Hello, I just bought the brand new sony vaio s (i5 sandy bridge, amd/intel swithable graphics, 4gb ram, 320gb hard drive) for 3300rm a week ago. Everthing about the laptop is fantastic (screen, touch pad, keyboard, build quality, performance...), only there is one huge problem : the heat and noise when I watch hd videos or game. So I complained to the sony store and they replaced my laptop (on Wednesday). But the same problem persists : heat and noise. mad.gif

Now I am desperate to get rid of the laptop and buy another model. What should I do ?

So don't buy a sony vaio S

My fren tell me not to buy Vaio cos Sony not famous for their lappy, Vaio is due to marketing branding by Sony itself. Fast fast sell it off if unhappy.

Is it possible to get something like 3000 rm cash out of it ? If it's possible, then I would do it NOW !

No, as the asus u36jc comes with old specs, no dvd drive and costs 3000rm. I think that the sony vaio s seemed like a good deal considering the specs, the battery life, the build quality, the design and weight, the screen...

Seem like Sony choose to use low quality fan onto SB series which is loud like hell.

@fofofofo, if u use stamina mode (with HD3000) to play, is the fan still as loud as performance mode?

The new Toshiba L700 comes with GT525M only whereas Asus A series and Acer Aspires are budget-line laptops... You should give the TimlineX 4830TG some consideration thumbup.gif

If their built in battery is like Apple's.. I really dun mind.. Because they won't wear off easily.. My gf's MacBook more than 2 years already but didn't really wear off very much.. My asus half a year already 5% wear level..

And my son always play NFS Hot pursuit.
No oveheat or noise fan.

without any screenshots from ts we can't really say if it's a real problem or not.[no offence ts but this is internet afterall]

anyway ts,since you're going to buy a new laptop now i suggest doing an even deeper research before buying so that the same thing doesn't happen anymore.

+1, TS should at least show the temperatures before sending the laptop back for refund... that'll help decrease the number of potential "victims" (if its really true) sweat.gif

Well, I filmed the laptop in action. You can really hear the noise in the video. So the shop copied and sent the video to sony, and I got a refund in cash. rclxm9.gif I am very satisfied with sony. rclxms.gif .

Well, I am a complete noob in uploading stuff on youtube. As for the temps, nothing really shocking (the computer got warm, but not burning hot). Yeah, I really believed the laptop was burning, hearing the noise. It's the noise. The noise was unbearable. It's like being in an airplane that's about to take off. Or like having two hair dryers near your ears.

Plus, I would feel really bad for sony for uploading such a compromising video. They were so kind and understanding.

Yeah, I am under the influence of sony sweat.gif

EDIT : For any of you wondering about the fan noise, just youtube => sony vaio fan noise. It seems to be a recurring problem in sony vaio notebooks

On side note, i think this is the only one for VAIO SB case. I even google on SB issue, but no avail. The rest of user seem happy with SB performance (from notebookreview) smile.gif

EDIT : For any of you wondering about the fan noise, just youtube => sony vaio fan noise. It seems to be a recurring problem in sony vaio notebooks

Ok, If any of you don't believe me, then read this quote from pc world :

"When used for long periods of time, the base will get a little warm, but it won't be enough to make you feel uncomfortable, unless you are constantly running programs that require a lot of CPU or graphics power. There is a cooling fan installed in the rear of the chassis, and it kicks in when the CPU or graphics adapter is under a heavy load; it's a relatively loud fan and it can get annoying if you are using the laptop to crunch heavy workloads while you're in a quiet room." Pc World

EDIT : You can guess that I posted my own personnal review under the user name "Kokakolia"

Added on March 27, 2011, 10:00 amAnother quote from the notebookreview forum :

"The SB is definitely louder on a full load. Remember that the SB has 2 sound emitting devices if you don't count the DVD drive (the fan and the HDD). The Z only has one (fan), because its SSD runs silent. As mentioned above, the SB sounds like a washing machine when gaming. The Z can just be described as moderately noisy (and relatively quiet compared to the SB)" Brianho1337

No, as the asus u36jc comes with old specs, no dvd drive and costs 3000rm. I think that the sony vaio s seemed like a good deal considering the specs, the battery life, the build quality, the design and weight, the screen...

Well, compare the vaio and the asus side by side :
- design : sony > asus. There is a huge gap between the screen and the chassis on the asus, making it look cheap and ugly. The glossy materials look cheap on the asus. The sony has no gloss, no chrome, only the best materials, and no gap between the screen and the chassis.
- build quality : sony > asus again, stronger materials, stronger hinges.
- specs : sony > asus. The new processor makes a huge difference in the sony with the intel hd3000 that beats the asus' nvidia gt310 in stamina mode
- portability : sony > asus. The integrated dvd drive is much better than the external one in terms of portability and performance.
- screen : sony > asus. The sony's screen is of better quality and is anti-glare.
- keyboard/touchpad combo : sony > asus. Back lit keyboard, bigger touchpad.

My point is that the sony seemed to be worth the extra cash. Now I know that I am wrong. The asus is the better deal, in fact any other laptop is a better deal because of one criteria : noise. So in conclusion :

- Noise : *insert any laptop here* > sony vaio sb

he's a guy right? What's wrong with calling him dude? I am lost LOL

I never said it last 10 hours either, you should read my post properly... U36Jc could easily last 6-8 hours on battery saving mode n light browsing as it is running an 8-cell battery...

No, the INTEL I5-2410m is fine. It's just that the air vent on the vaio sb is tiny and half blocked by the screen hinge. Compare the sony vaio sb to the macbook pro. Both share the same ventilation design. However :

- The air vent on the macbook pro is bigger (it's the length of the screen).
- The casing of the macbook pro is entirely made of metal. The metal on the body is used like a "big heat sink".
- The vaio is a combination of plastic and metal => more heat inside
- The tiny air vent on the sony requires the fan to work more to keep the laptop cool

Conclusion : The macbook pro is quieter (but warmer on the outisde) than the sony vaio sb under heavy usage.

The sony and the asus weigh about the same (1.6~1.7), but the sony has a built in dvd drive. About the battery, I think that over 6 hours is overkill for both models. I only need about 3~4 hours of battery life. I chose the sony for the better overall quality (screen, build quality, hinges, design).

If hot pizza = very warm, then yeah, it's true. BUT, the fan noise stays relatively calm, and the inside stays cool. That's my point.

i got to play with new SB earlier today. what a spectecular sight! its slim n as expected, the magnesiun allow are both beautiful to see n hold

maybe bcoz of the slim design the fan need to work extra hard hence extra noisy to keep it cool.weird tho, my last gen sr55 also kinda slim but also quiet..

if only it got more beefier gpu then 6470. sigh..thats the only thing keeping me from owning one

i wanna try the fan noise but no software or program that to test out...

another turn off thing is the battery cannot move out unless you need to unscrew it....if everytime charge when using it...will make the battery like shorten...

Just install Warcraft III on a usb key, it's < 1 GB, or better, install minecraft (and update it at home) on usb key and run it on a vaio sb in the store. I warn you, it will be noisy

If anyone can test this out and come back with feedback. I'll strike this off my list. I'm worried TS got the cacat unit. I try HD movie, no hear any noise.

2 things hold me back are the noise which i still don't know how loud and the battery which require unscrew remove it....

if the bios update can solve the fan and noise issue....then i will take it coz this notebook has almost the spec i wanted...

i had checked that sony alr released bios update to reduce fan noise, y u don't try update before u return it?

thanks for the source..
i guess you guys should hold the purchase on this SB until they fix it. dont wanna hear some regret once purchase has been done..

the slim factor is common to has a lil bit of noise from heat vent due to to its design.. but to get it loud like washing machine is seriously annoyed. my Z does have noise of the fan when the processor works hard but its acceptable level.

SB26 = 500GB, 1 year
SB16 = 320GB, 1 year + 1 year(register online)
