Added on May 30, 2011, 4:00 pmI can share some infor i heard from the HR
- 15% EPF contribution
- 1 Free astro worth RM200 + 2nd & 3rd account worth RM 200 at RM 50.
- Performance bonus (No more contractual bonuses)
- RM 70 food allowance. If you working in bukit jalil, as coupon, if other branch, credited to bank with salary
- Medical coverages.

Basic salary they offered me was 60 bux more than my current company. Overall, it was lesser than what I'm earning at current place inclusive of allowances i'm receiving here. Their HR team must be too smart to consider offering it. Waste of time! Hence it was only wise to tell them "THANK YOU FOR YOUR OFFER BUT NO THANKS" tongue.gif

imo, free astro or not is not important. if you have to work 24/7, barely have time to watch even an hour drama. it does not bring much different right?

1- director in any company is never easy to become, even a chinaman company director you could also have the luxury of company car and various hidden benefit
2- never believe too much in what others parents say about how much their children earn, most of the time its exaggerated icon_idea.gif

Can easily see from his achievements all his life also la.

Now he's GM in Microsoft. Do you think Microsoft is easy to get in to be a GM? He's in his mid 40's so he has a long history of good work experiences already behind him.

Even if his mom exaggerated and we discounted -30% of the reported amount (of his monthly salary), it is still a lot MNCs' middle management's annual pay.

in astro, i heard all depends on which department you join. if you happen to be bad luck join a department with bad boss, then your live will be bad. if your boss is good, then you will enjoy the live there. overall the benefit is good.

Have been approached to go for interview at a new joint venture between Astro and South Korea's GS Home Shopping, called Astro GS Shop Sdn Bhd (AGSSB).
Does anyone have any info regarding this new company? Will the benefits for this new company be the same as Astro?

Anyone ever worked in IT department?

A friend of mine who was ex employee there said no wlb, everyday stay late until midnight, and weekend also need to come.

If based on the projects deadline/bug issues which probably happens only sometimes in a while, thats fine. Just need to make sure its not consistently like that.

I have a friend whom I supposed to join together on that day. She's working as a tester, automation one I think. She said, its pretty good. Well ada life la she said, also not so stress some more. The manager and seniors also seems nice and friendly, since I met them in the interview, which lasted about 2 hours.

I am an ex-astrolite. Benefits wise, i can say its quite good.

15%-16% epf contribution from astro (2 years ago, not sure now)
Free astro (1st account), 2nd and 3rd account will be rm50, deducted from salary if u decide to take. All channels except astro best, astro first and some other channels.
Meal allowance of rm70
Annual leaves 22 days, mc 60 days
Outpatient treatment covers spouse and kids
Hospitalization also covers spouse and kids
Flexible benefits (accumulated points can be converted into cash i.e. to buy handphone can claim back provided u have enough points)
Performance bonus depends on the company's performance of course. I've got mine 3 months bonus for 2 consecutive years. This year i dont think they're doing good.

Environment wise is also good. More to Gen Y environment especially in Astro Radio. Food in cafe is also good. Always have events. Celebrities coming in and out. People are generally good but if you're in Sales department, be prepared. They have sky high expectation. Overall, i like the company and the people i worked with. But because of some idiot that i cant stand, i decided to go.

Go ahead and join if you've got the offer. Trust me, u will learn a lot, including the office politics and drama.

mana2 pon sama the politics part. I worked in HSBC, PayPal and now in government based organization. Everywhere the same. you just need to know how much to set your expectations/hopes. dont always be optimistic, some pessimism is a must.

my friend in astro is happy no prob etc, currently almost 6 months since she joined Astro.

In my opinion, yes its all worth it. When I joined, my salary was so much lower. After a while, my boss decided to revise my salary as the workload worth more than what I earned. Workload was crazy, i broke down into tears because too many things on my plate, i came back to work 3 days after I got married, I was doing office work during my maternity leaves and a lot more. It does sound crazy right? For me, if can survive in Astro, i can survive anywhere. You get to see many things in Astro. Lots of different characters. Like their tag "macam-macam ada"

I quit because I was exhausted and the lack of leadership, was some of the push factor. After all, everybody deserves a break after working their a$$ off.

If any of you got an offer, just go for it. Go in, learn and leave. If you want to stay there forever also can. Lols.

true, politics is everywhere
but astro is politics + cowboy style
no proper process flow, no proper paperwork and SOP, have to bow down to whomever of higher pangkat or bigger fists

if u got the chance to talk with ex-PM from there, u ll get "interesting" stories

over there if ur rank is Associate or Snr Associate, ur life is still good, u get to escape a lot of stupid politics and dramas, for AVP and above is a different game altogether.

overall, astro is still a good place to earn steady income, i suggest whoever going in, just clock in and out on time, no need to chase for the ever changing KPI, no need to "go beyond", although u will kiss the bonus and career path goodbye, but you can spend the after office hour for some part time such as insurance agents or Uber, the side income will still be more than ur bonuses

Left Astro for Oil and Gas since 2013.
Though short working experience at Astro ( < 6 months), the surrounding and environment is pretty challenging.
As some say, office politics are always there, above average benefits, celebrities are ins and outs and for me, its a positive working place to be at.

Amanda Lim,

Did you end up with ASTRO GS Shop? If yes, can share how's the working environment especially the colleagues? I got call by ASTRO headhunter TOO. But contemplating whether to join.

Is it a good company to join? Anyone please feel free to feedback.

Have been approached to go for interview at a new joint venture between Astro and South Korea's GS Home Shopping, called Astro GS Shop Sdn Bhd (AGSSB).
Does anyone have any info regarding this new company? Will the benefits for this new company be the same as Astro?

Thanks!

Cha202,

Mind me asking in which division you are working in?
I got an offer but I am now contemplating if I should join because it is a totally new environment for me. I am not sure how's the environment, workload, expectations and office politics in ASTRO? Yes package wise is good about 20% more than my current. Is it worth a try? If I am young, I would because I am sure there are a lot to learn but problem is I am already mid 30s...should I take this risk 😔

I already done my interview with them, got a call on 26th DEC stating that they want to proceed with hiring and request me to do some online hiring assessment while they get in touch with my referral.

Almost 2 weeks have past, didn't hear anything from them, not sure whether this is normal or not.

Any latest updates from Astro current or ex-staff?

I got an invite for interview session. But reading the general vibe in this thread is not that convincing, and I'd rather not waste time.

Hello everyone,

I just signed up after finding this forum & thread to be the most uptodate with what goes on while working at Astro. Thanks for the resource !
After reading reviews on Glassdoor and Indeed I still seem to be unable to understand what's going on with my current (?) candidature with Astro.

A headhunter contacted me to see whether I was interested in a certain position with Astro.
I accepted and was interviewed in early April 2018. The interview lasted almost 1.5hrs and was only one stage directly with the hiring manager. This was for a SAVP role. Unfortunately I cannot disclose what department that is for.
I was asked to record a "selfie video" introducing myself just for profiling reasons: apparently it's an Astro formality they have.

One day later the headhunter tells me Astro has already decided to make me an offer.
Over the next week I provide my references, fill in forms etc. for Astro to process a background check. Few weeks later I am advised by the headhunter that the background check came out good to go and that HR will now need to get budget approval from management.

Date of this writing is 27 June 2018. I haven't yet received the promised offer and the headhunter says that their requests/followup to the HR in Astro remain unanswered or ignored (not sure if truth).

Are you guys aware of Astro taking like 3+ months to issue a formal job offer?
This is absurd and really frustrating! Are there any current Astro employees in this forum who might shed a light?

Thanks a lot for any insight!

You mentioned about budget approval from management as the last known stage. This one varies. Normally in large corporations, approvals come in batches as it’s not easy to get top management time. This is especially when the organization have a major event to organize, under restructuring or it’s just simply the approver is not around (due to travel).

Based on public news, Astro just change its CEO and there are possible merger talks with Maxis. So that may explain the delay.

3 months is quite normal for large corporations in addition of being a middle management role. Have you negotiated on salary? If not, there is still that stage left. If yes, maybe you are 2nd / 3rd choice and the silence or delay is in case the first choice rejected their offer and come to you next.

That's a great reply, thanks.
So you're saying to hang in there.

I haven't even seen what salary we're talking about here as I haven't seen their offer yet.
As such, I haven't even reached the negotiation stage. How long do you think negotiations can drag on for ?

According to the fact that they have clearly told me (almost 3months ago now) that I would be receiving an offer , I'm led to think that I'm not a 2nd or 3rd choice otherwise I bet they wouldn't trouble themselves to have me do all the background checks and tell me about budget approvals ongoing etc.

Just my .02$.

Normally they will ask how much you want for salary? Very rare they offer first without tentatively asking unless your asking price is lower than their expectation. Normally they will try to negotiate downward (part of their KPI). This negotiation normally happens over phone as the offer letter is not easy to prepare (it needs the HR head approval in some cases).

Alternatively, they may run in budget issues as some HR has overriding power to reject candidates even after hiring manager ok due to myriad of reasons. For example, your asking price may be too much? Or you are supposed to join a new department and they felt such department is no longer necessary?

It’s normal to have at least 2 to 3 candidates on the back-up line in case the first choice reject. Imagine the hassle they have to go through again if that happens. The small inconvenience is nothing compared to revisiting the process.

Anyway, if you don’t’ have another offer, just wait it out. Hope yours are really just process hiccups.

Nothing.

As I mentioned in my first post, this role was brokered to me via a well known headhunter agency.
After following up yet again with the agent 1 week ago, I have received no reply yet from either agent or employer.

Really makes me wonder. bangwall.gif

I have been chasing the agent ever since the background check came out clean and they told me I would be extended an offer.
Frankly I'm starting to lose hope.

May I ask you whether your position is also a middle management role or lower/higher?
If same or higher I wish you good luck, if lower then there is a chance it may take less time to reach a conclusion.

Hahaha strengthen your mental guys. I got my offer after 3 months! The position I went for it Software Quality Assurance in IT dept. 3 weeks are nothing.

I accepted their offer but a week letter I got another offer and I accepted the latter one. The manager was furious though. But, I already given up in those 3 months time so its their fault for making it so long.

Anyway, those are 3 years ago hahahaa. Also went through headhunter route.

Thanks.

They told you they'd be extending you an offer and then you waited, right?
I'm officially in my 4th month of wait now.

Care to share what was the process like when you received the offer?
Did they send it to the headhunter and then they forwarded it to you? Did you accept it first and then reject?
Or did you go along with negotiations and rejected it later?

Not really, I am only been in contact with the headhunter all the time, and I mostly communicate through whatsapp after the 3months period. They kept on telling me they are preparing the documents, getting higher ups approval, etc. After the 3rd month I didnt really wait anymore, but every 2 weeks I kept on checking on the status haha.

They send the offer via email, through the headhunter also. Before they sent me the email they called and try to confirm the salary, allowances etc. I asked for higher salary of course because they offered lower that my expectation.

2 weeks later the offer came in, I verbally accept it though. havent signed anything yet. then come hari raya puasa, i went back kampung for 1 week holiday. I was supposedly reporting in on Monday after hari raya~ on Wednesday prior that, a call came in, with another job offer that let me stayed in my kampung forever hahaha >> so i immediately accepted it, went and signed the agreement on Thursday. Friday I emailed the headhunter rejecting the offer. They never replied until the next week telling me the manager was furious hahahaah.

** in case you were wondering, the offer was good and all but I got an offer from government agency on that Wednesday thats why I was willing to turn down the offer even though it was last minute decision.

It's 1st Aug today and no news at all.

At this point I have honestly given up hope as it's been 4 months. I don't think 4 months silence has been heard before.

the real issue here is the complete radio silence from both astro's HR AND the headhunters who source people from them!

For those vying to get into Astro, be aware that the company is currently facing a tough period in business since a while ago (vs OTT, video hosting, piracy, digital content) which means a restructuring is always in mind, especially since the previous CEO, Datuk Rohana has left (new CEOs tend to announce big moves to improve bottom line, and cost-cutting/retrenchment is a low hanging fruit), despite being a cash-cow in the Malaysian market.

A point to consider, not here to deter you guys or fear mongering.

Just heard back from agents.

They said ASTRO froze all candidatures for the moment, as a consequence of the management change.
We'll see what happens now to all of us stuck in the limbo...

Guess we just got in at a bad timing.

Update:
Apparently this particular agency has been ghosted by Astro.
They don't want to pay their fees or something after the change of management so all candidates who had gotten verbal offers previously were dropped. And they can't bypass them and hire them directly because otherwise they would still owe fees to the agency for the introduction.

I noticed they use a workday platform now so they will focus on hiring directly rather than using agents. oh well, that was really unfortunate.

Good luck to everybody who got in via direct recruitment !

It's a mid-management position.
You basically report to your division's equivalent of C-suite staff.
you usually get people reporting to your role in companies as big as astro.

i don't think any specific benefits. just mid-management level of salary and "prestige" of the role being 1 step below C-suite. That's all.

Why you ask ?

SAVP reports to VP

benefit wise Astro do provides quite lucrative allowance for SAVP and above, but still no room and no company car

Kick those overpaid and replaced with lower paid but similar skill employees. Now with higher level of competition, it makes sense to mark the remuneration to market. Organization like banks do it all the time.

Does make sense.

Astro may be looking into payTV for internet streaming services like Netflix.

Therefore, they may want to tap into Maxis's vast infrastructure.

That’s good to hear. Do you mind sharing AVP for which department?

AVP position should be at least 5 figures. Depends on department also perhaps.

How long is the typical background check for Associate position? (2 years exp prior to applying) and what is the pay like usually?

Based on experience usually depends on the company hired. But 2 weeks should be max as per experience (correct me if i am wrong)
