Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard

Main Contenders:
Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
Alternative Contenders:
Logitect Internet Pro Desktop
Samsung SDK3500 PS/2 Keyboard

My impression:
Awesome box art, box is nicely sealed with printed stickers on both ends. After removing the outer box, inside revealed a very nicely printed and textured hard box. Upon lifting the cover, the keyboard is covered by a transparent plastic with Disney Tron printed on it. The keyboard itself is tightly held by plastic stickers(no pictures there sad.gif already removed when testing it). The keyboard itself has no extra buttons for macro and stuff like that. However, it does have a FN key for additional function on F1/F2/F3/F5/F6/F7/F8/F11/F12 & Pause, functions are Mute / VolDown / VolUp / PlayPause / Stop / SkipBackward / SkipForward / KeyboardLight / Sleep / Shutdown respectively. On the top side of the keyboard, there are mic out and speaker out too, both 3.5mm jacks. With the Tron lights on, these jacks will be brightly lit like some sort of mini flash lights laugh.gif After using for a few days, find my typing now is much better without much error(100wpm / 5 error). The rear/bottom side of the keyboard has hive texture(photo below), similar with the texture on sides of the keyboard. The top side of the keyboard is sleekly painted with piano paint, rest assured this kind of paint is hard to get scratched. Unlike other keyboards, this one is more squarish than you can think compared to the others. The spacebar is placed slightly downwards so it may take some getting used to.

MAIN CONTENDERS

Aesthetic:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★★★ Looks great, lotsa bling with sleek black piano paint.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★☆ Looks great except the two overlarge knobs for adjusting the volume and backlight.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★★ Looks great, awesome ergonomic design but no bling.
Built quality:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★★★ I don't think piano paint can come off that easy, hard to scratch; easy to clean but easily jungled with fingerprints and dust as well.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★☆ Button skins are peeling off just 1 month of using, W key to be exact.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★☆ Excellent finishing on the keyboard itself but when I receive the item, some part were loose and I had to press them back into position. Not a problem since.
Typing:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★☆☆ Too slippery and key distance is far. On the Microsoft SideWinder X6 I placed a pen from the beginning of Q, the tip ended at almost the end of I. However, on the Razer Tron Keyboard, it ended at half of U. Average 500 characters per minute / 100 words per minute with minor error.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★☆ Key distance is moderately far but brushed, concave surface. Average 500 characters per minute / 100 words per minute with very minor error.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★★ Key distance is very short. Average 500 characters per minute / 100 words per minute without error.
Gaming:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★★☆ Keys are sleek with flat surface, bad traction control for people with long fingernails like me, too much slipping.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★★ Keys have brushed and concave surface, better traction for people with long fingernails like me.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★☆ Keyboard is very compact, finger travel distance between keys is the least amongst all contender. However, due to the fact that Esc key, F1 to F12 keys are touch sensitive, it sucked to me because of my sweaty palms. So another user without sweaty palm may rate this differently.
Functionality:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★☆☆ Custom key mapping to all keys but lack unlimited programme specific function, have to run as Admin to work properly. Boast removable numpad. A bridge/connector with a magnet is provided attach the keyboard with the numpad, firm connection; however, if you try to lift the keyboard whilst the numpad is connected it will most definitely fall apart and is something I wont attempt.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★☆☆ Unlimited programme specific custom key mappings with lotsa functions, Microsoft driver after all but volume knob is still buggy, works but not all the time. Boast removable numpad. Either sides on the keyboard and numpad have 2 magnets, firm connection; however, if you try to lift the keyboard whilst the numpad is connected it will most definitely fall apart and is something I wont attempt.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★☆ Shares the same driver with SideWinder X6 but lacks touchpad and lotsa utility keys which really do come in handy. 100% wireless with moderate coverage. Lack numpad.
Packaging:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★★★ Best presented, box looks expensive and the keyboard is firmly secured with plastic ties. Anti scratch plastic was sticker all over the keyboard to prevent scratched on the sleek surface.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★☆ Lacks awesome presentation, looks too formal than entertainment keyboard. Keyboard is firmly secured in cardboard box.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★☆ Packaging wasn't firm enough, looks battered after postage by Poslaju however the keyboard is firmly secured in the cardboard box.
Cable length:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
    ★★★★☆ 2 metres only.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★★ Longer than Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★★ No cable, Bluetooth transceiver that works for all Bluetooth device with Broadcom driver installed.
Driver software:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★☆☆ Able to map all keys on keyboard to different functions but no programme specific settings.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★☆ Programme specific settings but not all keys on keyboard.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★☆ Programme specific settings but not all keys on keyboard.
Anti-Ghosting:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
    ★★★★☆ 6KRO. QWEASD pressed.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
    ★★★★☆ 6KRO. QWEASD pressed.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
    ★★★☆☆ 6KRO. If test with QWEASD 4KRO.
Pricing:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★☆☆ Bought at RM460 but there's cheaper option but I can't wait for the delivery so I grabbed it in LYP. Very expensive, the price would be more justified at RM390 or similar figure.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★★ Bought at RM250, one of the cheapest gaming keyboard with backlight, I guess. And, of course, the removable numpad which justifies the price even more.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★☆ Retailed at near RM500 but I got it new from a fellow LYN member at only RM330 with postage. However, I rated 4 stars with the RM500 price tag as package includes a Wireless Bluetooth mouse to work together with the given Bluetooth transceiver. Also includes a Energizer rechargeable battery for the mouse, with charger.
Overall:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★★★★★★☆☆ One star taken off for the steep price at ~MYR460; another for the long key distance. I prefer minimal hands movement when I use my keyboard and mouse, lazy I guess.
  2. Microsoft SideWinder X6 Keyboard
★★★★★★★☆☆☆ One star taken off for the coating peeling off just after 1 month of usage and another for the ugly knobs; one more for partially working volume knob.
  3. Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000
★★★★★★★★☆☆ One star taken off for the touch/soft keys not registering my sweaty fingers correctly and another off for not having a numpad.

ADDITIONAL CONTENDERS

Built quality:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★★★ I don't think piano paint can come off that easy, hard to scratch; easy to clean but easily jungled with fingerprints and dust as well.
  2. Logitect Internet Pro Desktop
★★★★☆ Alphabet printing started to peel off after 3 months of usage, all keys.
  3. Samsung PS/2 SDK3500 Keyboard
★★★★★ Excellent, after almost 6-8 years still working perfectly as my backup keyboard. All alphabet printing still intact.
Typing:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★☆☆ Too slippery and key distance is far.
  2. Logitect Internet Pro Desktop
★★★★☆ Very bad feedback, worse amongst the three.
  3. Samsung PS/2 SDK3500 Keyboard
★★★★★ Excellent feedback but moderate far key distance.
Pricing:
  1. Razer Tron Gaming Keyboard
★★★☆☆ Bought at RM460 but there's cheaper option but I can't wait for the delivery so I grabbed it in LYP. Very expensive, the price would be more justified at RM390 or similar figure.
  2. Logitect Internet Pro Desktop
★★★★☆ RM100++, 4 stars because bundled with a mouse. For the built quality I'd rather go for even cheaper mouse and keyboard bought separately.
  3. Samsung PS/2 SDK3500 Keyboard
★★★★★ If my memory serves me right, definitely cost less than RM40. Excellent quality at that price.

OMG, this keyboard is beautiful. You should review the mouse too. It also looks damn cool.

Can the backlit be adjusted?
*

Sadly the brightness cannot be adjusted but the lights at the sides can be turned off separately from the keyboard keys.

oh and I didn't grabbed the mouse. Don't like the design lol.

Love the lighting. Is it mechanical?
*

nope, not a mechanical keyboard. Mechanical keyboard for me sounds great when they are clicked but that's all it is for me. As a typist, I must say it is all personal preference.

using the sidewinder x6 for almost half a year. the paint on the keys are still intact ( prolly because my nails are short and most of the time in aircond room, so not much sweat).
whereas, you can try to lift the keyboard while the numpad is still attached. it will stay on firm, tried it.
*

lol, just tried on both the Tron and SideWinder X6. Proven both stays after lifting it. laugh.gif

Pretty good review but you missed out some keypoints.
1. The Sidewinder X6 has smaller keys compared to other keyboards which needs some getting used to.
2. While the finishing on the Sidewinder X6 is not the best, it still lasted me more than a year without any chipping on the keycaps. Don't type with long fingernails.
3. I personally think that the volume and brightness knobs on the X6 gave it a rugged look that I really like. However, with the installation of the keyboard driver, it became too sluggish to use.
4. Anti ghosting feature on the X6 is bad so I won't recommend it for any rhythm gaming.

However, the X6 is a great keyboard to type on and in my opinion can only be bested by mechanical keyboards.

Thanks for the input notworthy.gif
