QUOTE(arcana75 @ Nov 12 2007, 04:47 PM)
All IMHO.

1. I would say EVE is not for the casual player, BUT is a game for ppl with a working lifestyle with genuine RL matters to attend, eg family, job, etc. I say this because EVE is an indepth game with many things to grasp and understand. EVE does not allow one to simply pick up and drop like say an FPS or a console game. If you have say only 10 hours a week to play games, then yes, EVE can suit u. But if you don't have the time nor stomach to read up and think of things like calculating damage per second, understanding your enemy's capabilities, learning things like resistance tanking, damage types, etc, then your casualness will impact your overall gameplay experience.

2. Like the others have mentioned here, hardcore players spend more time in the game therefore grind more money and learn the ropes alot faster. Casual mode ie a few hours a week, you have alot less money and generally take alot longer to keep pace with hardcore players in terms of what grinding can get you. Many many many things will remain out of your wallet's reach for a long long long time.

3. While EVE sports a time-based skill development system, unlike others like WoW or LotRO where u need to kill and kill to level up a skill or character level, it's not really the entire picture. What time-based skill means is this: for example to fly a ship (hypothetical), you need say level 3 of that skill to fly the ship:

Level 1: Takes 30minutes to train.
Level 2: Takes 3 hrs to train.
Level 3: Takes 14 hrs to train.

What this means is that in 17hrs and 30mins real time, your character will learn Level 3 of that skill. However, because there is no skill queueing, you have to login to change skills after completing Level 1 and Level 2. If you're a working chap on Casual mode without the luxury of logging in whenever you feel like, you're gonna have to put off training this skill until later or train another (longer) skill until u can.

So even if EVE is a time-based system, someone who can be online alot longer and more often will reach Level 3 of that skill alot earlier than you, which again reinforces the Hardcore/Casual dichotomy.

As for playing for "free", EVE allows gamers with some ingame cash to exchange it for real game time. It is possible to be a casual gamer and be able to afford a 90 day pass in 5-6 months' casual gametime, but as with all things, YMMV.

The best thing you can do is download the EVE demo and get a 14-day trial key and give it a shot.

The best part about EVE for me is the broad spectrum of activities a player can do ingame, both to suit hardcore and casual play styles. There's trade, manufacturing, research, PvE combat, pirating, realm vs realm (called null-security combat or nulsec) battles and much much more. As a casual EVE'er (only about 10 hrs per week, straddling other PC games, a job and a family), some of these activities completely suit me, but not all.

i think ur point 1 falls into the hardcore catergory ler...i have never even bother calculating dps in my entire eve life yet tongue.gif
point 2 if u join a player corp many things can be overcome .. n yes ur personal wallet will be low but then can tag along corpie lvl4 ahahahah
point 3 aiya casual player lose time if cannot login in change skills no big deal ler he casual n dont think its right comparing hardcore to casual in this case
but i totally agree with the last part ..got many things to do in eve...casual or hardcore all got their part n place in eve n err realm vs realm lol tongue.gif

eve is where u r in a ship n in ship got a capsule/pod.....u can get pop ie lose ship in combat whereby u get ejected into space in ur pod....now if u was pvp n cant run fast enuff in ur pod ur enemy can pod u...die loh...so its call pop n podded. it is worthwhile to note if u get pop in pve the npc rats will NOT pod u.

ok now this is the interesting bit .. if u get pop ie lose ship then ur ship which had modules in them (bit like fitting ur character with all kinds of armour/weapon/etc in other mmorpg games) u have a good chance of them getting destroyed but also a small chance of them not getting destroyed which means u can go n collect them. in pve u can bookmark the location to return to collect but in pvp most likely it would have been looted by the person(s) who pop ur ship. u can also buy insurance to cover ur ship loss but cannot insure ur modules.

ok now for pod....this is whereby ur character MIGHT have implants/hardwires (these help u get bonuses to attributes n to ur skills) if u get pod u lose those period. now ur character has wat we call skillpoints (SP)....accumulated thru time based learning...n we all have clone.... there are various grades of clones each can store a set amount of SP...so if u find urself getting more SP then ur clone then its time to upgrade ur clone to the next higher grade to 'store' these SP. this is very important because if u get podded with a clone which stores less then ur SP then u WILL lose SP in ur skills which means it a setback to ur character (losing time) since u need to relearn the lost SP. So upgrade ur clone regularly n make sure if u get podded ("die") upgrade first .... thats abt it i guess...i think got simpler way of explaining lol tongue.gif

eve can also be play on dial-up atm but coming soon got new graphic engine not sure abt the specs then

Why quote mine only never quote others? Picking on me icon_question.gif

I dun actually mean really use calculator calculate lah, example only... but without looking at damage, damage potentials, stats and basically all the harcore math stuff, why do EVE'ers bother with eg ammo types eg anti-matter vs iridium, wrath vs cataclysm, etc?

As for corps overcoming problems, indeed being in a corp, NAY, being in a community will help but most of the time it'll only help so much.

As for skill training, YMMV u feel it's no big deal and the last thing I need here is to argue with LYN incumbents. That's ur opinion and that's that.

But I believe there will be casual gamers who do think it's no small matter. Even the most casual of gamers will want to progress and somehow get ahead. If casual gamers think it's no big deal, then the savegame won't exist, clones can't be installed and people won't be asking for skill queues. Whether people like TheNameX or moiskyrie fall under this category or not I dunno, but as a fellow newcomer to EVE I felt that this point should be made known and made clearly without the beer goggles of longtime exposure or excessive fanboyism to EVE to cloud the issue.

aiya dont overreact ler just frenly banter here ..we share views n give our own views also.. thats wy eve got all of us weirdos tongue.gif

sorry lah didnt mean to step on ur toes n not picking on ur purposely also lah...i dont think i want look back at the 183 pages either biggrin.gif

EVE gametime deducts in realtime regardless of whether u login or not. And there's no carry over. If your subscription expires in 1 month's time and you don't login for that month, bye bye 1 month.

There are 2 definitions of "killed" in EVE, having ur ship blow up and having your pilot or "pod" get killed (podded). If your ship blows up you lose ur ship and all the modules u fitted in it but you can fly your pod back to a station and restart. However, if after ur ship blows up and your pod gets blown up as well, you respawn at the last station you created a clone at.

NP cool2.gif just that after awhile in kopitiam and LYN it's obvious one has to tread VERY carefully.

ALL IMHO and YMMV.

Hi, new player here and i have a few questions. Im a gallente special ops and completed the tutorials already (running on an incursus). It might be important that i state what i plan to do ingame,  missions are what i plan to do for now until i gain more knowledge regarding this game.

Can someone kindly let me know whether i should save up for the catalyst destroyer or another ship? Also, i am having difficulties deciding on the right setup for my ship, do i use blasters or rails for missions?  how about some guide with the middle and low slots?

I understand i should be trying things out myself, would appreciate it if someone can point me into proper directions. Thank you for your time.

Hi, wats ur ING in eve n also have u subcribed? Anyways go to kopitiam in game channel .... lots of ppl to help u there. also get into a player corp since i reckon they can supply u with the t1 ships up to cruisers at least. most ppl dont use the t1 destroyer and skip it totally ... exceptions are those that are dictors pilots in 0.0. gallente pilots can opt for blaster (close up heavy damage) or rails (longer range but less damage) or drone boats (aka domi, etc). get into kopitiam n also can speak to Daniel Tee our resident gallente pilot tongue.gif Missions wise missiles ftw!!! but tats more geared towards caldari ships imo. anyways have fun see you in game

Make sure you read all the available bugs first before simply patching the game. Some known errors would f*** your boot.ini file, which then prevents you from booting your PC. This only happens to Windows XP users tho, Vista ain't affected.

For better fleet performance, don't upgrade to the new 500MB+ patch yet for new graphics. Use the current classic version and enjoy the smoothness until your PC can really take the new graphic contents.

too late oredi kena sad.gif

Earlier i dont have new drivers since ATI official website the new drivers cannot d/l since they dont support errr my lappy brand (they only support some brands like alienware, HP, etc).. cannot d/l since they force u use a verification program n if detect they dont support ur lappy brand then can kiss the newest driver bb (can see cannot touch thing). anyhow got ppl setup omega drivers to support ATI users n apparantely these omega drivers better then the ATI catalyst (official) ones and FOC biggrin.gif .
