Need or not? USB flash drives also have benchmark. ~.~!!!

I think my old 128MB Apacer USB 1.1 sure scores very low mark.

i've used my friends datatraveler II and i can second that. its really damn fast compared to my old skool acer handydrive usb1.1 (of course la because its 1.1 vs 2.0) . hehe. but datatraveler II is still fast compared to other 2.0s that i've used.

Sorry that I cannot follow the rules, because this is the result i tested b4 n the pendrive belongs to my friend.

But this is the best result compare to all the test above.

Pendrive 256MB 20X

2MB Files Test
Read Performance : 519 operation(s)/min (17715 kB/sec, 100x)
Write Performance : 227 operation(s)/min (7748 kB/sec, 44x)
Delete Performance : 1127 operation(s)/min
File Fragments : 1.0
Combined Index : 390 operation(s)/min

Better than Kingston Data Traveller II.

Just for ur reference.

yaosiang,

u will get better result if u use others Card Reader, pls note even though most of the reader rated as USB 2.0, but it's not really up to 480Mbit/s or 60MB/s, normally is about less then 10MB/s. some are about 4.5MB/s, 6MB/s, 8MB/s, 9MB/s.

i read some forums from taiwan, the fatest card reader currently only about 20MB/s, but as far as i know it's not available at local yet.

When running the test did your thumb drive LED flashing? AFAIK the fastest thumb drive nowadays can go 25MB/s. It's impossible that a USB 1.1 can get 31MB/s sweat.gif

OK, this tip is for WinXP. Could also apply to Win2K, but I don't think can for WinME/9x.

Win XP will "normally" NOT enable write caching for flashdrives; if write caching is on, this is why you need to use the Safely Remove H/W icon. The Safely Remove H/W icon tells Windows to flush the cache and commit (i.e. write) everything to the flashdrive so the user can remove it.

You can tell Windows whether or not to use the write cache: Plug in your drive and start Windows Explorer. Go to My Computer, then right-click on the thumbdrive > Properties > Hardware tab > double-click on yr thumbdrive > Policies tab. The options there are slef-explanatory...

i think this benchmark will give only for some file size. i suggest running System File Benchmark of Sandra? That bench can tell the truth of write and read speed also how fast it manage data.

It's very wierd.. why does my nano writes so much faster than it reads? It's the only tflash drive that performs that way...

btw, can some one please benchmark this myflash drive? I'm planning to get it if it is just a little slower than the corsair.

myFlash : http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...63822&CatId=903

Corsair : http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...1180223&CatId=0

Dell 128MB USB dunno 1.1 or 2.0, not stated on the unit. Looking at performance I'll think it's a 2.0.

Interesting thing is, on the cap/cover is the word "M-Systems" - which most of you doing benches will be familiar with, as they have two units in Sandra's list. smile.gif Sorry for the crappy pic tho', taken with my co-worker's Nokia 6260. rolleyes.gif

Pretty good write (faster than my Jetflash!), slow read.

OCZ Rally 2gb. This drive does better with larger files. Note the 64MB results.

Got a problem with my thumb drive (or my pc). Perhaps can discuss here, when i plug in my thumbdrive, the screen show:

L:\(folder name) cannot be located... (i realised mostly the image files).

When i click -ok-, then the window with that mentioned files will pop out. It happened at my pc only, not others. Anyone experience this??

thanks.

i accidentally dropped it, but then now its like the silver pin thing abit bengkok, so when i plug into the pc, it has some "scratching" sound like scraaaaaaaa........against the metal socket on my pc (the usb socket) normally will it harm the socket? well its not the main pins that is scratching, its the "square" outer thing that is causing it

guys, i want to buy a new thumbrive, but i'm confuse whether to buy a thumbrive or a notebook hard disk + ext casing ...
i want to buy corsair voyager 2gb, but with that money i able to buy 60gb notebook hdd + external casing, IMO...
i prefer a more portable device, but with 60gb notebook hdd i also can use it as a backup hdd... furthermore i dont really like to carry the usb cable along with the hdd...
i need you guys' opinion... thanx

HELP... I want to buy a 2GB thumbdrive but don't have any ideas how much does one cost.

On the other hand, thought of buying an MP4 player 'coz it'll also serve as a thumbdrive & it can play videos as well.

Any suggestions as well as the brand that I should buy? I'm a multimedia person, use for saving my animation projects. Should I buy a thumbdrive or just buy the MP4 player?

I searched almost whole lyp, but i cant find corsair voyager 1gb. I'm planning to buy that thumbdrive, so is it a good buy?
At lowyat i can only find czone selling this thumbdrive, but sadly no more stock for 1gb. Do you guys know where else i can find this thumbdrive? Maybe i missed out a shop...

Does anyone have any performance figures for the Crucial Gizmo! Overdrive 1GB USB Flash drive?

They are claiming transfer rates of 13MB/s for Write and 25MB/s for Read. These are achievable using a Dual-Channel controller. It would be interesting to see real figures for this drive.

Hmmm....Pretty good reading speed...It is suppose to be 6/3 only...Using one but lazy to benchmark tongue.gif

I'm not so demanding so this write speed is ok for me.

sorry to burst your bubble but that kingston is a fake. the part number on the packing isn't even kingston's. authenthic kingston part number is DTI/*GB or DTI/256. one more thing kingston doesn't have a 8GB model yet.

how do i know? i sell kingston for a living.

But the fact is you don't get 8gb for RM100. It's a fake, the real size once you repartition it might only be 1gb or even lower. And data you write into it will take a really long time and when you try reading data from the drive, corruption occurs, who would want it then??

Hi just to follow up on the Kingston 8GB DataTraveller, here is an official response from Kingston,

CODE
So far Kingston never produce any model of DataTraveler flash drive in 8GB
capacity. Detail please see below:
http://www.kingston.com/flash/datatraveler_home.asp

The photo attached on the forum was fake. The outside packaging shown it
was KUSB/8G (we only have upto 256MB for this series model) but the casing
design was DTI/xxx version.

Hereby is the verification website, every data traveller outside packaging
will have their own SN # and AC (or LK) number for the verification
purpose. Detail pls see below:
http://www.kingston.com/asia/verify/default.asp

We do have customer wrote to us on the problem they encounterred after
using 8G fake pen drive, hereby is a few common symptom found:
-Windows XP recognises KUSBDTI/8gb Data Traveller USB Flas Drive but will
not open.
-I have just bought a 8 Gb Kingston flash Memory. It has worked fine but it
has now a very strange behaviour.
Whenever I plug in the device it says "insert disk in the player"
-Two weeks ago I bought  usb flash drive of 8 giga in china.Every thing was
ok I saved picture on it and use it,but suddenly all the data "gone" and
when I double click on it it's written"please insert a disk"
-I purchase 4 memory flash in China, non of them works.
KUSBDTI/8GB
SN:Tco7773-00156959
LK:A510M1D-5380562U
- How are you?my name is amr elkilany?,i am living in cairo,?egypt. i have
a problem concerning a kingston flash memory, data travler 8GB,i have got
more than 35 kingston flash memory from dubai they are all 8gb,and they are
all stop working after only one use. They are all read 0 bytes

Purchase fake part will have risk on the functionality and there will not
be any way to get warranty, all these should take into consideration.

In checking the capacity, we would suggest you reformat the pendrive fast
and right click to the pen drive disk drive, to check the property, and
look for the capacity.

Again, thanks for your valuable information.

Thanks & Regards,

LC Chan

This maybe mentioned before, but you guy do know that pretty much all flash based storage (usb/memory) are based on NAND technology that has a limited write times of 100,000 (low end) to 1 million. Most likely other components will fail before the NAND memory, but to take into consideration of programs or OS that frequently write and rewrite to usb/flash memory. Use for mainly back up/file transfer...

Of course u could claim the lifetime warranty and ... yadah... yadah... yadah

so true.

so, that's why i just go for the cheap and "ok" speed flash drive.
too slow one... time wasted... time is invaluable...
too fast one... sure very expensive...

for "a 25MB/s vs a 10MB/s (read)" or "a 10MB/s vs a 6MB/s (write)",
512MB flash will just save u around 30sec...
if... you are copying a 512MB single file.
else... roughly the same.

omg how did u use yr DT2? Pendrives are supposed to be solid-state, normal reading/writing wouldn't make 'em fail in decades, I think.

Did you throw it about or something?

Hehe my Transcend still looks ok, not many scratches or shit like that. That's if you can actually see the freaking unit in the pic below, with the crappy camera in my hp. wink.gif

Esata 2.5inch HDD drives, power provided by usb or firewire. Or the usb/firewire(6pin) 2.5HDD with one cable only

p.s. I am building my esata port multiplier (1.0TB raid) with about 230MB/s read and write very soon

that is just plain stupid. we're talking about pendrives not 2.5" hdds. you can buy a plain notebook for the price of the latest axim but you wont buy the notebook if you are not as stupid as to disregard your need

far too often people are comparing something of the same price but of different value

it does not matter, understand:? you dont see people recommending a dell 700m when someone is looking for a portable pda phone!!!

we are all talking about a thumdrive/flash memory, not something that will crack open the moment it is dropped onto the floor regardless of its "sarotech casing which can protect it very well mar" and not to mention the slow access rate of a harddrive compared to a flashdrive

My friends now all opting for portable hd instead of thumbdrive since hd price is low now. Anyway, the preference depends on the users, I'd rather buy a notebook than a PDA.

U mean he is stupid who bought a expensive USB drive because of the design? U dun have the right to say that. He can buy anything he want with his money.
Why dun u create a thread for the chepest & lousiest USB drive so that u say anything u want there?
