Hello, I just bought the brand new sony vaio s (i5 sandy bridge, amd/intel swithable graphics, 4gb ram, 320gb hard drive) for 3300rm a week ago. Everthing about the laptop is fantastic (screen, touch pad, keyboard, build quality, performance...), only there is one huge problem : the heat and noise when I watch hd videos or game. So I complained to the sony store and they replaced my laptop (on Wednesday). But the same problem persists : heat and noise.
Now I am desperate to get rid of the laptop and buy another model. What should I do ? So don't buy a sony vaio S |

I just feel like waiting for a toshiba (L series), asus (a series) or acer refresh (aspire). I really want no surprises.

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Mar 26 2011, 09:46 AM) +1, TS should at least show the temperatures before sending the laptop back for refund... that'll help decrease the number of potential "victims" (if its really true) Well, I filmed the laptop in action. You can really hear the noise in the video. So the shop copied and sent the video to sony, and I got a refund in cash. |

QUOTE(xSean @ Mar 26 2011, 12:41 PM) if not refund to full....then u sure fark around ... Well, I am a complete noob in uploading stuff on youtube. As for the temps, nothing really shocking (the computer got warm, but not burning hot). Yeah, I really believed the laptop was burning, hearing the noise. It's the noise. The noise was unbearable. It's like being in an airplane that's about to take off. Or like having two hair dryers near your ears. y not u post the temp and the video u recorded for us to justify? Plus, I would feel really bad for sony for uploading such a compromising video. They were so kind and understanding. |

QUOTE(Revamperz @ Mar 26 2011, 02:51 PM) so u go ahead and open this thread with such title and yet feel sorry for Sony if you're to upload and post up result for those temp , the vid where it show defect? Yeah, I am under the influence of sony Quite contradicting don't u think? EDIT : For any of you wondering about the fan noise, just youtube => sony vaio fan noise. It seems to be a recurring problem in sony vaio notebooks This post has been edited by fo-fo-fo-fo: Mar 26 2011, 07:06 PM |

Ok, If any of you don't believe me, then read this quote from pc world :
"When used for long periods of time, the base will get a little warm, but it won't be enough to make you feel uncomfortable, unless you are constantly running programs that require a lot of CPU or graphics power. There is a cooling fan installed in the rear of the chassis, and it kicks in when the CPU or graphics adapter is under a heavy load; it's a relatively loud fan and it can get annoying if you are using the laptop to crunch heavy workloads while you're in a quiet room." Pc World Source : http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/noteb...819#info_bottom EDIT : You can guess that I posted my own personnal review under the user name "Kokakolia" Added on March 27, 2011, 10:00 amAnother quote from the notebookreview forum : "The SB is definitely louder on a full load. Remember that the SB has 2 sound emitting devices if you don't count the DVD drive (the fan and the HDD). The Z only has one (fan), because its SSD runs silent. As mentioned above, the SB sounds like a washing machine when gaming. The Z can just be described as moderately noisy (and relatively quiet compared to the SB)" Brianho1337 Source : http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/56348...-vaio-sb-4.html This post has been edited by fo-fo-fo-fo: Mar 27 2011, 10:01 AM |

QUOTE(myasiahobby @ Mar 27 2011, 10:46 AM) Well, compare the vaio and the asus side by side :- design : sony > asus. There is a huge gap between the screen and the chassis on the asus, making it look cheap and ugly. The glossy materials look cheap on the asus. The sony has no gloss, no chrome, only the best materials, and no gap between the screen and the chassis. - build quality : sony > asus again, stronger materials, stronger hinges. - specs : sony > asus. The new processor makes a huge difference in the sony with the intel hd3000 that beats the asus' nvidia gt310 in stamina mode - portability : sony > asus. The integrated dvd drive is much better than the external one in terms of portability and performance. - screen : sony > asus. The sony's screen is of better quality and is anti-glare. - keyboard/touchpad combo : sony > asus. Back lit keyboard, bigger touchpad. My point is that the sony seemed to be worth the extra cash. Now I know that I am wrong. The asus is the better deal, in fact any other laptop is a better deal because of one criteria : noise. So in conclusion : - Noise : *insert any laptop here* > sony vaio sb |

QUOTE(g4gary123 @ Mar 27 2011, 11:54 AM) hmm...but seems SB this time designs win all model already...u go see the specs in sony website...thickness 23.9mm..wow...max up to 6 hours battery life... No, the INTEL I5-2410m is fine. It's just that the air vent on the vaio sb is tiny and half blocked by the screen hinge. Compare the sony vaio sb to the macbook pro. Both share the same ventilation design. However :and i saw the problem facing by fo-fo-fo-fo not just on sony only...on others brand also got ppl face this problem with the laptop by using INTEL I5-2410m processor model...= ="....i think is intel got problem...better check it out...becareful friendz.... - The air vent on the macbook pro is bigger (it's the length of the screen). - The casing of the macbook pro is entirely made of metal. The metal on the body is used like a "big heat sink". - The vaio is a combination of plastic and metal => more heat inside - The tiny air vent on the sony requires the fan to work more to keep the laptop cool Conclusion : The macbook pro is quieter (but warmer on the outisde) than the sony vaio sb under heavy usage. QUOTE(eugenechiuu @ Mar 27 2011, 11:22 AM) Portability part of course Asus is better, it's lighter dude... Battery life Asus is longer as well.. The sony and the asus weigh about the same (1.6~1.7), but the sony has a built in dvd drive. About the battery, I think that over 6 hours is overkill for both models. I only need about 3~4 hours of battery life. I chose the sony for the better overall quality (screen, build quality, hinges, design).Added on March 27, 2011, 12:36 pm QUOTE(Star_knight79 @ Mar 27 2011, 12:27 PM) If hot pizza = very warm, then yeah, it's true. BUT, the fan noise stays relatively calm, and the inside stays cool. That's my point. This post has been edited by fo-fo-fo-fo: Mar 27 2011, 12:36 PM |

QUOTE(Revamperz @ Mar 27 2011, 07:18 PM) i got to play with new SB earlier today. what a spectecular sight! its slim n as expected, the magnesiun allow are both beautiful to see n hold I tell you, if they fitted a bigger gpu, then the fan noise would have shattered glass. maybe bcoz of the slim design the fan need to work extra hard hence extra noisy to keep it cool.weird tho, my last gen sr55 also kinda slim but also quiet.. if only it got more beefier gpu then 6470. sigh..thats the only thing keeping me from owning one |
