btw TS, since ur salary is rm30k/year, better go for Maybankard2 (AMEX + MC/Visa).

the AMEX card give 5x points plus 5% cashback on weekend (max rm50/month).

the 5x points is equal to ± 2.3% cashback ~
to redeem rm50 voucher, std is 11,000 points. and to get 11,000 points u only need to swipe rm2,200.
in other words, swipe rm2,200 and u can get rm50 voucher already.
also got rm50 voucher that can be redeemed as low as 9,300 points.

better than hlb essentials 1%?

as i mentioned above, even u use amex on weekdays, still equal to 2.3%

for place not accepting amex, yes hlb essential is good.
