Huh......guess that sudden public announcement gamble by MYTV to force TM and MCMC hands seem to work........
Sometimes I really don't understand.
Who is the actual DTV infrastructure provider? TM or MYTV?  whistling.gif

MYTV doesn't have own DTV transmitter, tower, fiber or satellite uplink......all these are provided by TM.
MYTV doesn't exactly procure or make its own dvb-t2 decoder either........GP and one random China provider.

What exactly does MYTV do? Songlap?
To begin with, the DTV infrastructure tender was quite.....questionable..... innocent.gif
*
MYTV was supposed to fund network as a concession. Revenue only starts when national network up and analog can be turned off. Revenue from RTM and MediaPrima.
MYTV was supposed to provide transmitter and sometimes the tower.
TM own most of the useful sites and sometimes provide tower, charge MYTV rental. TM always provide backbone transmission.
MCMC did not want TM to get the MYTV tender as the GLC would then own all the debt.
The tender demanded two multiplexes with option of a third.

Filling the second multiplex and the optional third one would have been by pay tv channels.
I though MYTV only using on multiplex?

They were supposed to survive by charging RTM and Media Prima to carry the channels, like TM charge them right now for the analog TV.
HD versions of existing channels were all supposed to be free to the us

The MCMC can take over the MYTV transmitters if they go under - should be in the contract. TM can then be appointed to operate them with the capital cost dumped on MYTV shareholders and the banks.

The DTTV contract was a gamble, put your money up first to build the network and then collect revenue and later profit from the television channels. MYTV messed up by taking way to long to roll out the network. It is a difficult project building new transmitters on mountain tops, but they knew that before bidding. I have not heard anything on why they are so delayed.

I guess that the various content providers are waiting for the analog switch off. Most Malaysians will carry on watching analog until forced to flip.

This depends on your building's antenna

For me, I just use my building's centralized antenna and I am getting very good digital reception, but some of the other forummers here have reported this did not work for them and they had to buy external antennas.

Just test the centralized building one first, since that is the cheapest method cos you would only need an RF cable to connect to the wall. I only spent RM6 for one in Ace Hardware.

Many building central antennas are VHF only. MYTV is UHF

Some of the analog VHF transmitters are using low bitrate digital backhaul to their KL studios. You can hear the artifacts

I'm more confused...already got letters posted to those receiving MYTV decorders leh...

The free decoders for BRIM recipients were to be supplied by the operator, not the Government.
There was a possibility of tapping the MCMC USP fund.

Batang Kali, Menara KL and Bkt Sg Besi are on the same channel and broadcasting the same signal in SFN. From Banting the three are all in the same general direction

Not really. There's about few degree differences between Menara KL and Bukit Sg Besi from my home. Not so much and would bring any difference though. 😂

Normal sized antennas are not very directional.

Down south in kluang, only HD5 is stable, the rest are okay on certain days and times, sometimes no signal, and channels do go missing smile.gif  The same applies to msian channels jerks badly at times! So if given a choice njoi or mytv ,my take wl be njoi hmm.gif

Kluang is a poor reception area, close to sea level and blocked to the South by Gunung Lambak

is it not possible to retrofit existing tv towers to digital?  hmm.gif

Only after analog switch off. It is dangerous to work on towers with active TV transmitters and the best site is at the top.
If the tower is UHF and in good condition, you can just replace the transmitter equipment and recycle the antenna and feed.
A gap like Seremban or Langkawi should have been rejected by the MCMC in the tender stage.

Sarawak was the hard state to plan coverage, there is a lack of hill sites on the coast away from Kuching.

Singapore can easily have four multiplexes because they only need a tiny number of transmitter sites to cover the country, so capital and operational costs are low. Once you have that many, using simpler modulation and getting better building penetration makes sense.

Are they building the second mux in East Malaysia?
The commercial channels were not very interested in broadcasting there.

You would be horrified how much the MUX backhaul, maintenance and electricity costs.

Sarawak and sabah frequencies are real joke.
Hilly terrain all over and MYTV uses 600Mhz and above  doh.gif
Current analog frequency is around 200 - 300 Mhz something.
*
The 470-500s are unavailable until after ASO, then the digital will be retuned- they have their eye on the 600 MHz band for other uses in the long term.

Technically Singapore has less justification to use the lowest frequencies above 470MHz, due to their geography, but there is a some "we have got it so won't give it up" going on
