I thought N8 coming in July has this Anna?

I read the front has Gorilla glass. What about the glass protecting the camera lens at the rear?

From what I read, they only ship Symbian Anna in July so I will likely hold off my purchase until then because Anna seems to address some serious shortcoming in text input and web browser real time scrolling.

BTW, what's the street price for the N8 for original set with warranty?

I am also waiting to see N9's photo and from these early shot, it seems they are just as good as N8 for distance shot but seems to lose out in macro shot.

Do they give you extra memory card?

I found the listed price beginning of the month was RM1690 and street price about RM1300. But this week, I notice the list price has been reduced to RM1360.

Do you see this N9's photo as good as N8? i don't think so even though I don't have N8. May be N8 owner can concur?

Hi. One more question. Can you input BOTH English and Chinese character onto the same screen? With my E series, you can't. It's either all English or all Chinese input.

Hi, I just ordered a new N8 to replace my ageing N82.

Is it recommended to use some kind of screen protector and casing for the N8?
*
So did you sell your N82 and for how much?

If not and if it's not worth much money, then it just prove my point and that is, I never bother with casing and screen protection because those things just get in the way of enjoyment. So may as well make the most out of it.

Of course, if you intend to resell your phone after 6 months or so, then better give it some protection. My 2 sen.

May I ask, without enabling AGPS, how long does the N8 takes to lock onto satellite from a cold start?

Depending on location. It can be 3mins up to forever if there is obstruction at that area.
*
This is no better then the older E Series. OTOH, I have seen Samsung S and iPad being able to lock within seconds with AGPS. Is Nokia still so bad or did the Samsung/ipad played some trick?

you wanna know the time for agps enabled or disabled? you asked for nokia agps disabled locking time and then you compare with samsung/ipad locking with agps??
*
My mistake in previous post. I am asking about lock time for Integrated GSP (without AGPS)

All without AGPS....
E Series takes a few minutes
Samsung Galaxy & iPad takes seconds
Now you say N8 also takes a few minutes.

I saw all those with my own eyes so was wondering why such big difference.

the reason why some takes a few seconds and some takes longer might be due to the previous location. lets say, if the last location you use your gps was in kl. and then now you're in penang and you use it, it'll take considerably longer to lock your position simply because it needs longer time to locate you. however if you continue using in kl, then it'll be faster. other factors such as weather and surroundings such as buildings will also affect locking time. but nokia has improved a lot in their gps system. now even can use wifi to lock your position. smile.gif
*
I am quite familiar with GPS and all those last position memory, cold start, warm start, concrete building, clouds, car tint etc. Even with standalone Garmin (2yrs old unit) and from a total cold start (new country first time use), it also takes a few minutes.

Yet when I did comparison, all units were side-by-side-same-time, move to new location in town, and AGSP-disabled so that removes variables like location, building, cloud cover and what have you. And yet those newer Samsung and iPad seems to lock within seconds and this is the part I don't understand. So I thought, may be my E series is old tech and the N8 may be better but apparently not. Hence my asking.

I just tested cold start without simcard got a lock in less than 2mins

No bad but still far less impressive from what I saw on the other units. How about move to new location and see u can repeat that? Would be interested to know the outcome. Thks

actually if ur main function is GPS... might as well get a sole gadget GPS device rather than mobile phone GPS... coz it's rather battery consuming...
*
I don't fancy going traveling with one pocket with handphone and another with bulky standalone GPS unit (I doubt it will even fit into the pocket) when I may or may not even use it. In fact, I don't see anyone doing that.

Also, whenever I reach a new place, I like to take a photo with GPS coordinate and I don't think the standalone have a good enough camera.

So handphone with good camera & GPS is the most logical choice.

For car use, it will be when I rent a car in a new town so can always carry a in-car charger to handle the battery issue.

How can u compare like that? Best camera and u complaint its gps slow compare to other device. The other device combine together also caqnt take photo as sharp as the N8 le sifu
*
I disagree.

If other phones GPS also take 2 minutes, I have no problem with that. But if some only take seconds whereas N8 takes minutes, don't you start to question why?

As for photos. Well, while N8 may be better, I also see some other phones doing OK as well. In fact, if not for the free everything GPS of Nokia, I might consider an Andriod like the Samsung Galaxy S or S2 or even iPhone instead.

BTW, it is still hard to believe any phone without AGPS can lock in mere seconds but that was what I saw, hence my asking what's going on?

that depending on the hardware what going on is until today nokia do not have a 1ghz phone in market. Still running 680mhz. I dont complaint because i understand nothing is perfect. If i am rushing i pay for a-gps
*
My AGPS is always on when I am in Malaysia. But not everywhere in Malaysia you got Telco coverage so non-AGPS time is useful. And also when overseas.

So you suggesting the slower N8 lock time is due to the processor speed?

Dont like that say later godlike sifu come and use machine gun shoot me le. From what i understand it could be the gps chip itself. I not gps sifu u wait godlike sifu come clarify this better.
*
Yes, my guess is more likely due to GPS chips or location of the chip in phone or antenna design and less to do with processor speed like you suggested earlier. But not sure, hence my asking question.

Either way, if other phone can lock faster, why not the supposedly top-of-the-line N8?

As for accuracy, my E series can sometimes get the position wrong by as much as 30 meters when GPS is supposedly within 10 meter but to be fair, it's usually in the concrete jungle. Imagine my surprise when I found the Samsung being far more accurate when compared side by side. I was hoping the newer N8 will be better than the older E series.

Hoping the latest OVI Maps 3.06 will be better and also able to search using coordinates on-the-fly.

Seems better than the E Series. If you move locations, say 1 kilometer away, will it still takes that long or shorter time to lock? I suppose your OVI maps is 3.04 and not the latest 3.06? One thing I hope they have fixed is the search by coordinate on-the-fly.

er.... about the GPS on N8.. from my own exp, i never use A-GPS as Im on prepaid. Sometimes, The GPS with Ovi or Garmin i can lock my positon within few seconds, but sumtimes, 5 minutes more, so.... my 2 cents la. GPS lock speed depend on area gua...
*
If you achieve a lock, exit GPS and relauch GPS, it will take mere seconds because it still have memory of last satelite location. I think this is called Warm start.

Instead, switch off GPS. Move to a new location some distance away and try again. If you move to a new country, takes even longer to lock. This is Cold start or very Cold start LOL.
