Hello everyone! Erm, I have a few questions here, which I don't really know where to post it but since its related to Japan..perhaps some of you had the experience.

1. Will be going to Japan this end of year + New Year, might attend a New Year concert (depends on my friends). So is the train working till late at night so it'll be safe to know that we'll be able to go back to where we stay ? (I'm staying in a apartment actually, figured its cheaper then hotels especially during the peak seasons in Tokyo)

2. I have a Blackberry under Maxis plan, and I need contact my friends in Japan, or check twitter or facebook every now and then, but it seems like Maxis roaming is expensive ?? Not sure whether I should rent a phone there just to use it to tweet and FB-msg my friends, or go ahead with the roaming. OR rent a portable Wi-Fi, but I don't use it 24/7, kinna wasted no? Any good tips on this ??

3. 1st Jan, I know its New Years Day, so more of the popular temples will be packed, but how packed is packed? 1 hour wait maximum?? And is there anything to do around Tokyo on 1st Jan, like most neigbourhood food house is closed on this day right?

Will be staying at Nishi-Ogikubo...anyone knows hows this place??

So excited to go Japan again, this time bringing my parents who can't speak Japanese language, so I want to know they'll be safe somewhere when I'm off to meet up with my friends myself. haha (sorry for having so many questions. =X )

How pack is the Pack?
Ok...I tell you this...whole Malaysia Population including Sarawak + Sabah was 28m. In Tokyo (Only Tokyo) already 13.8m population

I went to Shanghai on August only.....The Population on Shanghai was 23m.  Almost whole Malaysian people live under one City.  During Peak Time going work the crown was so pack until you breath also sesak.

New Year....almost all Japanese people will go temple for wish better luck......13m population city......all whent out home shopping / gathering / praying.  one word....crazy

Shanghai train Station [the people square] & Tokyo Shibuya // Shinjuku Station i found one similar thing.....Even not in Train....On station walking also feel like sardin already......hahhaa

fuuuuuuu~ rclxub.gif And I read on their tourism board or something that says Tokyo is quite empty during New Year's period because most people travel back to their hometown. rclxub.gif

Thanks for your help..but well, still need to go to the temple on 1st Jan. sweat.gif Just hope I don't get stuck there for too long in the line coz I need to rush off somewhere before 17:00.

Re: New Year's Day questions.

1) Temples night on the eve are crowded but not packed. Trains will be running. Must see as e.g. Zojoji as they release lanterns, pound omochi and ring the bells 108 times etc. Most people will be at home watching TV (there are a few popular shows like Kouhaku etc) or at a party, not at a temple.

2) New Year's day will be packed - mostly the shrines, not temples. Japanese go to shrines ("jinja" i.e. Shinto) on New Year's Day. While packed, still manageable - a must-see.

3) You'll find eating options round the clock UNLESS you're staying in a predominantly business area e.g. Shiodome. Those places - most restaurants shut a few days before and after New Year's as no office workers will be around.  On normal days, they close early as well around 9-ish. There's always the convenience store ("combini") or late-night donburi (beef bowl) fastfood.

4) Department/supermarkets stores don't usually close at 10. 8-9 more like it. Most will be closed on New Year's Day. Day after, they will start selling "mystery" grab bags called "fukubukuro" - you'll get some good deals but you won't know what's in the bag.

5) Winter will get you some of the clearest weather around - you can see Mt Fuji on some days from Tokyo. You will be able to see sunset and sunrise - news on TV will broadcast those times on weather forecast.

6) Don't forget to go to the Imperial palace on day after New Year's day - it opens only 2x a year. You'll get to see right-wingers shout banzai banzai when the Enperor appears. There's always a couple of them around.

Good luck! Will you be entering Japan on a long term social visit visa based on marriage?

Oh great!! Thank you for your help !! I really appreciated it. And yes, by temples I meant Jingu (eg. Meiji Jingu..)

Nope, stay at Nishi-Ogikubo. =)

And I was hoping to go to a few jingus, like Meiji Jingu, and Tokyo Jingu to get their eto ema (coz its the Dragon year) for keep-sake. haha
What worries me most are my parents who can't speak Japanese language and might be hard for them to find a place to eat or something on New Year's Day, but I guess it'll be alright from what you said.

Might be thinking of going to the Imperial Palace on the 3rd or something..coz my friends plan to go Disneyland on the 2nd already.

Looking forward to spending my New Year's Day there! Thank You for all of your help. biggrin.gif

You're right. I was there last 2 years during new year. Surprisingly, Japan's NY eve celebration is not as happening as KL. It was pretty empty at midnight! I did went out on 1st Jan and it wasn't THAT crowded. You'll be fine.

2 more weeks to go!!!!  drool.gif Sayonara Malaysia!

Anyone using BlackBerry or bringing their BlackBerry to Japan ? I need advices on whether to use it or rent a phone from Japan.

Maxis data roaming is so expensive, so it would be good idea to rent a smartphone from softbank at the airport right?

And the Tokyo Train apps...I didn't know there's an app for that !! Need to download it ! =P
