I am not sure if Wii U is better than 3DS for you. That one you have to decide.
But we can discuss la base on your preference.

How many hours do you have time to play daily?
What type of games are you interested in?
More additional info needed, so we can know which one is better for you.

If you plan on local multiplayer Wii U is the best when it comes to that. Can even say it's better than PS4/Xbone as well
All the Wii U titles are really good and well polished, you can't go wrong with any of the Nintendo first party games. They are just awesome for me.
If you don't mind in the number of game libraries the Wii U have, then go for it

3DS has a lot of libraries of games but if you wanna play some games with your wife it's not gonna be good Get a Wii U
Both 3DS and Wii U are really good and choosing any of them wouldn't be bad in anyway IMO.

The amount of hours I ask was because if you are super hardcore, there might not be enough games for you on the Wii U. But I could say that Mario Kart 8, and soon the come Smash Bros. will keep you occupied for a long time. Games like Wii Sports Club, Nintendoland, Wii Fit U is gonna be awesome for your family. As well as local multiplayer like Super Mario 3D World, Mario Bros., MK8 and Smash. Wii U would fit the family picture well. But if you gaming alone 3DS is also good with huge libraries to consider.

Good good. Any choice is good anyway so you can't go wrong.

Those who owns a Wii U mostly doesn't really care that much about 3rd party games though. Because I know most who owns it, usually owns more than 1 console. A PC combo or with a 3DS or PS4 or Vita. Yes 3rd party support are atm to worse i've ever seen. But first party already a lot of games to enjoy, I think it will be fine. Bayonetta 2 exclusive for Wii U because Nintendo help them fund the game. Well I think it helps some get a Wii U. I know some people are gonna get a Wii U because of B2 I'd wait until next year when all the E3 games is release, I think 3rd party support will be a bit strong when all the games comes out.

Most of the games aren't on splitscreen, you play with just one screen with multiple user on it, it's pretty fun really, games like Nintendoland, Mario 3D World, Bros U and Wii U Sports Club, play local multiplater with just one screen. It's really great, and don't forget you can also sometimes play certain games with the gamepad, so there is 2 screens. Also the gamepad provides a different gameplay on gamepad for example on the Bros U and 3D World, those who use the gamepad has something extra, to help those with the normal controllers, whether it's pro controller or wii mote. Pretty awesome, you have to try yourself to believe it Yes you can play Wii games, the thing I like about Wii U is also backwards compatible, I never bought a Wii before, so there are tons of titles to enjoy. Some of the games are really cheap now, while some are quite expensive though, but the libraries is huge, plenty of games to have fun on. I'm sad that most doesn't own a Wii U yet, it's awesome.

If no longer hardcore ok la get a Wii U. Too many games to play this days, no enough time to play them all. So I don't think there will be enough games.

Hard to find Wii U only without bundle nowadays. Not sure if any seller does sell it.
Most only sell with bundle, either mario one or the zelda wind waker hd. Lucky might still find Mario Kart bundle.

If you haven't played any previous Wii games before then you can play on it as well.
I have tons of games to play, and have quite a number of backlogs. Virtual Console is awesome and I can smell Anime Crossing for Wii U soon already

Once Hyrule Warriors is out and then Smash, i'll be turning it on again for good.
Taking a break on Mario Kart 8 right now. Too much racing. Now off to PS4 for some Destiny haha.

How did I not know about Digital Deluxe Promotion on Wii U? Lol

This only applies to Digital Deluxe Wii U owners and not the Basic Set owners.
All points will be counted for Wii U games only. I bet some or most doesn't know about this.

I import most of them from Amazon, it's very rare and hard to find. Some Wii games I buy from Kyo.
Wii remotes, if you want it cheap can try hunt for Wii Party U bundle, it includes a remote and the game, quite cheap.

I have quite a lot of Wii games collection myself and most of them are new but rare ones got it used.

They small stuff that you can do on the gamepad is good enough for me.

Pro Controller don't have that. But for some games without the screen thing, i'll use pro controller.
