so now astro/hypptv is taking from analog source or digital source

i remember few years back media prima channels on astro got ghosting effect one, its noticeable especially when showing the rolling credits on tvb drama hmm.gif

even got one rare occurrence the screen suddenly became "analog snow flower" before it turned into black screen after 2-3 secs, which made me believe astro was indeed taking from analog feeds laugh.gif
*
It is believed that both Astro and Hypp TV get the feeds directly from Media Prima digitally, maybe from their own private network. Not from analogue or digital TV platform.

I think there's some kind of private broadcast from Media Prima & RTM to Astro/HyppTV (maybe using C band satellite connections)
just like how the international channels providers does for the feed to Pay TV broadcast..
*
Astro don't get Media Prima channels via satellite (C band). I guess, the only possible way is via network.

But i really saw the snowy noise on astro screen b4, and also the ghost shadow last time, however recently these are no longer to be seen. Seeing that how stingy and poor is media prima is, i don't think they want to budget for a dedicated satellite feed which is not cheap, it makes no sense as they take no revenue out of this, somemore they have to pay to astro and tm for the rental of their bandwidth
*
Yes I get what you mean. Last time Media Prima channels used to be like that. Now no more la.

It's not that Media Prima is stingy... It's just that, Media Prima isn't as rich as Astro to have "those things".

life certainly isn't easy for Media Prima employees, heard there got retrenchment/VSS recently

Target audience for TV3 is Malays mah, why would you think TV3 is targeting Chinese audiences?

Most likely is via fibre network lo... But of course, the "private" kind of network, and maybe also the same goes to Digital TV (MYTV/myFreeview) platform as well.

I start to get disappoint on how Malaysia migrating analogue to digital TV platform. It seems that MYTV are putting digital TV as profit first instead of serving/helping the nation.
Keep having this contest, that contest.... Haiz

VP9 codec has hardware acceleration support, but very limited to certain devices support and chips support, especially encoding VP9.

1440p also uses vp9 right? Noticed that my 6700hq cpu usage skyrockets to 25% with 1440p youtube, and up to 35% with 4k sad.gif

Every time i look at my cpu usage on high res youtube videos. feel like upgrading  dry.gif
*
VP9 codec on YouTube uses up to 8K resolution.
Officially, stream YouTube videos in H.264 is only up to 1440p only.
But you can still get the 4K/8K resolution if you use third party software to download the YouTube video.

Hi all,

I'm planning to go digital, what's the best package out there? Cost?

1. Astro NJOI?
2. MyFreeview DTTV?

Any difference?

I'm still using an old CRTV but planning to upgrade to LED TV later/
*
If you thinking of, migrating from analogue TV to digital TV, and then since you are planning to buy a new LED TV, it should come with built-in Digital TV tuner already (or known as IDTV, integrated digital television). So, you no need to use a separate digital TV receiver (e.g. myFreeview box). Just connect to UHF antenna, and before perform Auto Scan on your new TV, make sure you select "Digital TV" or "DTV" option, not "Analogue TV" or "ATV" to get those digital TV channels.

It is good that you make sure you are able to enjoy/receive digital TV services before analogue TV will be shut down in Malaysia on June 2018. So, take this as a technological migration. As of now, MYTV did not offer many channels besides existing free-to-air channels like RTM, Media Prima channels and AlHijrah HD as well as Bernama News Channel, TVi, but MYTV said that more channels coming soon in near future.

Meanwhile, if you are looking for services that offer slightly more channels than current free-to-air terrestrial channels, Astro Njoi could be your next choice. It is a satellite TV service (uses satellite dish to receive), not terrestrial TV service (use UHF aerial to receive). Two different tech, but still, on top of terrestrial free-to-air channels such as from RTM and Media Prima, you get to enjoy more channels from Astro, for free, such as Astro Xi Yue HD, Astro AEC, Xiao Tai Yang, all those. It will be a one-time off installation fee between RM300-400, no monthly fees, no contract.

So in conclusion, of course I advise you go buy new TV first.... Regardless if you go for Astro NJOI or myFreeview DTTV, it is better that you have a new TV set so that not only better overall picture quality, but also you are ready to enjoy HD quality channels. Then, try go receive digital TV with your aerial. After that, it is up to you to decide if you want to watch more channels, then you consider getting NJOI or not.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I'm using an internal TV antenna, one of the reasons why I prefer NJOI as I don't have to keep adjusting the antenna all the time for my mom. Two more questions:

1. If I use NJOI, does it mean I'm using the NJOI remote and not the normal TV remote? Can I switch out the NJOI remote to a universal remote? My mom prefer bigger buttons and the normal remote these days are too small.

2. How do I make sure I get a HD enabled NJOI decoder box? I mean they say check the serial box but does that mean it's better to go and buy a prepaid box first instead of purchasing NJOI directly from Astro?

Many thanks!  notworthy.gif

PS, it says on Astro website
"Only B.yond boxes are HD enabled. Please check your set-up-box serial number to determine if your box is HD enabled box.
The serial numbers below are boxes which are HD enabled.

- PCVNXXXXXXXXXX
- KXXXXXXXXXXXXX
- 95888TAXXXXXXX
- 95888TBXXXXXXX
- 95888TCXXXXXXX
- PCWNXXXXXXXXXX
- PRWNXXXXXXXXX
- PDWNXXXXXXXXXX
- NJOICAXXXXXXXXXX
- HDZPCAXXXXXXXXXX
- DMTVBBXXXXXXXXXX
- PHMWMXXXXXXXXXX
- THDZAAXXXXXXXXXX

Please ensure that your HD enabled box is connected to a HDMI cable to receive channel in HD quality."

First of all, have you tried watching digital TV? The signal reception for digital TV is different than analogue TV, you know? For digital, if you can get signal, you'll get perfect picture quality. If too poor signal, either you get pixelated picture or black screen (No Signal). Unlike analogue, where signal quality matters to your picture quality. Adjusting antenna for digital TV is way easier, once you get strong signal % reading and you can watch it without any pixelation, you can leave the antenna as it is, no need keep adjusting here and there liao. Once u get signal, means ALL channels also get signal. No such thing like TV3 is clearer but NTV7 poor signal, like analogue TV.

1. If you use Njoi, definitely you need to use Astro/Njoi remote control to operate it. As for universal remote control, you need to go to the stores to find oh. I'm not sure about it. As long the universal remote can support Astro, means it can support Njoi. Because Astro and Njoi is actually the same set-top-box model. It's just that the logo and stickers are different.

2. You will get the HD enabled Njoi box as you subscribe. That FAQ is for those who subscribe Njoi at the very beginning of the service launching back in 2012 cuz that time, they use legacy Astro boxes. Now no more already. So no need to worry about it.

Yeah it's true.
Well, you might able to see the difference, if you have both digital TV and Njoi in your house to compare... Lol

But still, picture quality for both RTM and Media Prima is still SD now and it doesn't give really much difference to most viewers, unless you are comparing SD and HD quality channels.

I found out that myFreeview channels are now using HE-AAC Version 2 audio codec. And the bitrate? It's only 32kbps.

If you know, HE-AAC codec is meant for providing good quality audio at very low bitrate. With this latest version 2 of HE-AAC, it is better than the first version of HE-AAC.

I remember few months ago, they use AAC LC codec at 128kbps. But now, it seems that they've changed to HE-AAC Version 2.

Although HE-AAC V2 can provide good quality audio, however 32kbps (Joint stereo) on myFreeview is a shocking low. Better they choose to use 56kbps HE-AAC V2 stereo. But since some broadcasters (especially Media Prima) want to save bandwidth, it is inevitable.
*
Btw, Astro's HD channel uses HE-AAC V1 64kbps on their Stereo audio track, along with AC3 5.1 384kbps for Dolby 5.1 surround sound audio track...

I'm not so sure how much improvement compared to HE-AAC V1 and V2... Is the V1's 64kbps is equivalent to V2's 32kbps, I don't know.

I have 5.1 home theatre setup. I can easily notice the difference of audio quality for each program and channel. Generally, audio quality of Astro SD channels is better than myFreeview. Also, radio channels in Astro sound better than radio channels in myFreeview. Among all the channels in myFreeview platform, Media Prima channels are the most inconsistent ones, where occasionally Media Prima channels have crappy and unstable audio effect.
*
Astro SD channels uses MP2 audio codec, 128kbps. For radio, MP2 192kbps.

Sometimes I wonder, does that little kbps matters to them so much?

Media Prima can sometimes mess up actual 16:9 broadcast into pillarbox. (or mess up recently make programming into letterbox)
Had been seen a few times on NTV7 during "If You Are the One" (非誠勿擾) programming.
Such pillarbox must/should be done on ALL times by ALL broadcasters using 16:9 transmission during ALL 4:3 programming.
Captured via tonton live streaming.

Looks that they are still experimenting and still not so familiar with implementing 16:9 aspect ratio well... biggrin.gif

JoshHD was right "Buy a new TV first!" Thanks sifu!  notworthy.gif
Postscript in case anyone else faced the same issue:

1. I bought a Sony TV with digital tuner
2. The internal antenna was sufficient to receive a clear signal on all channels without needed to move the antenna around unlike the old 'CRT days'  laugh.gif
3. In the end, I saved myself some money by NOT needing to get either NJOI or Freeview Decoder.
*
Glad to hear that biggrin.gif

It is called "Analogue TV", but now you are receiving/enjoying "Digital TV".

However, you can still go for NJOI if you wish to enjoy slightly more channels than what digital TV offers, especially Astro made channels like Astro AEC.
But that's up to you, and you can do so anytime you like.

Yep, thanks boss! Don't really need more, the local TV shows more than enough for my mom.

But by the way, the newer digital channels have preset buttons like 101 for RTM1, 108 for 8TV. How do you make them a ONE button press? Like press 8 for 8TV instead of pressing 108?

For my SONY, I had to put them into a favorite group and ask my mom to cycle up and down for it. Wondering whether possible to be like CRT, press 1 for RTM1, 2 for RTM2, 7 for NTV7 etc.
*
You can edit the channel number on TV settings.

When you perform auto scan, you disable/turn off the "Logical Channel Numbering" or "LCN". This LCN is where digital TV provider (MYTV) assign a channel number for you. Similar like Astro, they can set TV1 for the channel number 101 while 8TV is 708.

If you don't want like this, turn LCN off, so that the channel numbering will sort according to which channel did your TV receives first, followed by the subsequent channels during auto scan. Example your TV detects TV1 first, it will be automatically assigned as channel 1. So it's like, whoever comes first, will be the first, followed by the next ones and so on. You can eventually edit the channel number by yourself if it is from your TV. If it's myFreeview box, I don't think they allow you to edit, not so sure.

Just to recall the news and empty promise from RTM.

It's not empty promise. The channel TV5 was launched with the conjunction of 71th anniversary of RTM, but after the hype is over, the channel reverted back to TVi, which is one of the existing digital-only RTM channel. 😂😂😂

Right now is, all MP channels are still transmitting in 4:3 video.

However, any on-screen elements such as subtitle, channel logo, programme title display on top left corner, are all in 16:9 format.

But, 16:9 programme content would be displayed as either 16:9 fit to screen or 16:9 with letterbox.
If they suka suka want letterbox on 16:9 content, then it will show letterbox. If don't want letterbox on 16:9, then just fit to screen. That's why, this Media Prima ah... No consistency on aspect ratio display mode format one.... Sometimes I get fed up on that. Since Media Prima started with 16:9, just 16:9 all the way lah... Letterbox somemore for what? Aiyo.. mad.gif

The 2 picture you attached, shows that Media Prima added the stupid letterbox on the 16:9 programme.
