Dear all Ipad users,

I am quite tempted to buy the Ipad one for my studies after the price drop upon the release of Ipad 2.

But my main concern is, knowing apple products, will it become obsolete 1-2 years later? Just like the Ipod touch 1. unsure.gif unsure.gif Or should i buy Ipad 2 straight? unsure.gif

Any views by apple users? As a student i can't be changing these kind of stuff every year lor..later they one fine day say Ipad One not compatible with the new iOS update then really sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

lol my main concern is that the Ipad one cannot be updated in the near future(looking at how Apple upgrades their products so fast) just like the Ipod touch 1.

I'd think that the iPad 1 will remain supported until at least iPad 3 (if the next iPad is counted as 2.5)/4 (if the next iPad is counted as 3) comes out, so no worries. But since iPad 2 already out, better to wait for SG release and get one from there anyway (or wait for SG AP sets to show up in LowYat). Save you the hassle of having the iPad go obsolete on you one year earlier. But those who already bought the first gen can safely stick to it for another gen or two.

The existing Ipad 1 is more than decent enough, especially since you won't be doing anything too heavy duty on it. I currently use mine for work emails, the 'net, reading, watching stuff while mobile, and of course various apps. I'm getting an Ipad 2 because I love my Ipad, and any improvement will only be a bonus (though I know I dont actually HAVE to).

If you're conscious of the budget, I'd say the Ipad 1 will be good for at least another 1 year, when perhaps the next model will introduce some major improvement, if not, maybe even 2 years, no problem. Don't waste cash if it's an issue for you. thumbup.gif

Actually, to be more precise, since you're a student, don't waste your parents' cash, be like me later on and waste your own tongue.gif

Haha well I am going to buy this using my birthday present fund. Still haven't touched the money yet. @@ just need parent's permission and good justification. tongue.gif

But my concern would be the resale value looking at iPod touch 1 & iPod touch 2. Itouch 1 has seemingly become obsolete as it cannot be updated whereas itouch 2 still can be updated with the latest iOS n still have 2nd hand value(although not a lot but there are still buyers).

Or am I being too paranoid? unsure.gif

Okla if I decided to get iPad 1, is it advisable to get 2nd hand. Yes I an very kiamsiap with my money although I know I can afford a brand new one. ><

i was keep analysed ipad 1 is good enough to perform with the spec it had now. Majority Apps still good to go with Ipad 1 spec now.

Not until i watched video how the paused game can be continue on ipad 2 instead of restart on ipad 1. It is a pretty good bonus features for heavy gamers.

And the iMovie only officially allow to install on Ipad2 is also a sign that more and more working routine from Computer can transfer to Ipad.
Who knows there will be a Photoshop on ipad?!

Wait 1 or 2 months to get ipad2 from Sg or local. Its worth to wait just a short moment like this.

Save the few hundred to invest a good screen protector, casing and especially APPS~! You gonna need a few hundreds to make your ipad works like your "personal computer".

Else it is just a boring piece of aluminium without useful Apps..
Ipad is nothing without your creativity and exploration dedicated into it.

Just like people getting pdaphone to make call and sms purpose only.

i dunno...but ipod 4 and ipad 2 looks similar to me...just that its larger...and even ipod 4 i cant fully utilize it...therefore at this moment i would go for the cheaper ipad...with rm1599 u can get the 3g and wifi...but ipad 2 u have to fork out extra cash for the 3g function...

I've checked a few threads at the garage sales and they certainly don look cheap. sweat.gif

Like all electronic items... Obsolescence will always be there given sufficient time. Hence iPad 1 timeline/ life cycle will be around 2 to 3 years of good usage. Just like iPhone 3G to 3GS to 4. By the 3 year, u will probably change to iPad 5 lol.. So don't worry about it being obsolete and resale value... Important things is if u need it now,, just get it. iPad 1 is good enuf for decent usage plus price is affordable now.

The quest for continuous upgrade is forever...lol

Invest in a decent matte sp if u like smooth scroll. Clear sbishoit the Susah to scroll at times if finger is oily.. And a good decent case.. Take care of it n it will serve u well beyond yr needs...lol

Look for these accesories in eBay, they're much cheaper, a lot of them also get stock from china then sell it in Malaysia for slightly higher price so they could earn the margin... While some ppl are willing to pay extra because of not having to wait for it to ship...

You need to know what version you want to buy TBH.
iPad 1 16GB Wifi is hardly available for Apple Stores, Resellers and Online Apple Store.
The next cheapest model may be the next to be hard to get.

IMHO, if you are the first time iPad buyer, then go for iPad 2 ... Unless your purpose for using iPad is mainly surfing the net, facebook or other social networking, light gaming (don't care about the latest games) and want to take advantage of the price drop of iPad 1 ... then go ahead with Ipad 1.

The litmus test is when some apps (mainly games) take advantage of the faster processor/gpu/gyroscope, you don't feel you are left out.

For a bargain, hell yeah.

If you don't mind those new cameras, slimmer body and a tiny bit faster CPU & GPU.

What's more 64GB 3G iPad2 is going to be hella costly.
Make your choice.

I would go for the iPad 2 simply because its much faster and smoother with the dual core 1 Ghz cpu. The graphics performance also much more powerful(7 times more powerful according to Apple). I do feel my ipad 1 is slow and laggy at times.

It also have cameras and you can do video calls with facetime or skype. And record 720P video.

Smart cover is so cool to have too especially the on/off features built into it.

All this adds up to a very difference experience in the long run.

When you buy a technology, which in your case is ipad, there no point of looking at the resale value- it won't be appreciating, same apply to other technological product as well- market will pressure them to introduce a new line (or generation) in the next few months.

So your question whether the ipad is absolete or not- yes, it will, maybe in next 2-3 years, esp when they will come out with another gen (eg ipad3) or other tablets can offer something better than apple's ipad (which i doubt in anyway). If i were you, I'll wait for another month or two, until the ipad2 is on the market, since there's no urgency of getting one at the moment.

True, I bought MacBook Pro 2010 model a few months ago when the 2011 model was announced... because DO NOT WANT Intel rubbish GPU. mad.gif

Sold my iPad 1 last week for way too cheap for 32GB WiFi + 3G... but the benefit was a very fast sale not too much negotiation and messing around, particularly since I was concerned iPad 2 is coming so asking price of iPad 1 would have to be lower... Plus I didn't want the seller to feel, "Ah, dammit should have just waited for iPad 2". Good deal for them, quick cash for me.

iPhone 3GS is still good. My mum is using mine. I may have to use my iPhone 3G as I need to RMA my iPhone 4 sometime in the next few months before warranty expires, due to home button losing sensitivity to clicking.
