Vanillaware's Dragon's Crown Coming to PS3 and PS Vita

Were you wondering what that "Dragon's Crown" game that appeared in Sony's PlayStation Vita trailer yesterday was all about? The game's newly opened official site has some answers!

user posted image

Dragon's Crown is a new 2D Action RPG from Vanillaware, the developer that's also working on PSP's Grand Knights History for Marvelous Entertainment. Ignition is handling the worldwide publishing on this one. The official site says that it's the second Japan-produced title from Ignition (the first was El Shaddai).

Although the game appeared in Sony's PS Vita trailer reel, the official site reveals it to be in development for both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. The game will see release in Spring 2012 and features support for 1 to 4 players.

George Kamitani is directing the game. Ignition's Kashow Oda is serving as producer.

As detailed at the official site, Dragon's Crown offers "red-hot multiplayer 2D action." Up to four players can team up via online play to work through dungeons, clearing quests and progressing through the game's story.

The lets players build up their character as they collect items, treasure and weapons from the dungeons. You'll need to build up your character to face off agains the screen-filling dragons.

The official site isn't totally clear about this, but it seems that the game's PS3 and Vita version will have cross console play. The official site says "Up to four players work together via PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita."

Visit the official site for additional story and character details. You can see the game's first trailer here:

It's similar because Vanillaware also made Odin Sphere.

Dragon's Crown Originally Planned for Dreamcast

Vanillaware's new PS3 and PS Vita title Dragon's Crown is featured in this week's Famitsu through a four page interview with director George Kamitani. Here's a bit of what's leaked out from the interview via the usual flying get suspects.

•The game's genre is "multi play belt floor 2D action RPG." I'm not sure what the "floor" is supposed to be, but I believe the "belt" means it's a beat-em-up.

•The project got its start 13 years back after Sega Saturn classic Princess Crown. It was originally planned for Dreamcast.

•Actual development did not begin until after Oboro Muramassa on Wii.

•The game will have attacks that make use of stage geography.

•There will be cooperative play elements. The game will support at most four players.

•Vanillaware is currently seeking programmers to finish work on the project.

•Kamitani says that he took the project to a number of publishers, but Ignition gave them the okay.

•Kamitani is a big fan of Golden Axe and King of Dragon, and wanted to try seeing what would happen if those games were evolved while staying 2D.

Finally Vanillaware comes into making games for the Sony hardware

If you mean this is Vanillaware's first game for PS3 & PS Vita, then yes. It's their first game.

But they also made games for PS2 & PSP in the past like Odin's Sphere.

Vanillaware’s next game, Dragon’s Crown, was slated for release on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita sometime this year. The game was going to be published by Ignition Entertainment, who also published Vanillaware’s last console title, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, in North America.

Today, Atlus USA announced that they will be taking over publishing duties for Dragon’s Crown. Additionally, members of Atlus’ own internal development team will be involved with the project as producers. A PlayStation blog post by Atlus USA’s Aram Jabbari specifically mentions Atlus staff who have worked on the Persona games.

The downside to all this is that Dragon’s Crown has been delayed to 2013. Rumours that the game will be priced at $30 are entirely false, Atlus clarify, adding that this would destroy any chance of profitability. They also confirm that the game is still in development for both the PlayStation 3 and Vita.

The game's official website promises some kind of update on March 21. It would probably be news of the release dates for the English version of the game.

Dragon’s Crown will launch for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in North America this summer, publisher Atlus has announced. A Japanese release was previously confirmed for July 25.

The VanillaWare-developed hack and slash, beat ‘em up action RPG will cost $49.99 on PlayStation 3 and $39.99 on PS Vita. It will be available at retail and on PlayStation Network.

In Dragon’s Crown, players will ‘bludgeon, cleave, shoot, and loot’ their way through side-scrolling dungeons; encounter non-player characters like Samuel the Adventurer’s Guild leader, Lucain the wizard, and Rannie the thief, who will join players to help them pick locks, open treasure chests, and reveal hidden passageways; take on various quests and tasks; and unravel the story behind the “ultimate treasure,” the Dragon’s Crown.

The game will feature six playable character classes, each with their own set of unique abilities, and support up to four-person cooperative play (drop-in multiplayer on PlayStation 3 or adhoc network play on PS Vita; cross-play is not supported).

Characters can be upgraded through a “massive skill tree,” whether it’s “beefing up health or magical abilities, or tweaking the abilities of individual characters.”

Playable classes include:

The Fighter: Uses his armor and quick-hitting attacks to tank and destroy enemies.

The Dwarf: Specializes in getting up close and personal with grapple attacks.

The Amazon: Moves quickly and wields a giant axe to unleash massive damage.

The Wizard: Blasts fire at single targets or in pillars to incinerate foes.

The Elf: Uses her bow and agility to launch devastating volleys and escape danger.

The Sorceress: Uses ice magic and summoned skeletons to control the battlefield.
