Vanillaware's Dragon's Crown Coming to PS3 and PS Vita

Were you wondering what that "Dragon's Crown" game that appeared in Sony's PlayStation Vita trailer yesterday was all about? The game's newly opened official site has some answers!

user posted image

Dragon's Crown is a new 2D Action RPG from Vanillaware, the developer that's also working on PSP's Grand Knights History for Marvelous Entertainment. Ignition is handling the worldwide publishing on this one. The official site says that it's the second Japan-produced title from Ignition (the first was El Shaddai).

Although the game appeared in Sony's PS Vita trailer reel, the official site reveals it to be in development for both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. The game will see release in Spring 2012 and features support for 1 to 4 players.

George Kamitani is directing the game. Ignition's Kashow Oda is serving as producer.

As detailed at the official site, Dragon's Crown offers "red-hot multiplayer 2D action." Up to four players can team up via online play to work through dungeons, clearing quests and progressing through the game's story.

The lets players build up their character as they collect items, treasure and weapons from the dungeons. You'll need to build up your character to face off agains the screen-filling dragons.

The official site isn't totally clear about this, but it seems that the game's PS3 and Vita version will have cross console play. The official site says "Up to four players work together via PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita."

Visit the official site for additional story and character details. You can see the game's first trailer here:

No surprise, Vanillaware history:

Princess Crown > Grim Grimoire > Odin Sphere > Muramasa > Grand Knights History > Dragon's Crown

Dragon's Crown Originally Planned for Dreamcast

Vanillaware's new PS3 and PS Vita title Dragon's Crown is featured in this week's Famitsu through a four page interview with director George Kamitani. Here's a bit of what's leaked out from the interview via the usual flying get suspects.

•The game's genre is "multi play belt floor 2D action RPG." I'm not sure what the "floor" is supposed to be, but I believe the "belt" means it's a beat-em-up.

•The project got its start 13 years back after Sega Saturn classic Princess Crown. It was originally planned for Dreamcast.

•Actual development did not begin until after Oboro Muramassa on Wii.

•The game will have attacks that make use of stage geography.

•There will be cooperative play elements. The game will support at most four players.

•Vanillaware is currently seeking programmers to finish work on the project.

•Kamitani says that he took the project to a number of publishers, but Ignition gave them the okay.

•Kamitani is a big fan of Golden Axe and King of Dragon, and wanted to try seeing what would happen if those games were evolved while staying 2D.

If you mean this is Vanillaware's first game for PS3 & PS Vita, then yes. It's their first game.

But they also made games for PS2 & PSP in the past like Odin's Sphere.

Vanillaware’s next game, Dragon’s Crown, was slated for release on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita sometime this year. The game was going to be published by Ignition Entertainment, who also published Vanillaware’s last console title, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, in North America.

Today, Atlus USA announced that they will be taking over publishing duties for Dragon’s Crown. Additionally, members of Atlus’ own internal development team will be involved with the project as producers. A PlayStation blog post by Atlus USA’s Aram Jabbari specifically mentions Atlus staff who have worked on the Persona games.

The downside to all this is that Dragon’s Crown has been delayed to 2013. Rumours that the game will be priced at $30 are entirely false, Atlus clarify, adding that this would destroy any chance of profitability. They also confirm that the game is still in development for both the PlayStation 3 and Vita.

Dragon’s Crown will launch for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in North America this summer, publisher Atlus has announced. A Japanese release was previously confirmed for July 25.

The VanillaWare-developed hack and slash, beat ‘em up action RPG will cost $49.99 on PlayStation 3 and $39.99 on PS Vita. It will be available at retail and on PlayStation Network.

In Dragon’s Crown, players will ‘bludgeon, cleave, shoot, and loot’ their way through side-scrolling dungeons; encounter non-player characters like Samuel the Adventurer’s Guild leader, Lucain the wizard, and Rannie the thief, who will join players to help them pick locks, open treasure chests, and reveal hidden passageways; take on various quests and tasks; and unravel the story behind the “ultimate treasure,” the Dragon’s Crown.

The game will feature six playable character classes, each with their own set of unique abilities, and support up to four-person cooperative play (drop-in multiplayer on PlayStation 3 or adhoc network play on PS Vita; cross-play is not supported).

Characters can be upgraded through a “massive skill tree,” whether it’s “beefing up health or magical abilities, or tweaking the abilities of individual characters.”

Playable classes include:

The Fighter: Uses his armor and quick-hitting attacks to tank and destroy enemies.

The Dwarf: Specializes in getting up close and personal with grapple attacks.

The Amazon: Moves quickly and wields a giant axe to unleash massive damage.

The Wizard: Blasts fire at single targets or in pillars to incinerate foes.

The Elf: Uses her bow and agility to launch devastating volleys and escape danger.

The Sorceress: Uses ice magic and summoned skeletons to control the battlefield.

One thing bothers me is that is this game gonna justify it's price tag?

It's currently about 180 on play Asia. Usually games like this released digitally and sold for slightly cheaper.

If it's like any arcade brawler then 1 campaign should not take long to finish. Of course we all played streets of rage or final fight a million times. XD

Additionally, the book will also include commissioned illustrations of the Dragon’s Crown universe from three Japanese videogame artists—Akira Yasuda (Darkstalkers, Marvel vs. Capcom), Kinu Nishimura (Code of Princess, Virtue’s Last Reward), and Gouda Cheese AKA BENGUS (Super Street Fighter II, Darkstalkers).

I'm not sure if the local shops have the NA version with the artbook (looking at current sellers, they didn't mention it)

I am pre-ordering from Play-Asia they have it and the price is decent.

In Dragon’s Crown, a Game Master will narrate your journey. When the game launches on August 6, Atlus will release a free downloadable add-on to further customize your story with different narrator voices from each of the game’s six playable characters.

It will only be available free for the first month, however, and after that, the ‘Voice Pack’ will revert to a price of $1.99.

Atlus Japan specified that players are expected to take about twenty hours to complete the story mode with each character. Replayability is also granted because certain elements will be unlocked only after clearing the game once, and by additional features like the PvP Arena. Of course the fact that characters play radically different also helps extending the game’s longevity further.

This may come as a surprise to many considering that side-scrolling action RPGs like this one tend to be a lot shorter than that.

The funny part of this all is that the company added to the message a rather cheeky recommendation:

Unlike FF14 which has servers for different regions, Dragon's Crown has no such restriction.

You can play with anyone in the world for FREE!

btw, while waiting for Dragon's Crown, you should get Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara. It's made by the same guy who did Dragon's Crown.

According to some guys on gamefaqs, Dragon's Crown is already available for download on Japan PSN.

File size for PS3 version is at 1.5gb, and the Vita version is at 1.1gb.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/633261-dragons-crown/66715354

edit: the game is only available for pre-order in Japan & will be ready to download on 25 July.

I'm thinking of getting for the PSV in future and my PSV is using R1, so it's kinda obvious why I would want to get that instead of R3 rolleyes.gif
Plus, R3 takes forever to get the DLCs. sweat.gif

US PSN cards can be bought like almost anywhere now, garage sales have so many people selling it.

You should be able to play with anyone, regardless of what region they are from.

You must be rich to buy JP version.
*
Well, to be exact, I am actually getting a R3 JP game, means it's cheaper than its counterpart! Pretty sure HK is going to get the mega title exactly on the release date!

If it's the same case as my R3 JP 1 piece PW2 in which I can even play with players from JPN/KOR, as well as with Chinese version,
then YES, thumbup.gif

I'm thinking of getting for the PSV in future and my PSV is using R1, so it's kinda obvious why I would want to get that instead of R3 rolleyes.gif
Plus, R3 takes forever to get the DLCs. sweat.gif

US PSN cards can be bought like almost anywhere now, garage sales have so many people selling it.

Been a while since I last touched my PS3/PSV though.
You can just add my R1 account(check sig) if you want to add for PSV, since I'm using my R1 account for my PSV.

Atlus is still unveiling new details on the upcoming side scrolling JRPG by Vanillaware.

Today we learn that the game will have three different level caps depending on the level of difficulty. Upon challenging the game for the first time only “Normal” difficulty will be available, with a level cap of 35. Meeting certain conditions linked to the story will unlock the ”Hard” mode, bringing a level cap of 65 and allowing more room for progression.

Upon clearing Hard mode players will unlock “Inferno” difficulty, that brings the level cap up to 99. And that’s not all, as clearing Inferno mode will unlock the Labyrinth of Chaos, an automatically generated dungeon that changes every time it’s challenged.

The publisher also announced that there’ll be items that will allow a reset of learned skills, but those items will be acquired only upon meeting some rather challenging conditions

So, to be clear, Vita version of the game will have online and ad-hoc multiplayer right? And only able to play with another vita users unless they use cross save to play on PS3 which also means to buy the game twice. Amirite?

Basically, both PS3 and Vita version supports online mulitplayer using PSN account.

PS3 and Vita version have cross-save features, but it does not support cross-online multiplay between PS3 and Vita.

Alrite, thanks for the info. The next question is, will there be region restrictions for online play? e.g R3 players can play alongside R1 players or not?

I've look up through the internet for this question myself before as well. But so far, until the game is release, there is no definite answer to this particular question yet.

So if you are that concern of region restrictions for online play, you could just wait out until someone actually tested it out during the game's release.

Here's more info from Siliconera:

QUOTE
There are two methods of online matchmaking for Dragon’s Crown. They are Random and Friend Entry. In Random Entry, you’ll get to play with different people from around the world. These players will be close to your level, so you won’t have to worry about playing with others who are too strong or weak. As the name implies, Friend Entry is where you’ll get to play with your buddies via PlayStation 3 or Vita.

The PlayStation 3 version of the game will support a combination of local play and online matchmaking. For example, you could play with two players on the PlayStation 3, then have two random players join your game in Random Entry fashion to fill up the remaining slots.

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/07/11/drago...sJbmPO8EpKTx.99

Based on that statement alone, you can safely assume that there will be no region lock for online multiplayer.

Apparently, they will release english voice over the same time as the JP release (or perhaps it's already in the game itself which allows you to change the voice in the beginning?). Of course, don't see the option of switching JP to EN subtitle... Guess we'll find out tomorrow.
A guy has posted a video about 4 hour of gameplay...

The Japanese version of Dragon's Crown will be available for download on Asia PSN tomorrow.

http://blog.asia.playstation.com/view-blog...0&blogPost=8162

Before you start downloading, you should know that the Japanese version doesn't have English text. It only has English voices for the game.

Finally, got my hand on the copy! Well, Digital Copy...

Sure it came out a little later than I thought! But I was fond of it...
Only played as the butch Dwaft! Felt awkward at first... but the learning curve isn't so bad...
He can pretty much pick up anything and throw them into hordes of enemies for additional damage (too bad, not chests or crates or even npc though)...
Well, if he can't grab the enemy, like Boss, just pick up the boulder and throw at him for some fun effect... The downside, it's a little hard to control where it's thrown in a skirmish, or I haven't grasped the feel of its awkward control yet...
Abusing Evade could literally cancel all attack animation and get out of the sticky situation or simply continue the brutal combo, of course requiring good controlling skill...
Attached Image

Needless to say! Some gameplay pictures!

Attached Image Character setting screen... You can actually create all characters in a single save file.
Attached Image Attached Image
The score in center is literally the EXP for the player, and other than defeating enemies, or from chest, you can get extra point by picking up the score items scattered across the map (for vita, screen touch on those glowing sparkles will cause those items to drop out from it).

By touching on the suspicious wall or door, you can either have the thief telling you something fishy about the wall or he can unlock the door for you to access secret chambers.

Attached Image
by completing Errand from the guild, you will unlock the treasure art for the gallery... it is part of trophies as expected...

the vita version can coop online with other vita players only on PSN, but cannot coop with ps3 players.

according to this article by PS Asia, R3 got artbook: http://asia.playstation.com/sg/en/newsdetail?id=791

spent 2 hours on it. great game. my only gripe is the controls feel too 'tight'. might need some getting used to.

it runs at 1080p, so everything is crystal clear.

If you cannot wait, then buy R1.

If you want to save money then buy R3, because it is cheaper then R1.

Been playing this like mad last night and I've FINALLY unlocked the Online mode.

All I can say is, if you guys want to co-op you need to spend at least 3+ hours of rushing through the story in order to unlock the Online mode.
Before that you can only multiplay through locally on the same machine.

Here's the best part, you need to unlock the online mode for EVERY GOD DAMN CHARACTER YOU MAKE. laugh.gif

Conclusion: This function alone made me very disappointed with the game such as this when it boasts so much about co-op play.
I mean playing locally etc is fine and all but we're already at the age where online play is equally as important. sweat.gif

Edit - Forgot to add on, for the people who wants to know about the dual audio stuffs on the R1.
The dual audio works FOR CHARACTERS ONLY so far, the narrator and etc are all in English and can't be changed.
You can change the narrator so I would assume it'll be those DLCs and stuffs, most likely this would include the JP narrator in the future but for now it's not available.
All the NPCs you bring are all in English, the only JP voice you'll be hearing is probably yourself(since you can set it upon character creation) and maybe the other people who made their chars with JP voices.

Is online mode for each character unlocked by finishing the single player story for each of them?

I have no idea as I've not completed the campaign/story yet but judging from how the game works, the Online-play can only be unlocked after you've progressed to that part of the story.
If you don't have access to that yet, you can say goodbye to Online-play. rolleyes.gif

Edit - If there are any PSV players out there, will you kindly fill me/us in on how would your Online-Play works ? Because I'll be damned if you can only play with others the moment you progressed to that point of the story as I mentioned.
I would assume it might be that way too because that's when you can access to the "Lobby".

So i noticed playasia changed the details for the dragon's crown pages. R1 versions with artbook more expensive and no free shipping, R3 english don't even have any artbook listed. Will those that pre-ordered before they changed it still get what they want?

You will just need to complete the story mode until certain level with just 1 character will do!

Normally (when online feature is unlocked), when you first starting the game and before entering a dungeon, the game will prompt you whether you want to activate the online feature, otherwise, you may set it in your start menu while you are in the Wagon screen or Gate screen.
You can either enter straight to the dungeon and it will let you partake any ongoing game at maximum 4 players, or you can just select the 1st option from your start menu while your online mode is on, it let you join randomly. The second one is to invite your friends, probably set yourself up as host (I haven't tried as I just joined randomly atm), the 3rd is the ADHOC mode.

Basically, you can join everyone who have enabled their online mode, and even join in the dungeons they host which you haven't beaten (said, B-route), well, you have to choose which route to take after all. But you better gear up as B-route is harder than A-route if you haven't beaten it before. And if you choose the route different from others, then I believe you'll be re assign to another party who is playing the same route as long as you can still fit in... I don't know if it will continue your game when it couldn't detect others playing or you're just returned to Gate screen etc, since I usually choose the same route in the same session.
Note: Beating the B-route of a dungeon in others' game, don't count as you clear the B-route yourself if you haven't done so, unless you are the one who host the dungeon and somebody else join in helping you to clear it. BUT Mission objective DOES count!

By reaching a certain level you mean when you reach to a certain part of the story right ?

Anyway, as for the Online lobby I was only prompt 2 options since I'm playing the PS3 version.
It was either join a room randomly or join a friend's room.
Judging from the Friend's room part, it's like you'll be only able to join their room if it's there or something.
Not sure how this works since I've only unlocked it not too long ago and none of my friends reached this far yet. sweat.gif

I also tried to join random games but it kept failing me for some reason, after that I just gave up as it was constantly disturbing me when it was trying to "sync" while I was halfway through a dungeon. sweat.gif
But as of now, I still have no damn idea how to tell the difference between a hoster or people who joined in your game/etc.
Will try it out again tonight and see.

I see... mine is VITA ver....
Yes, see the spoiler in my previous post, that's the part you'll unlock online feature after you progress your story(Note: Sora, I think I might have misunderstood the point you made... YES, You are right, every new character will start a new, means NEW adventure, have to unlock SEPARATELY each character (since after online mode is unlocked, there is no way you can use your lvl 1 character to fight in a lvl 17 dungeon) BUT the items/equipment ARE SHARED among the characters!
So far no issue joining random session... I haven't had a chance to try the 2nd option as I am the only person playing it now...
BUT the advantage of PS3 over vita is you can have 2~3 players join in immediately i.e. ask your brother/neighbors/gf biggrin.gif..

Also, you may want to head back to your HQ to see if you have turned off your partner slots... For one mission, it forces you to clear a stage single-handily, so it's important you turning it back on after all or nobody can join you including NPC...

I believe being host is using the Wagon to select a dungeon and wait for someone else to join in or the npc. Using Join randomly option = using the gate exit (random destination after all)
I also believe RED indicator atop characters' head is the host, the rest are NPC/random/buddy players(blue, green & yellow). Move cursor and highlight the sprite will show you their PSN ID, I think...

Oh, I see.
So that also applies for the PSV version, right ? The unlocking part that is, cause I was wondering if you could like just play ad-hoc from the beginning or something. sweat.gif

Also, you can just create a new character and head into the "Gate screen" to play online right ? It felt like I needed to be in that new unlocked area before I can play online.
So I assumed that we needed to progress through to that point of the story before we can play online with that said character, it'll be really stupid if that's the case. doh.gif
Though I honestly think that this is quite a flaw on the online part, it feels like they should have it like Castle Crasher's style.
Where if you create a multiplayer game, anyone can just drop in and out anytime or whatever else it'll be just a single player game.

Sora, I have edited my previous post!
I had misunderstood your point and made clarification! You were right for saying EACH Character has to unlock their own Online play (I was interpreting that you need to complete all characters story mode in order to play online doh.gif , my bad) BUT that is a requirement for a Trophy though!

It's not flawed... it's just how the story is played out... I have mentioned the reason why in my clarification, you'll know why you can't start a fresh character and head out straight hoping you can join online play (recalled they have stated that they will allocate players based on their character level, so you won't see a huge difference in LVL among the players)!

Of what I have gathered so far, the difference of Vita VS PS3 are just the frame rate, touch screen, ADHOC vs multi-controllers (perhaps the structure of the online mode is different?)... Content wise, they are all the same...

Ah... so I was right after all. sweat.gif
I was hoping I was wrong, but I guess not. laugh.gif

But yeah, I see what you mean but regardless I really don't think they should restrict players like that.
I mean, I just want to play with friends online at my own free will.
What's the problem in that ? Why would the developers have to restrict me to such conditions just to not see a huge level difference ? sweat.gif
Because I'm sure as hell they can come up with better filtering system or what not in order to go through with the "same level in the same area" kind of thing.

I can't imagine how would this turn out when the game turns really old, most of the players(pubs) would be super high level and when a newbie starts off playing he won't get to find anyone to play with. doh.gif

And yeah, I heard the frame rate is bad on the PSV. Is it really that bad ?

Sorry about that for confusing you.

The thing is once you unlock your online mode, if you notice the recommended level is different from before the online mode is enable? You will even see the B-Route! It's no longer lvl 3 for the first dungeon... It's 17!!! It's impossible to beat it with a lvl 1 character, well, not that it let me try...
But still even at few lvl higher than recommended lvl, it can get overwhelming sometimes (in fact, it's the equipment that makes the difference, and what is the requirement? Character LVL!) Well, honestly, the survival of low level character is pretty slim as you get lvled up only after battle, and a high level in a low level dungeon will just break the game... Good thing is you can lvl up pretty fast if doing right... But guess what, I wonder if the player in normal difficulty can join the game of higher difficulty, that I haven't tried (talking about the 35~40ish)!

A side note, as PS3 doesn't have touch function, I bet offensive runes are just pretty much useless most of the time in single player mode rolleyes.gif

About frame rate being bad? Well, hardly notice, and even if it does get bad, it's when the situation gets out of control and I really wanted it go slow on me for I can take a breath in the chaos (a con about the DC I realized, is having too many sorceress/wizards in a game can be a curse than bless, they are just too "flashy" and really getting in the way...)

Ah, well online aside I guess it makes Dragon's Crown unique but I'm really hoping they don't keep this restricting on for good. sad.gif
I might need to change my router settings tonight maybe I would be able to join random games rather than just failing non stop. sweat.gif

And yes, indeed I would say the PSV has the upper-hand on that part since you can just touch the screen and such.
That is wayyyyy easier compared to the PS3's version where I need to move the damn cursor around and click to interact. doh.gif
Yeah, I kinda figured Wizards and Sorcs might be the "top-tier" class in this game but I'm using Amazon at the moment and I find her pretty fun as a mashy character. laugh.gif

Hope you get it to work... It's really nicer just to mop through the dungeon with a player than a npc...

Hehehe, in fact, I resort to my R stick instead of touch screen since my screen gets dirty overtime...
I found it isn't all that bad with the stick control cursor, after all it has slight tracking function when it's close to a rune or the scattered score item. Touch is great only when you want to quickly form the rune combination during the battle especially those with offensive effects, but I can get by and do fine using the stick with just mild annoyance. Well, rune isn't a necessity, many times we can clear the battle faster than inciting the rune, offensive rune is often time useless... don't know how it fares in higher difficulty though...

Frankly, no class is top or low, everyone does it job equally fine! My dwarf output is higher than fella sorceresses/wizards, and last longer, but the only bad thing is I can't heal without item... Wizards can support at range but it get slaughtered really fast (the meteor is just nasty!)! Warrior has a good ability to cover his feeble companions like elf, wz, sc and allow them to snipe away at the back! Chimera and Red Dragon are few of those bosses using breathe attack which you need warrior to cover them. Dwarf can simply jump dodge away and deal continuous damage, so as Amazon. Amazon hits as hard as Dwarf or higher depend on the set up. Sorceresses have great support skills that can be vital in tough boss battle particularly Wraith, Red Dragon...! Great thing about Dwarf though, grapple and throw is his asset, he can even grab an attack of a boss and haul it back to them...
In conclusion, there is no best class, it's just some are easier to master while some require skill to keep them survive and if you perfect it, they are just more brutal (e.g. WZ which is a powerful house but also a pushover... dealing crazy damage but take hits like puszz! Use item, recharge mp, dodge and reposition, yeah it sure requires lots of good skill! You'll feel the pain when fighting

I am in R3 server (HK to be precise)... but I believe I had actually ran into gamers from japan too... I don't know what's gone wrong... But then again, it could be the PSN server issue...

NOTE: If you have reached the level cap (35), DO NOT take any quest! Or you're wasting the EXP reward for completing it, proceed to beat the game until it raises your level cap! I just wasted 10k worth of exp without pay attention to my lvl...
But of course, a 2~3 round continuous run through online mode can easily gain back the lost...

Downloadable Version of Dragon’s Crown Shows Strong Sales in Japan, Retail Version Still Hard to Find

From today’s Media Create Japanese sales charts we learned that Dragon’s Crown is doing really well at brick and mortar stores in Japan. Well enough to have been very difficult to find since last Saturday.

Vanillaware’s official twitter account just gave us a further detail on how the downloadable version of the game is doing on the PlayStation Store as well.

QUOTE
About 180,000 copies of Dragon’s Crown sold in the first week. The Digital Download version is also going strong. Thank you very much!

You need to kill a total of 9 bosses before you can start playing Online.

I got it when I'm around your level, I rushed all the way though.
Didn't sidetrack for quests or what not at all. sweat.gif

Nope, you can't max everything.
I checked the boards and they all mentioned you can't max everything.
Choose your skills wisely. tongue.gif

I heard there'll be a reset skill points in Inferno difficulty though.

The boobs will quickly go into oblivion... as it is overshadowed by the intense battle with explosion, lightning strikes, flying knifes, arrows, bodies got thrown around, and etc...

Better patch the game with jiggle physic so that the sorceress can unleashed her weapon of mass distraction and enhance the gameplay better.

i hope this is not the only thing that people will remember about this game for years to come.

hopefully i can get my copy soon, kinda miss side scrolling rpg....

Unfortunately, it doesn't come with the artbook. I heard the artbook will only be available on August 6, the official launch date.

Last night, I played until the end of the first quest with the Sorceress & the game is awesome. They were not joking when they said the game is beautiful because the graphics is really very nice to look at. No wonder it's sold out everywhere in Japan.

Damn, I need human player for sure in higher difficulty... AI npcs kept screwing up... Not that it is unplayable but some quests are just nearly impossible to solo or with 3 dumb AIs... Well, even regular runs will end up soloing anyway, since the AI has poor survival instinct...

Any player (VITA vers) here?

NOTE: Need to verify...
I had played with few players earlier (each of us was defeated at least once) and then as I was done and head back to the Church, it turns out that there are a few extraordinary high level bones I can resurrect and in fact, these character names were the same as those player characters joining my session earlier...! Probably only for Host (my first time too)...? since i normally joined as guest, I usually get bones that were either 3 lvl higher or lower at best. It seems you will get bones of defeated actual player character when you host a session...

Okay, I was wondering what was causing me to constantly fail to join any game online but after some tweaking I found my problem.

Apparently if I don't set my MTU to automatic in my PS3's Network settings, I won't be able to join any game. sweat.gif
I changed it to Automatic and I can join any game just fine now. doh.gif

Haha, too bad! but glad to hear you managed to get to join online session!

You should start beating the game and raise the difficulty! It's getting more challenging if you don't lvl up and get good equipment... Even those higher lvl players still get slaughtered easily when they got outnumbered...

I for one, can't remember the damn combination for nuts.
So all I tend to do is just try different combination when the scriptures for the runes appears.
I'm sure you'll get it eventually, unless you're missing the coloured stone which you can buy from Lucain's shop.

Some are just quests requirement... you won't miss them... and so you won't get to use them much...
You don't need to cast them in order, which is a good thing!

Those you normally see are usually offensive/buffs rune magic:
TTF, ECG, CSW, GWS, PTF, DBG, PAD, SOL, SOD
I in particular remember the actual name of the rune magic rather than the abbreviation somehow...

Rarer you'll find:
DSB, THF, TPI...

Story/side Quests:

at 1st i also stuck, but the quest description is misleading. you're supposed to go conqueror sanctuary, not ancient temple ruins, the 1st map.

well that was how i got stuck, but i move on to conqueror sanctuary and progress from there.

I guess it's a translation mistake for the US release...

It is very clear in JP ver... one is Ruin of Ancient Temple and the other is Ruin of Old Royal City, literally...

It is... The only bad thing about Dwarf is... poor anti air attack and air combo... grapple is awesome, but can be troublesome sometimes as you might not meant to grab the enemy and while you are holding the enemy, you're vulnerable!

I am not sure if this applies to other melee classes... I thought the megasmash was invincible, but it happened once I got frozen by orc high mage (seen in hard mode) during the animation. As far as I've observed, the invincible frame last as long as his arms are still holding up, but this case it wasn't... unsure.gif

Yeah, I can see that judging from how the AI gets slaughtered so easily when the bosses are flying in the air.
Plus how he just gets knocked back each time he's carrying something. laugh.gif

But we'll see, all of the classes are fun to use anyway and we need to finish all of them for trophy. tongue.gif

This game looks very addictive from the videos...

U guys bought R1 or R3? I saw sellers selling R1 copy which comes with artbook.. Slightly more expensive than R3 only..

Any other differences between R1 or R3?

Thanks smile.gif

Region doesn't matter when it comes to Multiplayer other than that I'm not sure what are the differences when it comes to the future DLCs.

Physical differences... none other than the one you've mentioned.

Yeah, I can see that judging from how the AI gets slaughtered so easily when the bosses are flying in the air.
Plus how he just gets knocked back each time he's carrying something. laugh.gif

But we'll see, all of the classes are fun to use anyway and we need to finish all of them for trophy. tongue.gif
*
Actually getting knocked back is good sometimes as it renders you "invincible"...
You don't want to receive too much at harder difficulty.

Just to share a few notes about the negative on dwarf...
You see, Dwarf has two skills which enhances the great Pump Up ability!
One cut down damage while pump up is in effect
another one absorbs some damage which reduces chance of being knocked down!
Fast enemy like the goblin elite soldier (red dark sinister look goblin) or the dark skeletal knight can deal insane damage, sure with those skills you get less damage, but their fast so the damage racks up rather quick...
So getting knock back is good in this case when you screwed up blush.gif !
Basically, just don't screw up in harder game...

The bombs are useless when it drops into water... obviously. So must be thrown wisely...
Also, grapple while remains strong most of the time, it is less useful when there are more elite monsters which are immune to grab at higher difficulty...

But this doesn't stop Dwarf kicking ass hardcore... The mega thor hammer smash and bare fists are where he shines biggrin.gif !!!
And whats more fun? Try to harass the town people with body press, hahaha! But enough is enough... leave them alone or you'll... hehe

at 1st i also stuck, but the quest description is misleading. you're supposed to go conqueror sanctuary, not ancient temple ruins, the 1st map.

well that was how i got stuck, but i move on to conqueror sanctuary and progress from there.

First time I play Sorceress, I was shocked to know that I have to refill my mana like Naruto recharges his chakra. After a while I got used to it & it became like second nature to me.

I can't wait to get off work so I can continue my adventures tonight with the Sorceress.

That bold part alone makes his specialty rather useless in the late game, which is rather... well, sad. sweat.gif

Well, that's what he is good for... Mighty brute force is what he is good at, then abuse two moves with invincibility: Evade and Megasmash although he can still take hit like a dwarf (providing you regularly pump him up with spinach whatever)!

Constantly stay on the offensive side and avoid getting thrashed is the key of playing Dwarf!
Play like a chicken will just get killed and died a coward anyway...
The best defense is offense after all! smile.gif ! It will be a thrill not sad once you get past it!
Even with some negatives I realized, I still find him a great class to play with... Of course, what makes DC good, is every class is just as fun to play as!

According to some people at gamefaqs, if you play on mulitplayer for at least one full dungeon run, you can find the bones of other players, even while offline and their levels do not scale to yours.

One guy playing on normal difficulty have a lvl 84 Elf and a lvl 91 Sorceress in his party. laugh.gif

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/633261-dragons-crown/66882465

This reminds me of the pawn system in Dragon's Dogma. biggrin.gif

The official release date for R3 is August 6 but some shops have broke the street date & started selling it yesterday.

Gamers Hideout & Pbbseller are among the shops selling R3 now.

The interface (picking loot, activating runes) how the game was made (a dungeon run is bout 10min long, personally I can't play beat-em-ups for more than 1hr 'cause it get highly repetitive), makes it suitable for a handheld.

Also the Vita's sleep function means you can turn on/off this game on a whim.

go to stables. hit start button, then choose join friend's room. if your friend is playing and has his/her game set to online mode, u can see it, and join from there.

if want to gather, ask all members to go stables 1st, and then join up.

After unlocking the online last night, I played a couple of games with Japanese people. The game was smooth & no lag at all. I even managed to collect some high level bones of JP players!

I noticed that their characters voice is in Japanese, while my sorceress was talking in English. That's so cool. I had so much fun last night & I can't wait to play again tonight.

Spent most of my weekend playing this game tongue.gif
I didn't fully focused on my single character though since I was trying to complete at least one playthrough on my other classes as well.

Almost completed my Sorc playthrough while my Dwarf only unlocked online mode so far. laugh.gif
My main is only one step away from Inferno just that I'm taking it slow, just grinding and farming a little bit. sweat.gif

And man, I'm loving the gallery so far.
I've completed like almost the entire gallery and this is one of my favourites, I'll leave the link in the spoiler tag if you're afraid it'll spoiler(god knows how it will).

Just clarify things further, you're only allowed to change the audio to either ENG or JP of your created character(at the beginning).
Narrator can be changed once you completed the first playthrough of the said class.
Each of them can be bought from Lucain's shop for 1mill whistling.gif

i am using wizard and my lvl is 18 only. i think need to lvl up my character first before starting to find  the first talisman

you need to level up some more. the bosses on the "B" route are more tougher.

you could also try to join some random online games & collect bones. if you are lucky, those bones you find could be of high level player that may help you in your quest to get the talismans.

Yes, Dragon's Crown is also out for PS3 & got local coop for 4 players. I am playing on PS3. tongue.gif

Random players from around the world can also join your local coop session if there is a vacant slot.

Looks like the cheapskates who pirated this game is in for a shock because the game will crash when you fight the pirate boss. laugh.gif

I saw this on gamefaqs:

i suggest taking a fighter to tank for you & leave the other 2 slots open. that is how I completed the mage tower guild quest.

if your party is full, they will kill all the mage before you can deflect the magic. doh.gif

I am playing with sorceress. I tried to do it solo at first & got killed by the mob. Then I bring along a fighter to tank for me & managed to deflect the magic to open the hidden door.

btw, you have to beat the first 9 bosses to enable online mode. Once you have done that, go to the gate to access online mode.

Your stats are scaled to Normal's Lv35 cap and you have to collect all 9 talismans again to fight the ancient dragon.

Actually this game got DLC. On the main menu, there is an option to download DLC.

btw, you might be interested to know that people on gamefaqs are saying that there is no region lock for the Vita save file. They can transfer the save file from Japanese Vita game to US PS3 game: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/633261-dragons-crown/66896185

Just to clarify this a little bit, you'll need to collect the talismans for their respective difficulties you've entered.
Each time you kill the Ancient Dragon(on the said difficulty) your talismans will reset back to 0.

For example if you're on Hard mode with total of 6/9 talismans but when you head back to Normal mode, it'll be back to 0/9.
If you decide to go back into Hard mode it'll be 6/9 again.

And yes, you can just complete all the quests in Normal mode.

thanks for the clarification bro. i think i understand how it works now.

its a system to prevent you from farming the ancient dragon easily right? since the ancient dragon gives u alot of S rank items haha.

but one question, if i switch back to normal mode, and get capped to 35, will i still get exp?

Yeap, that's right.
No, they'll only scale your items to fit as a lvl35.
That's about it, you're still getting EXP but of course in a "Normal mode" scale. laugh.gif

3 sets per character as far as I learned...
Create a dummy character and speed run the games through all levels of LOC just to get the skill reset....

Limited, not farm-able.
According to one guy in GameFAQs, you can get 4 in the Labyrinth.

As long if it's the same PSNID, it's no problem.
Just use the upload/download function in the game.

If you're saying you want to transfer it to another PSNID, nope. Totally not possible.

You get the amnesia potion for every 3rd floor you clear in the Chaos Labyrinth (i.e. 3,6,9,) and you can only get them ONCE FOR EACH OF THOSE FLOORS. There are more than 9 floors in the labyrinth so you can keep clearing them for more amnesia potions.

Yeah, it's quite unfortunate as well.
I was hoping they could do the local something like Uncharted 3's multiplayer where the user can load their character data using their PSNID. sad.gif

Which would allow them to play their own character(based on the account you used) in any PS3 they go to. laugh.gif

If you're referring to the game's region itself, I'm not too sure if there are any differences.
Chances are, I don't think there will be any difference.

But as mentioned in my previous post, you need to use the same PSNID for it.
It's storing based on your PSNID, different ones means it'll be different.

Hi everyone! Just want to share that if anyone looking for a physical copy of Dragon's Crown (R3), please head down to Berjaya Times Square at erm...6 Floor or something. There's a shop selling.

I just got mine today while window shopping around there. Not sure if I got my throat cut but I got it at RM170. Cheers!

I suggest you damage 1/3 of its health in the lair first then finish the rest at the corridor. Have the door opened first before you wake it up and get out when you're ready.

Great so far though only one quest in. But wanna ask, what's the Shortcuts for in the Equipment section?
Seems can map the face buttons to equipment, but I have no idea what's the use for that! Anyone care to enlighten?

If you are talking about the PS3 version, then the price for R3 is around RM165 to RM170, depending on which shop you bought it from.

Those guys who said the price is RM139, is actually taking about the Vita version which is cheaper.

I think it's only for faster select magic or item if you map them, but no use for equipment in the bag. It's kinda weird they put usable item/magic in the same section with your accessories unsure.gif

Fast access to the most used items...?
Since it can get really hectic to scroll through the item you carried while the battle gets too intense! Trust me you would not want to take the time scrolling through the list as you might get wasted in split second for staying motionless in one place at higher difficulty if you're at lower level...

Obvious use. E.g. for dwarf, you can switch between two weapons (enable double mega thor hammer smashes) rather fast this way... or for any characters to access the item skills faster.

QUOTE(ajis @ Aug 6 2013, 08:31 AM)

Not really! It has some limited uses for Melee fighter... When their weapons are dropped, either megasmash or got knock off... just switch the weapon... but you can only do it once in a row (due to cool down time, mean you can't switch back to previous weapon immediately)...
I found it more useful for Dwarf megasmash!
As the merit to switch between spoiled equipment and fine one is limited by item slots, so can't really justify its use if you do this... Might as well switch the bag in the mid game route selection screen...
I haven't used Sorc/Wiz much, so my best guess is there should be some uses for them too... Weapon attribute which affects the type of magic they pull out too...

I thought the red dragon was hard but ancient dragon is even more harder because that thing can heal itself. Everytime I bring it down to 3/4 of it's HP, it will heal itself & blow away my party. To make it worse, random people cannot join in to help.

How do you guys manage to kill the AD?

Since I don't take npc as my companion... I ended up solo it...
It took me few tries but:

1. As soon as you enter the screen, stay behind the blocks or (tap evade crazily)
2. Whack away at him but pay attention to its breathe attack (two types, one is explosive and the last one is a fire stream), evade all away to the top of the blocks for the latter (must be fast)
3. About every 1/4 hp taken from it, it starts to retreat into background. Take extra caution!!!
4. Try to deflect as much green projectiles as it will destroy the Blocks on both side eventually (Probably the 3rd time it flies into background)
5. It will always pull the One-fit kill breathe attack before it gets closer to the platform, so if you can't stop the blocks being destroyed... you are screwed, unless you have evadex4 times which I heard it could help in some japanese forum or execute the mega smash timely...

I find its most dangerous attack is the tornado which you will take at least few hits and it usually follow up with other attacks while you busy evading the tornado.. So having max the evade helps you a lot...

Obviously, lvl up does help... but i don't know about the Infernal level...
(And i once attempted without talisman... it was a futile quest, as AD is totally invincible laugh.gif ... )

Just hit the projectile?
You didn't notice you can hit projectiles... most... if not all and deflect it back at attacker?

Anyway, try your best... It really needs some skills and even with dwarf, it was very close... I was lucky enough to beat it just before it gets away from the platform the 3rd time...
I can't imagine Elf/Wiz/Soc attempt at it though... Which I'm afraid I might not be able to handle the dragons with these 3...

I knew from some japanese forum that you can pretty much destroy most of its attacks before they release full force... Of course, that requires you to have player characters instead of dumb AI to assist you...

No, I didn't notice I could hit those green projectiles because they were mostly flying in the air.

I am playing as Sorceress & currently my level is 30. Maybe I am too low level to kill the AD....

Oh I see... Sorry, didn't know you are using Sorceress...

Well, that's a character for advanced player, which really is blush.gif ... After all, only melee fighters have evade and megasmash to exploit for avoiding damage at the right time... To see no attack with invincibility frame avail to exploit, that will make the fight harder I believe (since that's what I rely on avoid getting slaughtered most of the time)...

Yeah, try to level up more and gets good equipment and try again... BTW, I just learned that it has weakness to Ice...

Actually, Sorc also have evade. It more like teleportation. I will try to use it in my next encounter with the AD.

Thanks for the hint about the AD's weakness to ICE.

What level was your dwarf when you fought the AD?

LVL 35.

I also learned that the Protection spell of Sorceress helps a lot! so may be you should invest in it and let your npc whacks away its life!

Another thing I neglected to mention is that the most annoying part of the AD battle is the minions it summons... The skeletons! later difficulty, it actually summons the Dark Skeletons (Ice) too and to make it worse, the little buggers carry the bow guns...
I don't know what Sorc skills you can deal with these buggers fast enough before they become a major nuisance... Since for dwarf, I just need to double thor hammer smashes and they are goner while the dragon takes huge damage too (yeah, my double MS take almost 1/4 of AC life each time the first time I beat the dragon)....

I have protection but it's not maximized. I also have Blizzard.

I guess I will have to level up to 35 before I fight the AD again & you are right about the skeletal minions. They are damn irritating.

It's a pity you are playing on Vita. Otherwise I would ask you to help me to fight the AD. tongue.gif

Yep, I am on PS3 & I am also playing randomly with Japanese players.

Only player waiting at the gate can join your battle against AD, after all you need the rune to reveal the Mysterious Zone, I guess that's the reason why no one joins you as they could not get through the gate without the key hmm.gif ?
In case you didn't know, any effect from the Goddess blessing was nullified too when you enter the M zone... So yeah... lots of odds against you...

Are you sure? I thought the gate was for finding random games or joining friends game. I didn't know people can join your game at the gate.

Just beat all the dungeons (cleared all A-route)... Go to the Wagon screen or Gate screen afterwards.

Click start in those screens and you should see it if it doesn't automatically prompt you to connect online...

you can access the online mode AFTER you gain access to the stable,

then at the tavern make sure your companian icon says 'joinable',

first time at the stable i think they automatically pop out 'going online mode',

if you still cannot join with people, maybe there is no one's playing the current dungeon?

right now only japanese player flooded the online, wait after official release, then player online increase.

Finally managed to kill Ancient Dragon in Infernal last night. I just had to keep my AI sorceress alive so she can cast Protect and I can use Meteor. Been trying to kill it the past 2 days and the fight that I managed to kill it was quite easy for some reason.

I think it's only for faster select magic or item if you map them, but no use for equipment in the bag. It's kinda weird they put usable item/magic in the same section with your accessories unsure.gif
*
Hmm yeah and to map the buttons to the equipment that you are currently using... why would i want to map the face button to a sword when it's already my default weapon? Lol.. still confused sleep.gif

QUOTE(El-LoboSolitario @ Aug 6 2013, 08:32 AM)
Fast access to the most used items...?
Since it can get really hectic to scroll through the item you carried while the battle gets too intense! Trust me you would not want to take the time scrolling through the list as you might get wasted in split second for staying motionless in one place at higher difficulty if you're at lower level...

Obvious use. E.g. for dwarf, you can switch between two weapons (enable double mega thor hammer smashes) rather fast this way... or for any characters to access the item skills faster.
*
Hmm yeah but as I mentioned, they only seem to map the buttons to the weapons and accessories that are currently equipped on the character? Or maybe I just haven't experimented around enough. So if it is like you say, then how exactly do I switch to the back-up weapon. If it's mapped to any of the face button (say X), but if I press X, i'll Jump. laugh.gif is there a trigger button?
Will go experiment further tonight.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

The shortcut hotkeys are activated by holding down ^/8(refer to your numpad) on your d-pad or analog(depending on which controls you're using).
A small 4 boxed up icon will appear above your head and showing which icon you've set it to, press it and it'll activate it on the spot.

And somehow I'm still not used to that shortcut, I should though as mentioned it tends to get very hectic at times.
For now I tend to put them very close to each other so I can scroll through easily.

As for player list, I think it's better if you guys created a Google Docs for it.
Seems much easier where we can just add in our own details rather than asking the TS to always do the job of adding it in all the time.

i haven't played elf, but maybe its because another skill u have under the same category needs to be raised.

lvl 85 now and my amazon is starting to show huge amount of dps increase with maxed war paint + +atk potion + anti-knocback potion...
bosses goes down quickly if they're on the ground. XD

few more sidequests to go...

Thanks! Yup found that out while experimenting earlier. Holding the UP button on the d-pad is the trigger then can swap to any of the mapped equipment or items etc..
For now, still early in the game so not so hectic. But i'll prob utilize it further down the road..!

That shortcut is good for spells & potions.

As a Sorceress, I can cast spells like Protection or Blizzard easily without having to scroll around for my spells. It's very useful in boss fights.

What about dwarf? hmm.gif

I'm currently using a sorc now, a lot of flexibility but the mana depletion irks me in the middle of a firefight sweat.gif

Dwarfs has crap Anti-Airs.
But if you compare it with Amazon, there are plenty of skills in her skill tree allows her to get crazy amount of DPS in a short period of time.

That's what I've read from GameFAQs since most of them are mentioning that Amazon has the highest DPS in the game after thoroughly testing every class until very high lvl or so.

I have both PS3 and PSV copy now, am using my US PSNID written below if you wanna add me.
Oh, do add in a small message mentioning who you are else I'll just ignore it. sweat.gif

Also, I've finally decided to unlock Inferno last night.
Didn't know it was easier than I thought, went solo against that fella tongue.gif

Bro u using both R1 copies or different region? Am wondering if cross saves will work between regions as I can foresee DLC will be coming for this.

EDIT : Found out that people tested it and work.

Hunted the Famitsu DX pack. Steep price but this makes it all worthwhile whistling.gif

Okay, another n00b question.. why are there two values for weapons damage? like 4 - 16 etc.
A bit keliru when I want to equip a weapon and there are 2 values to consider.. sweat.gif

This one quite common in rpg. the left one is minimum damage whereas the right one indicates max damage

Ok I search for it already since no one pretty much confirms this.

For those who intend to play with both PS3 & Vita versions, you don't have to get the same region. The saves will be compatible irrespective of regions (though the source didn't specify R3 it should apply the same).

Only thing I'm wondering now and yet to be proven is will the DLC be region-lock or not and how it applies between both systems. (the current Add-On in the Asia PS-Store is only for Asian versions)

Yes... and no...

With Max skills: Thor hammer (execute twice in a row!), frenzy, the skill increases bare fists attack, the fire enchanted skill and fire damage increase (try with firebomb or pick one up from an enemy and see)...
He can just do insane amount of damage too... especially against bosses that are weak to fire...

Well, wizard can also deal ridiculously high damage in a short time too...

It's very situational many time, for some offensive characters...
an example, the Golem boss, lets do with no equipment bonus and same base damage.
See how many hit Amazon takes to deal the same damage output a single bomb tossed by Dwarf (remember there are plenty of bombs which takes about 1s to throw another at his disposal for max skill and those goblins drop more powerful bombs too)... smile.gif

hehe, Don't forget, amazon can't take hit like dwarf... so dwarf can consistently stay put to out perform Amazon in tight situation (although I know Amazon has this cheap Immortal skill... but maxing it means you sacrifice other offensive skills... and that parry skill requires timing and parry-able to certain attacks)!
But basically, Vanillaware does it quite balance among classes compared to games of similar genre...

My Sorceress jumped 15 levels last night after beating the AD with TenSou's help. Is it just me or levelling up with hard mode is easy?

10% vs 50% of exp conversion from score... that's a huge difference and that dragon gives so much of score, let alone always reward 9 pieces of S rank equipment... I guess?
