Yes they are upgradeable provided the BIOS support it, and the power supply is sufficient.
But I've found modded BIOS for M17x R2 if I am not mistaken, at Tech Inferno forum, whereby with this BIOS
there is no more restriction on what card could be installed.

The easiest way to see this is to compare what console are available on that time.
For example, right now we have XBOX360, and as long as XBOX360 is still in the market, then most probably
you can play most games on high, until next gen of console is arrived, it is expected next gen console from Microsoft
will be released on 2013. This is the time where most graphics engine got updated to a new level, as many games currently
are ported from console. But, with the specs of current high end GPU, I would say it will last longer.

Just to give you a better picture of how powerful single HD6970 is compared to desktop counterpart.
HD6970M is almost on par with dual HD5870M,
while single HD5870M is almost as good as HD5770 desktop version, so single HD6970M is almost on par with dual HD5770 desktop version. That's a lot of power already for me.

Regarding the animation designing, you're going to get more software/driver optimization by using Quadro GPU (Nvidia) or AMD Firegl, which is build exclusively for stuff like that.
But for me, if you already have dual or single HD6970M, everything will be smooth for you, in fact HD6970M already can handle all games at max currently.
Of course for future proof, HD6970M crossfire will have more advantage, its benchmark is almost as high as GTX570 desktop.

Haha I knew that bro, but they are more towards synthetic benchmarks (vantage,3dmark11.etc),
the things that I would like to see is the real gaming benchmarks, without OC will be much better.(how many average FPS in games etc.)
but thanks anyway.
