I feel like dumping my N8 for N9 but then Meego's future is uncertain? Wth is Elop playing at here. Some more he said nothing will change his mind on Meego even if N9 proved to be a success. I just don't get it. Maybe Meego is actually really really bad but Nokia managed to hide that fact so far in their N9 promo. That's the only logical reason I can think of. It's either that or Elop is truly a trojan. Which one is more likely?

QUOTE(hengguowei @ Jul 4 2011, 06:19 PM) And may I ask what's the future Elop promised for Symbian? He has prepared a grave for Symbian. Grave? More like dumping lifeless symbian in the desert for the vultures to feast on. QUOTE(super_evil_alien @ Jul 4 2011, 07:49 PM) Killing Symbian is right move IMO.But Elop should have kill it silently. If I'm Elop this is my plan for Symbian: 1st of all I won't announce anything about selling/stop supporting Symbian. In next 12 months release 10 Symbian phones. The following 12 months reduce to 5 Symbian phone. The following 12 months reduce to 3 Symbian phone. After the end of 12 months only then I'll announce that there won't be any Symbian device but say Nokia will continue provide updates for Symbian devices. After 12 months of that announcement announce the very last of the Symbian update & then make all Symbian OS component open source so current users can continue updating the OS with other enthusiast. +1

QUOTE(Andy214 @ Jul 5 2011, 12:54 PM) Basically, those that were not past users of Nokia Maemo devices (N900, N810, N800, N770) might not know about the strong community of Maemo developers. Maemo have a lot of FREE apps (and very useful and powerful apps and also widgets), ported apps from Desktop version (e.g. Chrome Browser, aMSN, MyPaint, so much more), there is also WarCraftII and StarCraftII run with stratagus engine, and so much more; Something you don't find in your common smartphones; And don't need to be surprise if you do, because all these were very old news since N900 or even before N900. The community/developers which support the Maemo OS is amazing, more so being that the OS has no support from Nokia, unfinished, unstable, buggy OS, many features still not yet implemented, etc. Imagine how hard these developers work, and they don't get $$$. QUOTE(super_evil_alien @ Jul 5 2011, 01:09 PM) If any non-Maemo users want to see how much the community has contributed to Maemo OS I suggest you guys to take 1 fresh PR1.2 based N900 & compare it to the heavily modified N900 with CSSU + kernel-power. You'll see huge difference. Regarding the apps, there's not much paid apps available in Maemo/MeeGo probably because current users prefers to use free version of application from the repository. That's a good thing to know. Thanks for the info.

It's all about options to have apps, it's important. Doesn't matter if we use them or not, the option to have them is what people want. My biggest concern is about the apps update. Let say whatsapp, right now for symbian we don't have smiley support and cannot send contact info through it. We can hope for the future updates to include these features but since symbian is dead (allegedly ), would whatsapp ppl waste their time working on that? It's the small small things like those that will keep ppl happy. Now that's for symbian, what about meego? I don't think whatsapp would want to waste their resources working on it. It's good la that community support for Meemo/Meego/Qt is very strong but like hengguowei said, no support from mainstream/proper software dev is a big turnoff. But still, Im very very interested to get N9 Budget permitted of course

QUOTE(hengguowei @ Jul 6 2011, 03:32 PM) lol, it's so no k cause SGS II with good hardware is only 2099. Look at X7, everyone expected to be more expensive than probably even E7 but turns out Nokia Malaysia stated the RRP is only 1399. Hope the same happens to N9. yup i'm hoping for that as well. I guess it depends on how they want to market it. Like HTC sensation retail is 2299 when actually specs wise sgs2 is better. It's just that HTC is selling their Sense UI.

Guys I read somewhere that Meego Harmattan is not the 'real Meego' and we will never see the real Meego. Is that true?

QUOTE(super_evil_alien @ Aug 4 2011, 11:23 AM) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Simple answer : Yes. Complex answer : No There are are some basic differences in MeeGo & MeeGo Harmattan For example MeeGo is using RPM package & Harmattan is using DEB package.Harmattan's API is slightly different from MeeGo because Nokia has added few API's (probably due to swipe gesture) Google for MeeGo & MeeGo Harmattan differences.Previously I already wrote the basic differences between these 2. Although there are differences between these two stuff like programs are compatible with both the OS because Harmattan API do support MeeGo API.Plus both the OS are QT based so porting apps is relatively easy.Developers can use Community OBS to drop the codes & produce RPM & DEB packages. There are methods to bridge other differences between these OS. There are also a team trying to port complete MeeGo 1.2 to N9.Let's see where that goes IMHO if Nokia decides to continue using MeeGo for other handsets (chances are 0.000000001%) I believe the handset still can be success.Because MeeGo still have part of Maemo/Harmattan "power" & widely accepted Nokia's proprietary swipe UI. But we all know Nokia went with WP7.Good luck with that... There are some manufacturer like LG & ZTE expressing their interest to develop MeeGo based handset but I don't know whether it will materialize or not.If they do intent to manufacturer MeeGo device I think they need to somehow acquire the swipe UI from Nokia. Seems like MeeGo is synonym with swipe gesture nowdays. Thanks for your answer. If N9 proves to be a success, it make no sense for Nokia not to continue with the OS, real MeeGo or not.

QUOTE(arsaa @ Sep 22 2011, 10:43 AM) I think maemo/meego developer sure have some way to have whatsapp lookalike app one day.... Don't see the point in that unless they could develop an app that could connect to whatsapp. I mean what makes whatsapp important to some people (including me) is that our circle of friends is using it already and in my case I have totally replaced sms with whatsapp to communicate with them.
