Thanks for the info guys, even though the screen is big and troublesome, it's a good contingency gps system... Will try soon.

Anyway no sim card insert GPS can work?
If not, it's mean GPS positioning using our 3g data plan?

GPS works without activating 3G but locking with satellite will be slower and you need to be in open and stationary to get the initial lock. It will be almost instant when 3G activated.

The other thing most ppl dont know is that GPS actually works even on the wifi-only version of iPad if you use iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot feature. Its not using the old cell tower triangulation method but actually sharing and utilizing the actual GPS chip from iPhone itself. You can try doing the GPS tracking while driving using the wifi-only iPad after tethered with iPhone. Only works with iPhone 4 though. That's the reason I bought the wifi-only iPad smile.gif

if u wanna use the GPS don't turn off the cellular radio. or else the gps chip won't work and it'll only triangulate GPS data like iPad wifi.
Untrue if you are using the 3G version because the iPad will first use the GPS chip, just the locking is slower. I tested this while in Paris last week where I turn off cellular entirely but still manage to track using Map2go

Untrue. The GPS chip is embedded in the Cellular Radio. You need to turn it on for the GPS chip to turn on. If u don't believe me zoom in at maximum in Maps. If you have a blue circle with halo around it (10-30 meters radius), it is only fetching location data via the towers. If there's no blue halo around it then it's on GPS chip.
*
Can you do this experiment:

turn off wifi and turn off 3g.

WIthout both data, it'll not have data location from wifi or 3g.

Now, try to track using gps offline map.

DOn't use google map la. Coz u no data mah.

i'm not tech savvy, it is my best guess Ipad 2 intergrated 3G cellular radio and GPS satelite radio in one chipset. So if disable the 3G means also diabling the satelite radio. which left only A-GPS where can be access by WIFI

try taking out your SIM and turn off WIFI, download an offline map app like Maps2Go, leave it stationary with open clear sky outdoor for minutes (sometimes up to 15min!), you will see no halo but a blue point

cellular is off because no more sim smile.gif

when you turn off cellular, GPS is still active eventhough it is built in the same chip because of separate circuit.

but do note the iPad's gps is practically useless when you turn off cellular because of the long 15min cold initial lock.

you can read more about this here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11982...sageID=11982527

thanks for ur kind explanation. Tat means without sim card, the radio signal receive chipset still can operate and it receive the satelite signal only. And u mention it take 15 min for initial is really a long duration even without AGPS sad.gif
Seems like Ipad 2 did not using a good GPS chipset... sweat.gif

We all know the fact that iPad comes in 2 flavors which is:
1- Wifi only (do not have GPS chip)
2- Wifi + 3G (have GPS chip in 3G module in separate circuit)

So, my question is how often do you use GPS with your iPad? Is it on par with standalone GPS unit or so-so?

Nope. Its too big so it blocks my view & hard to attach to a holder. Besides I don't want to drop my iPad2. I use my iPhone for navigation and it works without any problem.

Not really cost a lot. I just bought SyGic for USD14.99 and its works on both iPhone4 and iPad.

I do care about GPS because I can walk around Hong Kong discussing where we should head to
with my wife looking at 10" screen instead of tiny 3.5" iPhone 4.

I only use GPS when I need to go somewhere I've never been - and that's usually when someone's sitting next to me so I don't have to attach the ipad.

Very different from those ppl who seem to keep their gps turned on even when just going home from office biggrin.gif

Hi, actually iPhone3GS *does* have Personal Hotspot too, but only Bluetooth and cable mode. So, you can try to tether the iPad to iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth connection. I am able to do Personal Hotspot this way, but cannot confirm if iPhone 3GS will share GPS location to iPad as mine is the 3G version.

Hope that helps smile.gif

What i know is only IPAD with 3G only able to use the aGPS service since you need data plan to locate your location. Only use it in malaysia unless you are rich to pay for roaming data plan in oversea with 3G. Another way i think if you have WIFi then you can be located via WIFI service. But that will be problem when you walk away from one AP to another AP that isnt belongs to the same SSID.

Bro, can you confirm the Papago HD is design for the HD resolution. Not upscale from the iPhone version.

I understand Papago supports Malfreemaps. Is that easy to update map from Malfreemaps?

Apple listed the ipad as Assisted GPS. Does this Ipad really have a built in Satelite GPS receiver? I don't think so, much like 3GS or iphone4 it does not.

Hello, GPS apps like tomtom and papago have the full maps downloaded into the iPad, so there is no need for internet / data connection when using it on the road (different from google maps).

You are also partially right; only the wifi+3G version has GPS chip (the wifi only version does not have this chip).

If you have a downloaded map app like tom tom or papago in your wifi+3g ipad, will you still get a satellite lock even when you do not have the 3g switched on (ie no sim card inserted)?

i'm using Papago for iPhone. map from Malfreemaps. more customize to m'sia & s'pore with lots of POI and updated roads. i'm a food lover, so POI is very important to me.

not sure if Sygic's map/POI as comprehensive as Papago. hope to see more comments from Sygic user.

no doubt that price-wise Sygic is cheaper now (USD12.99) vs Papago (USD29.99). if Papago drops their price to the same, will sapu straight away tongue.gif

Just installed Sygic (SG & MY). Here is my short review. In summary, reasonably good Nav system on iPad. If you need details MY map and POI, look for Papago HD that support Malfreemap.

Still figure how to put my iPad on the car dash rclxub.gif

(+)
cheaper than Papago HD SG & MY (USD29.99)
nice GUI
great resolution on iPad, no pixelated. love the big screen
fast GPS locking
Nav mode: fast routing
Nav mode: reasonably fast rerouting (approx 4-5s)
Nav mode: turn on map very fast (<1s). my Papago on iPhone takes about 2s.
Nav mode: clear Nav turn by turn voice

(-)
cannot support Malfreemap now
POI is less superior than Papago's Malfreemap. Not that bad actually.
few of my taman roads not in the map. Malfreemap rules.
POI icons cannot display info when touch on it. (on Sygic website, next software Rev should include this feature)
no junction view

It can b done. Tried it on my wifi unit
Tether with my 3GS and can use the location service on google map.
Hook up on free wifi @ Starbucks also can use location service.
Even short drive can still pick up location on google map when tether with 3GS.
Find iPad function also no problem (for both wifi & tether)
Dow side is that it wil makan ur phone battery.

Have yet to try d Papago app nod iPad tether with phone....

I will share my experience here.
I can use GPS on my iPad2 3G without sim inserted. If your ipad on airplane mode, GPS don't work. Recently tried with a free map while travelling, it works perfectly. I don't have to put my iPad on the dash board, i just hold it on my hand while sitting in the back passenger seat.

currently using the basic model 250 or something. sometimes it does mess me up during highways turning when the road is too tricky for my gps to display properly. and the trouble to update malsingmap too =/

seems like the papago hd display some sorta pictures when there is a turn ahead like garmin higher end models + the ease to update, so i was wondering if i should splurge the money for it sweat.gif

For older models, u should disable everything except Road POI when creating the maps. Applicable to MFM (malfreemaps) only.

if we put the Ipad 2 on the passenger seat lying down without the need to make it standing, does it work? some of u were saying that it's too bulky to be on the dash but i thought the best solution is just having lay down on the seat next to u will do right?

I used Sygic with my wifi iPad and it works tremendously. My only problem is I kept admiring the graphics in Sygic.

The speed warnings are based on historical feedback from the members.
