I recently google on custom built HO alternators, as I believed it is hard to find aftermarket HO alternator or even NONE for some car models. Anyone heard of custom built HO alternators from Excessive Amperage, Iraggi, Stinger (made by Wrangler) and Ohio Generator? I made enquiries with them through email, 1 of them could build a 180A for my Myvi, rest of them haven't replied.

Any members ever custom build a HO alternator with them or from other sources? Reliability issues?

Anyway, I have another question to ask..is the voltage regulator built internally inside the OEM alternator, or external separate? Heard that they could set up an external adjustable voltage regulator (12-20 volts) for an added cost. Is this good?

180A is a lot more juice than you need...

whats the alternator for? SPL competitions?

Just becareful with external regulator. It will fried your electronic parts easily. Also, don't find those normal rewinding coil alternator. They are not accurate and dangerous. Already saw few case with those "rewinding technology" ended up fried all those expensive equipment.

If your system is drawing 180A, u are safe to use alternator from 80-120A. Other that that are not advisable.

well, myvi's alternator output is small..Besides ICE, i have HID for headlamp and foglamp. It's always good to have larger output alternator to accomodate those extra electrical loads.

180A is what they probably could juice it out for my alternator.. I don't think I'm going to need that much, lesser to say such as 120A like what Howie mentioned.. I'm planning to get a higher output alternator, not for SPL but adequate for a decent SQ setup.

my advise is change ur current battery to 60A at front(max for myvi i think) and add another 60/70A battery first. This will give u the best current with less headache.

When your system not drawing such ampere, your alternator will only work with less than 20% of it's full output. Alternator only provide full output when it sense current drawing at it's capacity. I believe you wont really turn ur radio at high volume all the time to drain the battery and alternator...(unless u got a external regulator which can be tweak to constantly supply certain current to the system)

problem with external regulator is there's always chance for overcharging your battery and cause the battery fail.

i agree..with howiechoo
use NS 70 battery.. the sound really chnge..
use a water one instead the dried one...
NS 60 won't do for me at all...
perhaps i use 15" for my SQ..& 2 4-channel and 1 mono 450 W digital amp

probably what u'll need to do is to get a voltmeter/multimeter to check the voltage at your battery point and at your amp terminal what's the voltage drop when engine running, aircon on, HID on, and bass hitting. i don't know what's the acceptable voltage drop as i'm not an electrician, my view is, if it drops below 12volt at battery point, then u might have to do something. If it drops below 12volt at amplifier terminal, probably u need to upgrade your power cable to larger size to reduce voltage drop along the line.

either which your situation is, in my humble opinion, definitely battery upgrade 1st, and as zennn suggest, BIG 3 upgrade as well. if you have a high demanding system, try deep cycle battery, they can give out plenty of juice...

@zennn, not to be rude, but SQ might be quite demanding on the current as well....i'm currently running about 375A (rated) of system from 3 amps...however, like howie said, we're not listening to our system at full volume all the time...furthermore, the actual current flowing would definitely be lower then the total rated amperage(at least this is the case in my system). So there isn't a need to upgrade the alternator as such, as a deep cycle battery would probably be sufficient to do the job... icon_rolleyes.gif

the only time the system would suck a lot of current if you're playing low bass and playing it loudly, which u will hardly ever do in SQ system

all those years competing i only use ns60 battery in honda jazz with standard alternator and no capacitor...
