After factoring the 5% rebate for amex weekends + 5X points, is maybank visa or maybank amex better?

correct me if i am wrong, 5% rebate for overseas transactions rebate are based on the posting date so perhaps this is the reason 1-2 August ones are not eligible...

QUOTE
Maybank VISA/MasterCard : 0.5%
Maybank American Express with Maybank logo on top : 0.5% + 2.5%

Let's say I am charging RM3000 equivalent of foreign currency to my card, comparing between AMEX and VISA

Weekends
AMEX: + RM50 (5% max rebate) + RM75 (15000 TP) - RM90 (0.5% + 2.5% service charge) = + RM35
VISA: + RM15 (3000 TP) - RM15 (0.5% service charge) = 0

Weekdays
AMEX: + RM75 (15000 TP) - RM90 (0.5% + 2.5% service charge) = - RM15
VISA: + RM15 (3000 TP) - RM15 (0.5% service charge) = 0

Can I conclude that use AMEX on weekends; use VISA on weekdays?

Assumption: The exchange rate for the same bank is the same, the only diffrence is the service charge. Is this correct?

Added on August 7, 2011, 9:57 pmOn a second thought, it is only worth it to use AMEX as long as it does'nt dip to negative.

Clarification from zenquix:
QUOTE(zenquix @ Aug 8 2011, 04:50 PM)
all foreign transactions - Visa and Amex (and Mastercard) will be converted to USD first before being converted to MYR for settlement.

Also Human Nature's assumption is flawed - Amex and Visa are 2 different companies and may impose different foreign exchange rates (for the same time, same place etc.)

Maybank is only an issuer and will impose charges on top of the exchange rate given by the credit card companies.

Is this correct?

QUOTE
Final amount charged = Amount in foreign currency + Admin rate (imposed by the bank, e.g. 0.5% Maybank visa) + Foreign exchange rate (imposed by visa/mastercard/amex)

Added on September 4, 2011, 6:23 pmIf the above is correct, comparing between Maybank Visa and SCB Plat Business Visa is as follows:

MBB : 0.5% (1x points) - 0.5% (charge) = 0
SCB : 0.5% (cashback) + 1.5% (3x points) - 1% (charge) = 1% ('gain')

In this case, both are Visas hence same forex rate. Am I missing something here?

Not sure, still waiting for expert to guide. I am still not sure if this is correct:

Final amount charged = Amount in foreign currency + Admin rate (imposed by the bank, e.g. 0.5% Maybank visa) + Foreign exchange rate (imposed by visa/mastercard/amex)

Let's say I purchased an item priced at HKD100.00 using MBB Visa.

On 15-Sept-2011, the amount in MYR is:

Real exchange rate is: RM39.68
http://finance.yahoo.com/currency-converte...YR;to=HKD;amt=1

Wawasan Sentosa exchange rate is: RM39.65
http://www.wawasanmoneychanger.com.my/exch...p?currentPage=2

Visa exchange rate is: RM39.589 (visa rate estimator using with a bank foreign transaction fee of 0.5% for MBB Visa)
http://corporate.visa.com/pd/consumer_serv...er_ex_rates.jsp

This means that RM39.589 will appear in my card's statement, which is lower than the rates imposed by Wawasan Sentosa and real case sweat.gif
This is logically not possible, so what am i missing here?

Taking a step further, 1 TP = 0.5%, so after minus the treatpoint equivalent, it's RM39.391.

It's going to be higher than the rate quoted by VISA International, but with Maybankard VISA/MasterCard, the difference won't be much. It will be close to the rate quoted by Wawasan Sentosa.

Which one would you recommend me to use for the following scenario?

Normal item:
Maybank Visa (0.5% bank rate, 1x point)
vs
SCB Business Visa (1% bank rate, 0.5% cashback, 3x points)

Dining:
Maybank Visa (0.5% bank rate, 1x point)
vs
OCBC Ti Mastercard (1% bank rate, 5% cashback)

Thanks

I would not risk using OCBC Ti anymore as few of the cafe I went in Melb (could happen in other places too) does not reg the 5% rebate MCC. If you are 100% sure that it is in 5% category, then go ahead else I would use the Maybank Visa.

But on weekend, using the Amex still gives you more rebate despite the 2.5% charges.

Thank you for the feedback. I notice you used OCBC Ti too and it made me start thinking.

Executive Summary:
MBB Visa - 1.25% admin charge based on Visa forex rates on posting date
MBB Mastercard - 1% admin charge based on Mastercard global forex rates on transaction date
MBB Amex - Close to 2% higher than Visa and Mastercard

Detailed analysis available on my blog. Do comment and highlight errors if any.

yeah, money changers in Melaka was selling ~3.145

add: maybank visa fee is between 1.0 to 1.5% now, not 0.5% anymore. I wonder if other banks are having the same increase too.
