Italy: Belgium friendly booked
Friday 14 March, 2008 Italy have planned a pre-Euro 2008 friendly match with Belgium on May 30 in Florence. The Azzurri have reportedly only set up one test ahead of the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland. That will be against Belgium at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, but a kick-off time has not yet been finalised. The Belgians have not qualified for the tournament and will take on World Cup holders Italy on Friday May 30. There is also set to be a friendly with Spain on Wednesday March 26, but these two tests appear to be the only chances Roberto Donadoni will have to experiment with his squad http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/mar14r.html |

Italy: Don deal delayed until July
Thursday 20 March, 2008 Azzurri Coach Roberto Donadoni will have to wait until July to pen a new deal with the Italian Football Federation. The former Livorno boss had been expected to receive an extension to his current contract, which expires two weeks after Euro 2008, prior to the summer's adventure in Austria and Switzerland. Despite the assurances of FIGC President Giancarlo Abete that Don is the man to lead Italy in the future, no formal agreement has materialised and it won't for another four months. "The base of the relationship between the Federation and Donadoni is the united aim to honour the prestigious tradition of the national side at Euro 2008," a statement read. "President Abete wants to reiterate that there is faith and a relationship of mutual respect on a personal and professional level, which goes beyond contractual issues. "We will discuss a new deal when the current one expires in July." There have been suggestions that the FIGC won't stick with Donadoni if he fails to reach the semi-finals of the European Championships. Rumours circulated that there would be a rescission clause activated after Euro 2008 should the world champions fail to reach the final four, but it now appears that the FIGC have taken a more transparent approach. http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/mar20l.html |

Italy: Borriello to face Spain
Saturday 22 March, 2008 Roberto Donadoni has named his Italy squad to face Spain with Marco Borriello, but Alessandro Del Piero, Antonio Cassano and Alberto Gilardino are out. This is one of only two planned warm-up friendlies ahead of Euro 2008 and will take place in Spain on Wednesday night. Gigi Buffon and Mauro Camoranesi are recalled after missing recent games with injury, while Capocannoniere Borriello of Genoa receives his second call. However, it now looks extremely unlikely that Del Piero, Cassano or Gilardino will have a chance of breaking into the squad for the summer tournament in Austria and Switzerland. The Azzurri will unite at the Stadio Meazza in Milan on Monday afternoon and fly out to Alicante on Tuesday for the match, which kicks off at the Luis Valero stadium in Elche at 21.00 UK time. The other friendly will be on May 30 at the Stadio Franchi in Florence against Belgium. Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), Amelia (Livorno) Defenders: Barzagli (Palermo), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Grosso (Lyon), Materazzi (Inter), Panucci (Roma), Oddo (Milan), Zambrotta (Barcelona) Midfielders: Ambrosini (Milan), Aquilani (Roma), Camoranesi (Juventus), De Rossi (Roma), Gattuso (Milan), Perrotta (Roma), Pirlo (Milan) Forwards: Borriello (Genoa), Di Natale (Udinese), Iaquinta (Juventus), Quagliarella (Udinese), Toni (Bayern Munich). http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/mar22l.html |

Gattuso bored by Don talk
Monday 24 March, 2008 Italy's Gennaro Gattuso has admitted that he's found the Roberto Donadoni contract saga all rather unsavoury. The Italian Football Federation and the national Coach have been trying to reach a compromise over an extension ever since the Azzurri qualified for Euro 2008. The situation has understandably received widespread coverage and the Milan man isn't too happy about it. "The longer it goes on, the more uglier it is getting - it's not nice to hear things about Donadoni's contract on a daily basis," the World Cup winner told Sky Italia. "However, as the Coach has already demonstrated, he is someone who likes to work hard and get his team working just as hard. "All I can say is that he should look to the future and not think about his contract. He just needs to focus on the team and I'm certain that a new deal will follow." Donadoni signed a two-year contract in 2006 just days after Marcello Lippi resigned following Germany 2006 glory. The FIGC want to hand him a new deal, but are keen to include a rescission clause which would annul terms if Italy flopped at Euro 2008. It's now expected that the Federation and the former Milan winger will postpone contract talks until after the Swiss and Austrian Finals. http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/mar24m.html |

Materazzi with Italy at the Meazza
Monday, 24 March 2008 20:39:52 MILAN - Marco Materazzi and the Italian national team trained at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Sunday afternoon ahead of their midweek international friendly against Spain. Toni eyes Euro glory
Tuesday 25 March, 2008 As Italy prepare to face Spain on Wednesday evening, Azzurri hitman Luca Toni sets his sights on glory at this summer's European Championships. Roberto Donadoni's men have the weight of expectations on their shoulders as they look to add the European title to World Cup 2006 and become the greatest Italian side of all-time. However, the draw wasn't kind to the Azzurri and they have to negotiate France, Romania and Holland in their Group. "It's natural that we are amongst the favourites," Toni explained. "This is a special season for me and one of my objectives is Euro 2008. "But it will be a very difficult Group - for me it is the "Group of Death" - and then we will probably have to take on Spain. "We will go to the European Championships with the same target as usual - to win. We are world champions and that gives us an even greater obligation to go for victory." As for the former Fiorentina man's personal targets, he remains characteristically modest. "I just want to be part of the squad and to do that I want to carry on playing well at Bayern Munich," Toni insisted. "I don't consider myself a world star and perhaps I arrived late in the world of calcio, but I have two trophies that can't be attributed to fortune - the Golden Boot in 2006 with 31 Serie A goals and the World Cup where I played and scored." Toni concluded by discussing the friendly rivalry with Bayern teammates Willy Sagnol and Franck Ribery, who will be representing France in Austria and Switzerland. "Willy joked about how lucky we were in the World Cup Final, but nothing can change the fact that we won the trophy," he said. "Whether they like it or not, we are the champions of the world." http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/mar25a.html |

European Under-21 Championship qualifier - 25/3/08 (17.00 UK)
Azerbaijan 0 - 2 Italy G Rossi 18, pen 63 (I) Republic Stadium, Baku Giuseppe Rossi bagged a brace as Italy's Under-21 side return from Azerbaijan with a 2-0 victory. The former Manchester United and Parma starlet netted twice in the Republic Stadium in Baku to confirm their leadership in qualifying Group 1 for the 2009 European Championships with seven wins and a draw. Rossi wanted a penalty in the opening three minutes, but the referee waved play on. Empoli hero Sebastian Giovinco was as lively as ever, earning free kicks all over the field. His corner found a Robert Acquafresca header that had to be cleared off the line early on, while Consigli was careful to beat away an Amirguliyev strike. Rossi broke the deadlock after 18 minutes when he ran on to Giovinco's searching pass and smashed a left-foot finish past Umarov. Acquafresca was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet after several chances, including a follow-up to Marco Motta's saved effort that was disallowed for an offside position. The Cagliari striker went off with a bruised right ankle in the second half. Rossi and Daniel Pablo Osvaldo went close before goalkeeper Umarov brought down Giovinco, allowing Rossi to convert the penalty. Azerbaijan did not give in and Dashdemirov just failed to connect with a Javarov cross as he came sliding in and Javarov's shot was tipped over the bar by Consigli. Motta threatened a third for Italy, his finish deflected out for a corner, while the local goalkeeper just about managed to keep out a cheeky Giovinco lob from midfield. Claudio Marchisio and Giovinco could have made it 3-0 in stoppages on the counter, but the Empoli forward was cut short by a cynical Abishov foul. Azerbaijan U21: Umarov; Medvedev, N Mammadov, Abishov, Abdullayev; A Mammadov (Magivel 81), Novruzov (Nadirov 58); Dashdemirov (Amiraslonov 77), Amirguliyev, E Mammadov; Javadov Italy U21: Consigli; Motta, Marzoratti, Bocchetti, De Ceglie; Dessena (Morosini 64), Cigarini, Marchisio; Giovinco, G Rossi (Pisano 69); Acquafresca (Osvaldo 54) Ref: Radovanovic (Mne) http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_ita...u21aze-ita.html |

International friendly - March 26, 2008
Spain 1 - 0 Italy Villa 78 (S) Elche Mauro Camoranesi hit the bar and Luca Toni's goal was controversially disallowed, but Italy fell 1-0 in Spain to a stunning David Villa volley. It is their first defeat since a 3-1 friendly in Hungary on August 22, 2007. This was one of only two international friendlies that the Azzurri have prepared ahead of Euro 2008 and Roberto Donadoni seems to have chosen his 23-man squad. Marco Materazzi started in central defence despite poor form, while Mauro Camoranesi returned from injury to support Luca Toni in the habitual 4-2-3-1 system. Spain left Raul at home, but had Liverpool hitman Fernando Torres fit again. They were unbeaten in 13 games, which included 11 wins. It was extremely windy in Elche and Xavi flashed a weak effort across the face of goal, but Iker Casillas had to come flying out to clear off the feet of Antonio Di Natale. Italy hit the back of the net with Toni on 13 minutes, but it was disallowed. He got his glancing header to an Andrea Pirlo free kick from the left channel, but the referee blew the whistle for a dubious Fabio Cannavaro push at the back post. Casillas got down quickly to beat a Pirlo cross away from Toni's feet. Spain lost Carles Puyol to injury early on, making way for Albiol, but they passed the ball around well and Xavi drilled past the near post from the edge of the area. Marco Materazzi was sent off at Anfield in the Champions League for two fouls on Torres and he was booked here too for tripping the pacey Liverpool player. From that free kick Senna curled well over. Casillas was almost caught out by a Di Natale lob from distance and Senna blasted over from 30 metres. Toni opted to head a Di Natale cross towards Simone Perrotta rather than go for glory and it was intercepted. Torres dispossessed Pirlo on the edge of the box, but Cannavaro smartly blocked his path. There was chaos on 37 minutes and Spain should have scored, but Gigi Buffon parried both a Torres effort and Cesc Fabregas follow-up from point-blank range. Carlos Marchena prodded a Fabio Grosso cross out of Toni's path at the back post and on the counter Christian Panucci held off Silva at the byeline. In first half stoppages Arsenal star Fabregas unleashed a sudden daisy-cutter from 25 metres, forcing Buffon into a fantastic fingertip save at full stretch. Roberto Donadoni made three changes at the break, introducing Andrea Barzagli, Gennaro Gattuso and Marco Borriello for Materazzi, Pirlo and Toni. David Villa replaced Torres. It livened them up and Italy went closer than anyone to an opener on 51 minutes when Grosso's cross found a splendid left-foot Camoranesi volley that smashed against the underside of the crossbar. On the rebound Borriello's effort was charged down. Villa was booked for simulation on Barzagli, then Borriello held the ball up for another Camoranesi shot. Daniele De Rossi's free kick found Roma teammate Panucci at the back post to nod over. Alberto Aquilani came on for Perrotta, but a Sergio Ramos cross flashed across the entire face of goal with nobody from either team able to get a touch. Italy lost the ball on the edge of their own area, but Buffon did brilliantly to parry a fierce Fabregas shot from point-blank range. Barcelona full-back Gianluca Zambrotta took over from Panucci on the right channel. Gennaro Gattuso was fortunate not to give away a penalty for his clumsy challenge on Luis Garcia, but the referee was very close by and waved play on. Vincenzo Iaquinta replaced former Udinese teammate Di Natale and took on his wide left position. Camoranesi dribbled through the Spanish defence and was clear on goal, forcing an unorthodox save out of Casillas. However, Spain took the lead with a goal out of nowhere. Villa unleashed a rocket of a left-foot volley from the edge of the box on Cannavaro's weak clearance that flew under the bar, leaving Buffon with no chance. It was a fantastic finish. Xabi Alonso's searching crossfield pass found Villa and Buffon smothered his chance for a brace. Italy had chances to equalise, but Borriello was charged down. http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_ita...ly/spa-ita.html |

Matrix gets newspaper apology
Thursday 3 April, 2008 Azzurri defender Marco Materazzi has received a full apology from The Daily Star newspaper for accusations made after the World Cup 2006 Final. The Inter stopper will attend London's High Court to hear an apology read out for unproven reports printed in the aftermath of Zinedine Zidane's dismissal during Italy's triumph in Berlin. The Daily Star claimed that the Matrix provoked Zidane's attack by racially abusing the gifted midfielder, calling him "the son of a terrorist whore." "I really appreciate the apology published in The Daily Star," a statement from Materazzi read. "The truth is now coming out - finally. I am looking forward to a quick and positive conclusion to my claims against the other newspapers that published lies about me. Only then will I be truly satisfied." Materazzi's lawyer, Steven Heffer of Collyer Bristow explained the terms of the settlement. "There will be a High Court hearing on Monday when The Daily Star will publicly apologise to Materazzi," he explained. "They have already done so in the newspaper. The Daily Star now accepts that the allegations are wholly untrue and there is no question of Materazzi having said anything of a racist nature to Zidane. "The Daily Star will now also be paying my client substantial damages and his legal costs." http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/apr3k.html |

Donadoni: I've done my duty
Thursday 3 April, 2008 Roberto Donadoni insists he is "satisfied" with what he has done in these two years as Italy boss ahead of the Euro 2008 test. "I am satisfied with what has been done in these two years. I know full well what the difference is in Italy between coming first and second," said the Coach on Sky Italia. "I know I have done nothing but my duty with this group of extraordinary players and I am happy to have trained them. I'm convinced they'll give me many more joyous moments from now until the end of the European Championships." Yet there is strong talk - fuelled by the Federation's contract offer - that Donadoni will be axed if he does not at least reach the semi-finals. "I am entirely honest, I never expected anything and just tried to carry on my work. Clearly the fact a contract renewal has been offered to you means there is respect and confidence in your abilities, but I have never asked for anything and I am amazed that today we are still talking about it. "We go forward and continue to work. For me the objective is the European Championship." The Azzurri boss rejected the contract renewal, reportedly because it included a clause declaring it void if he failed to reach the final four in Austria and Switzerland this summer. They are in a very difficult group with Holland, France and Romania, but Donadoni has almost decided on his squad for the tournament. He has faced increasing pressure from all sides to call the likes of Antonio Cassano, Alessandro Del Piero and Giuseppe Rossi, but Italian football has a growing roster of talented forwards. "I would like the media to help me in this sense, because the fact they tell me there are six strikers who are very talented is enormously pleasing, but they must also say who to leave behind," joked the tactician. "Marco Borriello is having an extraordinary campaign and I expect him and the others to continue. Del Piero knows my thoughts and the way I decide on my squad, as he is one of the players I have spoken to the most. He needs to continue doing well and then we'll see. "As for Rossi, I take into consideration all the youngsters who impress in Pierluigi Casiraghi's Under-21 side. "It is impossible not to love Cassano, but he knows he has an important responsibility as a professional and a great player. He also knows what he has done penalised him a great deal. That doesn't mean he can't get back on track, but clearly it has created problems." http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/apr3d.html |

Ambro fights Del Piero corner
Thursday 10 April, 2008 Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini has backed Alessandro Del Piero for a place in Roberto Donadoni's Euro 2008 squad. Donadoni will be asked to submit his final squad for the trip to Austria and Switzerland in a month's time and Del Piero could miss out. Having been left out for recent friendlies against Spain and Portugal, the Juventus captain may be denied a glorious international swansong, but Ambrosini believes he should be chosen. "He is a great man and a great player," he told Tuttosport. "He has the strength, the humility and the demonstration to show his value when he has been criticised. "He has shown ferocious willpower to confirm that he is still a true champion and I really hope to see him run out for Italy. "Besides, he is my favourite table-tennis opponent because I always beat him!" Del Piero also received a vote of confidence from Panini, who included Pinturricchio in their Euro 2008 sticker album. http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/apr10e.html |

Pippo keeps Azzurri faith
Monday 28 April, 2008 Pippo Inzaghi is on sensational form for Milan and admits that he is dreaming of a place in Roberto Donadoni’s Euro 2008 squad. The 34-year-old has been lethal since returning from injury and has found the net eight times in the last four games after yesterday’s hat-trick against Livorno. Competition for places in Austria and Switzerland is fierce and Donadoni has a wealth of striking options, but Inzaghi is still in with a chance of a seat on the plane, despite his injury-plagued year. “It was a very important game and I am happy for the win as well as the three goals I scored,” Inzaghi declared. “I’m on incredible form personally and it’s hard to believe because I thought it would be tough. “I must continue to do my part if I am to make it to Euro 2008. I’m available if I am needed, but if not I will stay at home without any quibbling. “At the moment I am calm and just looking to keep going forward like this. It is a fantastic time and it is great to be playing here. “Kaka, Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf are such amazing players and keep setting me up in front of goal. http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/apr28a.html |

What I actually told Zidane. - AP http://utusan.com.my/utusan/info.asp?y=200...ra&pg=sl_05.htm |
