Not for his customers, maybe... for the undertaker - earning more is better.

QUOTE(r1v3r)
teacher / lecturer ( not tuition teacher)
Why would a teacher or lecturer be better off earning less?

QUOTE(r1v3r)
minister
As above. What's the upside for a minister to earn less?

QUOTE(r1v3r @ Jun 15 2011, 11:38 PM)
It is hard for some people to see and think out of money.  Not everything in this world, jobs in this case is ALL about money.

There are compassion, humanity, social responsibility  and personal health problem in the example I gave.

Some jobs only see numbers and money. Some have to see the suffering of other people in their jobs.

You never see coffin sales and promotion package right? Seeing the suffering of the family. . Will you hope you get new order the next minute?

Teacher.  This is a passion jobs. Does a teacher see the student as product.  More student means more money? Will they go the extra mile to help one weak student?  That means time and energy spend without OT claim. This line is over work under paid.

Minister.  I have nothing more to say.  You hear it from last GE.  Their own salary create the fall of one minister.
You are taking the issue out of context.

My statement was that for anything that you do, getting more money for doing it is always better than getting less.

I did not say getting money at the cost of "compassion, humanity, social responsibility and personal health problem" or whatever other irrelevant factor you seek to introduce into a very simple concept. There is no "cost" per se in my statement. I simply said whatever you choose to do, for whatever the reason why you chose do it, it is always better for you if you're paid more rather than less to do it. This was in response to someone asking an equally simple question whether it was better to get paid 2K or 10K.

I notice everyone here talk about their future, family and kids but not one mentioning their parents.
There's not much the govt and the racists & religious fanatics can do to my retired parents.

But to me and the next generation, it could mean a life of mediocrity (if you're lucky) or one of subjugation (if you're not).

@Lester: Thanks. Trying to figure out what to do with my (malaysian registered) car. Don't wanna sell cos the market price is less than loan redemption price by like rm8k. Might as well keep since it's <$200/mth installment.
I sold my car in 2005 (loan paid off though) and bought Guinness shares at 5 bucks with the proceeds. If I return to MY and I sold those shares now (at $10.30 today), including the reinvested dividends, I'd have enough to buy the current model of the same car brand new for cash.

If you're not in a position to utilise the car, convert it into cash to preserve the residual value. Invest it to recoup whatever's been depreciated before you sold it.

It's a fact that housing prices in SG has grossly outpaced std of living increases in the last 10 years. Right now, the govt has to decide who to screw over. Current property owners who have factored in continuing large capital gains or future buyers who are increasingly unable to afford the home they want. If you look at it from the voting base p.o.v, you'd have to say the current batch of owners will be sacrificed.

Why are most of my friends working in Singapore depressed?
One of my friend who just graduated and now working in NUH said this:
"Working life here sucks. Room small small, old old, rental so damn expensive. Pay low. Working hours insane."
Lolz..I hope not everyone experience the same thing.
ALL my outstation classmates at Taylor's College were depressed, in that's the definition of depression. All of us were not from KL, just finished SPM, never been away from home before... suddenly have to rent a little room (a couple of us even did a Harry Potter ie. rented the utility cupboard underneath the staircase), cook/buy our own meals, find our own way to school, manage our own budget, organise our own lives etc... basically take care of ourselves.

That my friend, is called growing up.

@keith you can apply anytime after 6 months, since you need to give 6 months payslip. but your chance of approval is lower unless you are P1. I read somewhere that P1 - recommended 6mths-1year, P2 1-2 years, Q 2-3 years, S ... 3years+? Dunno how accurate is that info.
Actually you can apply anytime. 6 months payslip is not compulsory. They just want to know your true salary. I submitted a letter of support from my company which detailed my salary, history with the company and the company's intention to continue employing me etc.

The trick is to spend (when you now draw 10K), the way you did when you were only drawing 2K. This is difficult to do, and not smart when it comes to food and time-saving transport... but for eg, you don't need to pay double the rental for a private condo when a HDB will do just fine.

Or maintain a strict savings percentage, so that both your savings and your expenses go up according to your salary increase. Personally, I use this approach. Reward myself for my efforts but without jeopardising my passive income/retirement.

I don't know. I could always manage to control my finances quite effectively, even when I was a kid. Never could fully understand why other people couldn't do the same.

ya true. tat is why the last sentence stated that, one must not overspend, there is always a limit which we can spend and which we must save.
A lot of people underestimate how much they need to retire, and therefore set that limit wrongly. They don't anticipate that they will most probably get sick for a long time and need a lot of money for treatment. Most people think they will be healthy up to the last day and then die peacefully in their sleep. Most people are not so lucky.

I realised that alot of Malaysians working in SG are actually came from Perak, is this true? why ah?
Simple. Perak & Ipoh (used to) produce a lot of kids and there's nothing for them after SPM. There are no (respectable) universities or tertiary institutions, so they go off to KL, SG or overseas to study. Those who come back after uni (like me) find out that there are no major 'international' companies/employers in Ipoh apart from the semicon firms. So (like me) they venture out again after a short stint in Ipoh.

My hardcopy resume's a one-pager.

All it has is a list of my degrees, professional qualifications, last 5 jobs and no more than 5 bullet points about 'other skills' like languages, specific knowledge and experiences.

And when I describe my job, I don't write a long story. Title, duration, company and one sentence on the scope of what I do (eg. I am the "xxx role/process owner/decisionmaker" at US$xxx million/billion revenue business).

Statistic reference please, why bother asking why when you not even confirm whether it's a fact or not?
I don't there's a statistical reference. But I have to say, my colleagues and I do hear this "perception" a lot. Maybe it's just my office. 2 of my 4 bosses since I arrived in Singapore have been Ipohites. Now that it's my turn, I have to say favouritism or familiarity does play a part. My hand picked successor will be another Ipoh-mali I recruited from our KL office.

Like I said. Already fully shared by giving step by step instructions. If you can't draft your own resume with instructions like that... maybe a one-pager's not quite right for you lah.

Btw, if anyone's interested in the Samsung Galaxy S II... Singapore sucks. No contract price here is $998... but only RM2090 in KL (Samsung shop) and HK$5300 in HK (Fortress).

QUOTE(Mackiddo @ Jun 23 2011, 11:58 PM)
yeah. i was surprised by the pricing as well. It's more expensive than iPhone4 in Sg. Not many would choose a more expensive Samsung over Apple.
The thing is that there are not many people who are still deciding whether to get an iPhone or Android. By now, you're either an Apple fan or an Android fan. Apple fans won't get the S II no matter how cheap it is, and Android fans won't buy an iPhone even if the S II was more expensive.

I'll probably get the S II from Malaysia on my next trip home and save S$150.

More room for price drop... get it when you need it..
Looking at how Samsung has priced the Tab or Galaxy S, they didn't drop the price much at all, until the replacement model was no more than 3 or 4 months away.

However, the telco subsidised prices with plans, did drop quite a bit 6 months or so after the launch.
