yeah.....Peerless, Vifa and Scanspeaks make alot of OEMs for famous companies

The first gen of SF Cremonas were using scanspeaks drivers

Peerless and Vifa is even more common due to the price

i had a Peerless setup in my car many years ago
in short...some of the good technology R&D in Scanspeaks were brought down to the Vifa and Peerless ranges
*
Yes, price factor. The other company I like is Wavecor, but they are very expensive.

They are good driver manufacturer in Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, China, Philipones and Japan. I hear Indo got 1 soon. What happened to our Malaysia?

QUOTE(hushymushy @ Sep 24 2014, 11:33 AM)
what's the purpose of the copper cap?
passive filtering?
*
To reduce impedance increment at high frequency and reduce the nonlinearity due to inductance modulation.

QUOTE(hushymushy @ Sep 24 2014, 11:40 AM)
i see.....good stuffs....

You know how to appreciate it when you know its spec. When I first got a pair of it, I was stunned the performance of its price.

I used to own Ascend Acoustics CBM 170SE. They both are impressive and very well engineered, but Encore has better lower end and cheaper. Pair it with a sealed sub, they are good to go with any genre.

QUOTE(hushymushy @ Sep 24 2014, 11:56 AM)
i'm not a fan of subs.....
i find it hard to match d speed

that's the reason i go for full floor stander for main rig
have the setup done correct.....d low just blows you away
*
Sometime, a sub is required especially below 40hz. A 7-10" woofer wouldn't go very low just because you cannot defy the laws of physics.

I am not a big fan of sub either, but I truly love my dual driver Epik Legend. They are incredibly fast.

Plan to buy this old receiver with pcs of speaker
sansui G7000

any master pieces speaker for vinyl or FM?

This is a highly acclaimed old school amp. The problem is you may need to take a look inside, clean all the dust, and check of any component need to be replaced. Otherwise it is a collectable.

For speaker, just get any good speaker with high to average sensitivity and low impedance will do the job well.

I have a pair of pristine "almost" vintage Kenwood speakers with me...about 20 years old. Almost zero scratches and certainly no dings. Yes, humidity is a killer here but I reckon the main reason why our used products here are nearly all fit for the bin is the matter of fact that we do not take care of them once we purchase newer items.
*
I have a pair of vintage denon speaker, look like kind of LS3/5a, pair with a i-dont-know-brand turntable. The mid and high sound alright but the low is unbearable. The woofers are definitely gone.

I notice in Malaysia, the rubber surround the speaker cone deteriorate easily. And if the cone was untreated, it become so fragile and you can feel powder things came out when blow it really hard. Next, the speaker used somekind of chip board as surrounding and line side lining all are detached from the main cabinet.

Definitely, I wouldn't be able to do anything on it except as collectibles.

To prolong the speaker, store your 'lovers' in air-conned room and cover the speaker with their grille and a cloth. I heard someone told me dust is acidic whenmixed with humidity.

QUOTE(GI Jie @ Oct 1 2014, 12:32 PM)
I also inherited a pair of B&W speakers from my dad which is from the 70s. It is somewhere in my Ipoh house all wrapped up. Maybe I should bring it in from the cold and test the bugger. Hope the speaker cone doesn't drop off the cabinet. Maybe I should start recording it before I blast it.
*
If the cone is yellow in color, it should be kevlar as B&W incorporated the use of kevlar in 70'

Could someone sifus out there pls help me choose a beginner's AVR and bookshelf combo just to upgrade tv sound. Its for movies and light radio listening. Planning to use 2 bookshelf speakers and maybe a subwoofer for phase 1, then add-on a central speaker in phase 2. Not going for 5.1 as this is an apartment with space constraints. Budget for the AVR is RM2k and another RM1K for the bookshelves. Thanks a lot in advance.

What about treat yourself a pair of XLS Encore? You can add in a center XCS Encore when you are ready. drool.gif

"Necessary".. honestly I am so clueless at present, thus the ''..''. So many features with a diverse nomenclature.. rclxub.gif  I was hoping to define that from feedback from you guys.. wink.gif

Thank you nm7 for the info on Unicorn, will drop by and see. On that point, I'd like to reiterate that im looking for bookshelf speakers and not towers or floorstanders. I managed to find a list of speakers below 1k? from a previous posting by fx20 at https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1995757/all. The few I have picked out are :

Mission M31i, Whaderdale Diamond 10.1, Monitor Audio BR2 and Aviano 1.

Can you/anyone tell me which is preferable? Much appreciated
*
Haha the thread was created for my friends a few years back. Most of the speakers are slightly over 1k on the market now.

Ironically, most of those who interested in those speakers are ended up with xls Encore.

Anybody own a Yamaha A-S501 stereo amplifier? How is it if pair with Wharfedale or Monitor Audio BR2?
*
I have a friend who owns A-S700, higher end model compared to 500 series.
He told me once there was not much differences compared to TP60 except that A-S700 is slightly brighter on mid. He tested it with XLS Encore and Kef Q300.

The other day I auditioned BR2 with Dio's Holy Driver. The bass was kind of "boomy" and messed up and the mid is a bit darker. It counldn't articulate Vivian Campbell's Les Paul notes very well. It is a good speaker but I think not really suitable for rock music.

hmm, don't know how is it compare to NAD 3020i cool2.gif
*
I believe in progression of science.
3020i is an old amp. I believe the modern amp should sound alike or better than old designs. This is true especially with the advancement of audio testing equipments which can help designer to build amps that deliver better and accurate sound.

I own a Teac A-X750 DC Integrated Amplifier, which was considered 1 of the best int amp in 80s (it has cd direct, which was a great deal then). I tested it out a couple year ago, it could hardly meet my taste today except my nostalgia love of it when it has served me almost 10 years, and of course, the high price I paid for it.

If you still fancy with NAD product, their NAD D 3020 Hybrid Digital Amplifier is pretty good. It is based on the Hypex class D design, which is one of the high end class d solution. I believe this sounds much better than the old 3020i.

Just my opinion, sorry if I offended NAD die hard fans. biggrin.gif

Anybody know where to look for Rotel amp?
*
Perhaps you can consider mINT,

https://wyred4sound.com/products/integrated-amps/mint

to me, they have really good bang of the buck, but most importantly, they sound really really good.

I particularly like the small footprint which I can hide it inside the cabinet.

If going to buy MINT, it's a better choice to consider Arcam FMJ A19 hmm.gif
*
Both are good amps. It all depends on what do you want.
If you streamed digital music, looking for space saver, you go with the mINT.
If you have lot of analog source, your go for A19.

But the former give you 100w per channel, built-in dac, lot of balanced connectors, and much lower THD.
Most importantly, it is direct sale, no excessive mark-up. Of course, this tarnished by weak ringgit today.

For such small device, 100W delivery is a doubt, I think logically it should be 50W instead, at 8ohm?

They deliver 170w into 4 ohms. Size? They are class d with analogous power supply.

You have not seen my 130 watt per channel power amp, they are about the same size.

I am still deciding between these choices.

X-ls encore
Dali Zensor 1
Wharferdale  10.1/122

Whats the local selling price for Dali and Whaferdale ? Opinions on which to choose is welcomed.
*
They are no in the same league. Xls is meant to be audiophile speaker whereas the two are use mainly for HT.

Although it is not directly related, please read the following post and it pretty much answer most of your query,

In addition, you can't use price to judge XLS Encore. This is because we build and distributed the speaker and the price to you is almost direct factory price. rclxms.gif

Dynaudio makes decent speakers, hopefully with the new owners they still retain their signature sound. Dynaudio is carried by CMY in Malaysia, not sure about the price as you'll likely have to ask.

Most bookshelves can power up normal room conditions, its just whether your amplifier can push its limits without clipping at higher volumes.

Ya, goertek.

The non-intercept and less reflection bouncing sound concept, kinda attractive to me, it seem that's the idea of great sound, instead of traditional directional and 5.1 surround effect, to me that's an innovative technology to begin with, but the look is a downside to me, what do you think?
*
It is a waveguide driver and with closure. Still subject to directional and Thiel paramaters. What innovative to you?
