Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested his players could be banned from using Twitter.

The micro-blogging website is used by United players including Wayne Rooney, who was involved in an incident with a follower on Tuesday.

While Ferguson, 69, said he did not understand Twitter, he said the club are looking at the possible "issues attached" to using the website.

"I don't know why anybody can be bothered with that stuff," he said.

"How do you find the time to do that? There are a million things you can do in your life without that.

"Get yourself down to the library and read a book. Seriously. It is a waste of time.

"It seems to have a certain momentum at the moment. Everyone seems to want to do it."

Defender Rio Ferdinand is a prolific Tweeter, Michael Owen and Nani are regular users while Rooney recently joined the growing number of footballers with a large following after signing up last month.

The striker told one user "I'll put u asleep within 10 seconds" when he replied to an abusive tweet before dismissing his words as "banter".

However, a trio of footballers have been reprimanded by the Football Association for inappropriate comments made on their profiles.

West Ham players Carlton Cole and Danny Gabbidon have both fined and warned about their future conduct, along with former Liverpool striker Ryan Babel.

And Ferguson said his players must take greater responsibility, especially when conducting themselves off the pitch.

"They are responsible for their actions," he said of his players.

"We as a club are looking at it [Twitter] because there can be issues attached to it. And we don't want that."

And the Scot dismissed the suggestion that Twitter brings the players closer to the supporters.

"It would be better if they did it on the pitch," added Ferguson.

Wayne Rooney has told Sir Alex Ferguson he is desperate to stay in form by playing against Blackpool.

The Manchester United manager has hinted he may rest some of his established players for Sunday's final Premier League game with the title already secured.

United face Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final in a little over a week's time and Ferguson is keen to keep his big names fresh.

Rooney, however, has no desire to rest and would like to maintain his momentum by being in a winning team at Old Trafford on Sunday against the relegation-threatened Seasiders.

"It's down to the manager to pick what team he wants to play in the two matches," he said.

"But I'm sure all the players want to play. You play football to play in these games and I hope I can play on Sunday. You want to keep ticking over."

United will be presented with the Premier League trophy after the game and having missed out on the crown last term, a rejuvenated Rooney is eager to clasp his hands on it once again.

"Lifting the trophy is a great feeling. It is great to look back on and is something to show your kids when they are older."

Former England skipper Rio Ferdinand has defended Ferguson's right to utilise his full 25-man squad as he sees fit.

The centre-back is aware his club could face action from the Football Association if they are deemed to have fielded a weaken team which could be in breach of rule E20, which stipulates that clubs must field their strongest available line up.

Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "Why have a 25-man squad if you're hammered for utilising it? Don't make sense... when we changed eight or nine players earlier in the season (and won) I didn't hear the call for docking points."

He later added: "Who was moaning when we changed all of our team versus Schalke in the [Champions League] semi-final (and won)? What is the point of having a deep squad if it is wrong to use them all?"
