Earlier we have the link to Visa's own exchange rate website. Is this the correct exchange rate website for MasterCard: https://www.mastercard.com/global/currencyc...sion/index.html ?

So in doing this calculation for service fee is it best to use the respective credit card websites? If Visa card use Visa website and so on?

I just posted an article on my Maybank Visa Infinite transactions mentioned above.

And based on Visa rate, the MBB's Overseas Admin Fee is like 1.25%  shakehead.gif  Click below link to read more.
Yeah, I was quite surprised by your figures. What happened to the supposed 0.5% service fee?

Ok, I have analyzed some of my transactions from Dec 2011 and tabulated it in Excel. The result:

MBB MasterCard Gold, USD to MYR
Note: transaction date is taken from the statement. Actual rate is from dividing USD/MYR from the statement.

Attached Image

My observations:

1. The rates quoted from different sources can vary quite a bit. So when comparing as posted by different forumers here it is important to be consistent with the source quote.

2. The Visa rate is consistently higher than the MasterCard rate. In particular on some days (21, 22 and 23 Dec) it is a lot higher.

3. The MasterCard rate is the lowest, even compared to XE and Yahoo.

4. The surcharge for MasterCard in my case is consistently 1.03%. Again what happened to the 0.5% as mentioned by MBB?

Thanks for the info. One thing for sure is that Alliance MC rate is lower than Alliance Visa.

I wonder if MBB MC is lower than MBB Visa or not? I think on your blog last time you compared before and it was nearly the same right?

I was trying to search online for the terms and conditions for forex related to MBB cards. Didn't see the Malaysian one, but I found the one in Singapore, which says:
QUOTE

Card Transactions in Foreign Currencies

Card Transactions in foreign currencies other than US Dollars will be converted into US Dollars before being converted into Singapore Dollars. Card Transactions in US Dollars shall be converted to Singapore Dollars on the date of conversion. All conversions are subject to such exchange rate at such time as may be determined by the respective card association(s), namely Visa International Service Association and/or MasterCard International Incorporated at its absolute discretion. The conversion rate applied is based on the Posting Date of the Card Transaction to the Card Account which may be different to the rate in effect on the date of the Card Transaction. The Bank shall charge the Cardmember the converted amount, an administrative fee of 1.5% of the said amount (or such fee as the Bank may determine from time to time), and any charge levied by the card associations. The Bank may charge, credit and debit, as may be appropriate, all sums payable to the Bank under this Agreement to the Card Account.

Interestingly for SG it is based on posting date and the fee is 1.5%.

Oh, then my analysis is wrong already since I based it on transaction date.

BUT, here is the shocking thing, behind my separate MBB VI, it states the following:

"Foreign charges applies a conversion factor of 2.5% to the converted amount and charges that is made in a foreign currency other than US Dollars will be first converted into US Dollars before being converted into Ringgit Malaysia" WTF  vmad.gif  vmad.gif  vmad.gif

No wonder the MBB VI earns us 5X TP overseas.
*
But in practice from your blog post, the fee is only about 1.25% right when you used your MBB VI card?

Exchange should be as of posting date which is when the bank remits the money to the merchant. Thus the term "posted".
*
Here is my table when using the exchange rate on the posting date. Again, the card is a MBB MC so I took the rate from MC's website.

Attached Image

Strangely, the Mastercard website does not provide the rate on weekends so I just put "n/a".

So when using the rate on posting date, the surcharge % fluctuates. Compared to previously when I used the rate as at transaction date the surcharge % was quite consistent.

What kind of OCBC card are you referring to above?

Surprising to see Maybank's rate being higher than OCBC.

I wonder if its because of MC vs Visa. I recall that upon checking their corporate forex site, usually MC is lower than Visa.

Managed to get copies of some of the T&C for Maybank cards:

Maybank 2 Cards

QUOTE
13.3 Where the Cardholder uses the Credit Card outside Malaysia, the
transactions shall be charged in the official currency of the country
concerned and converted into Ringgit Malaysia at such exchange
rate and at such time as it is determined by American Express or
MasterCard / Visa International at its absolute discretion.

13.5 All foreign charges converted by American Express apply a
conversion factor of 2.5% to the converted amount. A charge that
is made in foreign currency other than U.S. Dollars will, when the
conversion is done by American Express, be converted into U.S.
Dollars before being converted in your billing currency.

No mention of the fee for the 2 cards MC or Visa. I'm assuming it is their normal 0.5%.

Maybank Visa Infinite

QUOTE
13.3 Where the Cardmember uses the Credit Card outside Malaysia, the
transactions shall be charged in the official currency of the country
concerned and converted into Ringgit Malaysia at such exchange
rate and at such time as may be determined by Visa International
at its absolute discretion on the date it is processed by Visa International,
depending on the card used. In addition, the Cardmember also has to pay
the administrative costs at a rate of 1% or at other rates will be determined
by Maybank for conversion transactions made in foreign currencies.

I certainly hope it is the 1% smile.gif

Anyway, from your past experience it seems that 1% is the correct figure.

I haven't gotten any 0.5% rate in recent transactions.

Thanks for posting. I read it already on your blog.

Mixed. Have samples for all 3.
Good to know that Visa is consistent across the different types of Visa card. For a moment I was concerned if VI had a worse exchange rate (in order to compensate for the 5x TP).

Executive Summary:
MBB Visa - 1.25% admin charge based on Visa forex rates on posting date
MBB Mastercard - 1% admin charge based on Mastercard global forex rates on transaction date
One comment, I notice that the forex rates quoted by Visa are generally a bit higher than MC. So the real diff between Visa and Master is a little bit higher than 0.25%.

Wanna ask about Maybank Visa bank surcharge %.

From past discussions I recall it was something like 1.25% or 1.5%.

I checked some of my most recent transactions (based on posting date) and discovered the bank surcharge was 2.26%.

Any other Maybank Visa users notice this?

AEON Watami Visa CC
Transaction Date: 22-Feb-2015
Posting Date: 25-Feb-2015
Transaction amount: ¥272,584 JPY
Amount charged: 8452.98 MYR

Visa rate 1 JPY = 0.030895 MYR

Visa rate @ 0% fee = MYR8421.48268

AEON fee = 0.374011574883391%
*
Hi, is your calculation above correct?

I just checked on Visa's website and the JPY exchange rate on 25/2 (posting date) was 0.030649. Using this figure the AEON surcharge is 1.18% not 0.37%.

Oh, I see. I haven't read this thread in a while.

Like that Maybank Visa no longer that attractive for overseas transactions.

Update: I just called Maybank hotline to inquire about what is the admin fee % they charge for foreign transactions. The customer service guy told me 1%. So I told him from my calculation is was 2.26%. So he is going to double check with the relevant dept tomorrow (they are closed now) and call me back. I will update you guys once I hear back from him.

This reminds me of what Miles posted about 18 months ago:

QUOTE(MilesAndMore @ Sep 10 2013, 04:01 PM)
While Maybank claims it is only 1%, we all know that it is more than that. That is why the final exchange rate he got is RM3.3826.
*
If Maybank still claims it is 1% (when the truth is otherwise) we should all write in to officially complain plus also cc copy to Bank Negara.

So I did get a written reply from Maybank. See picture attached above.

The dates in pencil is the posting date for the transactions.

Checking on Visa's website I cannot get the exchange rate used by Maybank (whether using posting date or transaction date). hmm.gif

All oversea online transaction, VI also entitled 5X TP
If the trader is at US, trade with USD......AMEX is the choice

For USD transactions, although both VI and Amex give 5x TP but I thought that Amex has higher transaction fee?

If that's the case then using VI is better right?
