hi all,

does singapore's company take in malaysia university's student for internship? hmm.gif

i would like to have my internship in singapore.

My internship period is the last semester of my degree, which means that i am able to continue the job as in permanent position directly after my internship period.

I am currently final year student in Electrical and electronic engineering.

anyone of you all here can of any help? icon_question.gif
I need and I appreciate your help very much.

I am eagerly looking for job based in singapore. helpz....

P/S: I have been applying for internship jobs in Singapore through Jobstreet, but all applications are rejected.
The requirement do not state that "only singaporean and PR may apply" or something similar,
and they do not state that not welcome for malaysia student seeking for internship.

I am wondering, is it bcz that Singapore's company only take in their local universities student (NUS, NTU) for internship
and not for malaysia universities' student?

** My academic result is not an issue I think. Cz I have been performing very well throughout my studies. **

pls advice.

let me list down a few things that employers are concern when taking in internship from overseas student.
1. they need to apply work permit for you in-order to let u reside in Singapore. Applying work permit usually take around 1 month time.
2. applying a work permit needs to go through a medical screening (fees paid by employer).
3. why bother hiring intern from Malaysia when they have so many student in Singapore it self?
4. the student might have home sick or during festive season where we need that person to work, 99% that foreigner sure not going to work because the distance of their hometown from the work place is too far.

If u manage to get an internship in Singapore, i would say that 99% of them got connection in that company and another 1% is lucky and mayb the nature of job of the company does not match most of the local intern's criteria.

PS : with Singapore GE is just around the corner, MOM (Ministry of Manpower) have tighten the rules in approving a work permit, Spass and employment pass. There are a lot of other forumer's work pass application got rejected and bare in mind, they are working full time and not only intern. So in other words, even u passed the employers interview. The SG gov might not accept you as well. Instead of going through so much hassle, why not finish ur intern in Malaysia, then only start looking for a Job in SG after you graduate.

well, as i mentioned, my intern is my last semester of degree. I can continue with a permanent job position directly after I complete my intern.
thus, I am looking for a position where i can have my 4 months internship, continue with a permanent job after that.

Thus, from the company view of point, it is good to them too.
cz for the first 4 months as my intern, they no need to pay me so much. as intern should be just around S$600-800 right?

It is not harmful to them isnt it?
Cz i have completed all my subjects. Just that my university make internship compulsary as the last semester.

let me list down a few things that employers are concern when taking in internship from overseas student.

1. they need to apply work permit for you in-order to let u reside in Singapore. Applying work permit usually take around 1 month time.
ME: The lead time normally is only 2weeks. It also depends on the applicant's profile. If the applicant has the good education background and proper documents(company offer letter and employment letter, certificates). so it wouldn't cause any wasting time. Moreover, the Thread Starter is asking about intern pass. Not working pass.

2. applying a work permit needs to go through a medical screening (fees paid by employer).
ME: You are correct in this point. It is also common sense and not necessary to mention over here. Although you are applying MNC, they also request you to take the medical screening such as Celestica company in Malaysia. So, I think it is not any issue or concern to the Thread Starter.

3. why bother hiring intern from Malaysia when they have so many student in Singapore it self?
ME: You know WHY? MNC will tell you WHY. it is really a common sense to anyone else since they want to hire Talent. And, different culture and nationality will bring some positive opinion that you are never foresee.

4. the student might have home sick or during festive season where we need that person to work, 99% that foreigner sure not going to work because the distance of their hometown from the work place is too far.
ME: Singapore has 1/3 population of the foreigners. So, your point can be form or not? homesick is only applied to those student or immature mindset. and, KL also full of ppl come from other state like penang or johor. So, is it really any issue to those want going to work in Singapore?

If u manage to get an internship in Singapore, i would say that 99% of them got connection in that company and another 1% is lucky and mayb the nature of job of the company does not match most of the local intern's criteria.
ME: finally, I found only truth can come from you. Unfortunately, you never mention to Thread starter that self ability (theory and practical, mindset, problem solving skills) is also an important consideration to most hiring manager.

Intern pass has their own policy. So, it has no any conflict to those working pass, employment pass. So thread starter need not bear in mind of this rule.
If you really want to start your career life in oversea, you may go ahead and dare to dream and make it come true. Don't always narrow your view like others and give yourself many excuses which don't make sense to ppl such as above opinion number 4.

Work permits are a hurdle for Singapore employers to hire foreigners. It cost more and if you have no added advantage over local grads, I don't see why they should hire you.

Of course, I believe you would have a better shot at employers who have international internship programs that hire internationally. Or even, you could try applying to Malaysian companies that have operations in Singapore. Connections definitely help in securing internships in Singapore.

The question is why should they take you instead of a singaporean?
You are getting paid the same amount as a singaporean. No benefits here.
They have to invest more time and money on you.
Your results might be questionable. (some universities in Malaysia has very "loose" academic standards, and most students score based on memorising and doing "past year" questions.). If they take in NUS/NTU at least they know what to expect.

I've actually seen cgpa 3.8 failing simple electronic fundamentals.

Or it might be your resume is generic, unimpressive with lots of grammatical errors. (This is my first impression, judging from how you reply here)

I really didn't see any advantages taking a foreign intern compares with local intern. Lester1987 actually sums it out pretty well.

What are the electronic fundamentals they failed?

A lecturer of mine told me that a graduate from UK uni couldn't differentiate AC and DC.
