Get from lee yung more safe. I saw an aquarium shop near my place selling marimo balls at RM 30 each. But then, when I tried to handle it, it's actually moss glued to a ping pong ball. WTH scammer. mad.gif

Thanks for trusting me bro. Btw just wondering how to glue moss on ping pong ball, but I saw some kind of Java Moss Ball, it is actually Java ikat in ball shape, nothing special, one day it will become balless too tongue.gif

*
The one I saw is java moss, tied with black color net thing. Then the net glued to the ping pong ball. Only thing nice bout it is that it floats 24/7.

Are those marbles or water absorbing crystal jelly? I tried the jelly thing. But somehow it shrunk after like a few weeks in water. =_= I got no idea why. They turn back into their original size now. Maybe they can just absorb then need keep apart from water? Being in water too long somehow spoils them? o.O???

Shrimps eats pellets. You can get them in most aqua stores. Shrimp pellets that will sink to the bottom of the tank (normal fish pellets dont work). In normal case, when algae starts to grow in your tank and you have plenty of java moss, you don't even have to feed them. But if you consider that they might eat your marimo, (which most shrimps won't cause marimo is tougher) then just continue feed it pellets.

If you plan to keep shrimps, NEVER over feed them. they like water that is stable and clean. If you overfeed, it will end up in a mess since bacteria starts to rot around. Changing water is not a good idea since you PH meter will rise or drop too much and create stress thus killing the shrimps. Shrimps are fun and REAL pretty to keep. But you need to do a lot homework for it as well. =P Try cherry shrimps. One of the most easy and cheap shrimps to begin with.

No need an oxygen tank for them shrimps right? smile.gif

Thanks for the tip!!

You do need oxygen tank. A very good filter. Lights. A cooler, or a fan. You can consider this an expensive pet if you do wanna keep them.

1. Full tank cycle. Along with your moss and decorations. (Set up a tank and leave the filter running for minimum 1 week. Better if a month.)
2. Make sure the PH is stable. Get a PH kit to understand how to use it.
3. Make sure it's 26C below. Cool it down with chiller or fan.
4. Make sure you have lights, better yet, self timer that turns on 8 hours a day.
5. Drift woods that is cleaned. For the shrimps to hide so they wont get stressed.
6. Best not to put any fishes inside it.
7. Finally put like 5~8 shrimps inside to test.

p/s : everything above is just roughly how it is. Better you go and check out shrimp forums.

Haha I used to rare alot of fish, you noe flowerhorn that crazy times. Big medium small tank also got. But now I prefer something cute and small like a cookie jar! smile.gif

Sorry bro. I understand it's cool to have a pet in a cookie jar. But unless it's plants, no pet can live happily in that. Sad case. Or maybe insects? That might work out. Even a guppy get stressed in a cookie jar. =(

And LeeYung. Sure I'm around bro. Still loving my marimo. I've been real busy taking care of my plants included tons of herbs like sage, lavender, mint, balm, stevia, marimo, and my pet cats and budgie. And also my job =_=''. Too busy.

Nah...not really. I just like exotic stuff. And frankly, everything I learned is from forums. Google teaches you basically everything. Except herbs. Since they don't teach you how to grow a 4 season plant in a tropical land. But I've got a nice friend teaching me all I needed. thumbup.gif So I don't mind sharing what I know since I understand it's really crap when nobody is helping you.

Greetings,

interested to knw how to make a marimo tank and a planted tank with fish?

i just put myself into this aqua world, and i have less knowledge bout it. My tank has a hanging filter with carbon n spounge. i keep zebra daino, guppy and neon tectra.

please advise.

First of all. Never too many fishes. Example 3ft x 2ft x 2ft suits to have like 15~20 guppies around. It might look too empty for you but the guppies will feel cramped. (same goes for other fishes at that size)
Then the same old stuff all over again.
1. Get a full cycle for your tank. (means set everything ready except fishes and let the filter run for 1 week or more.)
2. Make sure your filter have ceramic rings, bio balls, etc. You can get them in a set. Then make sure your filter minimum have 3 layers.
a) Layer 1, thin sponge. This layer you will change it every 2~6 months or so depending How large your tank is.
b) Layer 2, thick sponge. Never change this layer. Leave it for years. Time will wear it out and it gets thinner, if so, add another later. (thats like a year or 2)
c) Your ceramic rings and stuff. Never change this layer either. Clean them with hot water before adding into your filter. Of course excluded bio balls in that hot water part.
3. Lights, best get 8 hours of lights daily. Best get timer for it.
4. Remember, either you put a filter under your sand. Or you vacuum it every 2 weeks or so. The filter is just some planks with holes/pores/gaps with it. And comes with a pump to blow up those pesky poop up and goes back into your main filter. So that the poop does not sit in the bottom of the tank and rot.
5. Get temperature below 27c. Do it with fan, cooler, chiller, whatever. But above 22c.
6. Guppies love mates. You need add a few female with them. Problem is, the will breed like mad if they are in good condition.
7. Guppies love exotic food! Your plant snails is awesome snack! And snails do breed like mad too. Hench free food.
8. Depending of what type of 'plants' you mean. Moss are the easiest. Java, blablaba. Not much a challenge in taking care of them. Meanwhile, others can screw you up big time. You need to spend tons on them. Like my fav, hair grass. So give them up if you dont plan to spend big bucks.

Above are only minimum and roughly how the whole thing is. Google for more lol.

If i just keep guppies and tectras, and of course marimos in it, do i need to have the light?
How go get those temperatures? what u mean by fan, cooler chiller? Where to get it? any pic or place i can refer to?
Do i need to keep snails if my tank is only 40cm(length), 30cm(height) and 28cm (width)? Guppies will eat snails?

please advise~![/color]

Well, if that's the way you want. You still need lights. Your guppies and neons wont look pretty without them =P Just be reminded not to get fluorescent lights. It will kill your marimo.
Fan/cooler/chiller you can buy from most aqua shops. I just use fan, cause it's cheaper. Problem with the fan is, water dries out quickly. So I have to prepare a bucket of de-chlorine water all the time.

Your tank is very small. Maybe you can skip the fan part. Since you said you got a hang filter, I assume that it water creates a waterfall like thing and falls back into the tank? If it's so, skip the fan, just put it in somewhere thats not too hot. I dont think you can have much fishes in there. Around 15 probably since I assume you already had too much.

Those snails I mentioned usually comes with those plants you buy. And eventually they will breed like mad since some of them are both male and female or can breed just by themselves (what you call those again? I forgot) You need to squish them (killing them by breaking their shells) and throw them back into the tank. But thats just side options. If you dont have them, forget it. Your guppies cant kill living snails.

If you still want to give them treats, prepare a to get risk, not suitable for beginners. Get a hard boil egg, take out the yolk. Mix the yolk in water 1/1~1/2 part. Put it in the freezer. Then eat whats remain of the egg yourself. After a day, take out the yolk, take tiny bits and drop it into the tank. And watch the guppies go into a frenzy. Problem is, if you guppies didn't finish it cleanly, and they start to rot in your tank, it's gonna be hell. It will stink the rotten egg stink. And you need to redo all the steps all over again starting from a tanks full cycle.

Hey guys, just bought some marimo for my bf smile.gif

Anyway ytd we bought a tank from Pet Wonderland, Midvalley and it came together with a hanging filter and a lamp (Aqua Zonic or something). I asked the person whether it is regular white light or UV and she seemed clueless so I'm afraid to turn it on now in case the marimos K.O..

How can I distinguish normal white lamp to sun lamp? >.<

The bulb says 7watts & that its suitable for aquatic plants & reef, which means its daylight bulb (UV)? The tank is 20x30x17 cm, is it too hot, etc?

Normal white light should mean warm/cool white light right? So does this mean i can just replace the bulb with something low light, etc?
*
Yeah, most sellers are totally clueless about these stuff. They only know how to say their things is good and sell you. Damn the plant nursery near my hose cant tell the difference between organic and inorganic fertilizers. They say 'ohh this one same! just color more pretty! just use this one, can also!'. Stupid people =_=
Usually UV lights will state it have UV. You cant tell the difference with naked eye. A friend told me to test with anything glowing on a black background. Stuff like glow in the dark toys. UV will make it glow, while normal like wont. (not sure if it really works)
