsets, so their not gonna be fools to release an inferior model for their own products.
Retina display is fancy - In Plane Switching display with a high resolution display over a 3.5" screen that eventually ends up being more of a white elephant as higher res applications end up consuming more memory and processing; is it necessary for a device of this class?)
In terms of application dev and support - iOS has a bigger base and comes out with their apps ahead of their Android counterparts. This is caused by the open source of Android development ~ allowing other devs to come out with "similar" games with a slight twist in naming. Due to this, development is primarily focused over iOS than Android, since revenue security is assured.
Nevertheless, Android is catching up on this as most popular apps have been ported within a few months of release.
Personally, I would opt for Android since is a fast-maturing OS that offers flexibility; unlike iOS which is a GtG, out-of-the-box solution, which doesn't promise any big improvements in smart phone advancements as it has likely reached it's peak of development.
PS:- Many wonder why iPhone is more "smoother" than Android. Some may have realized the "Illusions" put up from Transition Effects (thus masking load and response times). No one really knows that, the actual load time taken may, infact, be longer than Galaxy S or similar phones.
SGS II or IPHONE 4?!, maybe its not appropriate to ask, but...
