Developer: SuperGiant Games
Official website: http://supergiantgames.com/?page_id=242
Platforms: PC & XBLA (at this moment)
Release ETA: 2011
Background plot: Something went wrong with your world & everything goes kapoot! You must now make your way to the Bastion & armed with a hammer (& most probably a shield), you'll have to traverse across the sea of nothingness... WHAT?!

I've been following Bastion since late last year & after going through 2 of the clips posted up in YouTube, I was totally in awe! Some of the main points that immediately set Bastion apart from all the RPGs out there are:

1. All levels in Diablo II are randomly generated? Meh... that's nothing. The world & environment in Bastion are constructed / build up around you as your avatar pushes onward across the plain / fabric.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

2. There is no dialogue texts that peel your eyes away from all the action on the main screen. Instead, a narrator will accompany your avatar's adventure by describing all the things you do & see in the game. Make no mistake, the narration doesn't repeat itself twice & based on the review so far, it goes pretty smooth too.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

3. The art! We've seen too many developers that tried too hard in making their games to appear as realistic as possible. When it comes to fantasy & with no sex innuendo involved (*cough* BioWare *cough*), nothing should appear realistic! Catch the screenshots here & drool your hearts out: http://supergiantgames.com/?page_id=242

Oh by the way, if you really appreciate the art, you might also want to pay the Jen a visit: http://jenzee.deviantart.com/

Pic Vid or GTFO? OK OK!

Hahaha... somehow when I first saw it, Bastion reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics instead. Perhaps it's got something to do with the hero's midget size. tongue.gif

I actually got to play it on GDC. Before I played I wasnt impressed at all, looked like a regular hack n' slash. Sure, it looked very good, but still.

Then I played it and I have to say it is the best game experience I have had in a very very long time. The music and narrator is such a big part of the game, without them the game just isnt the same.
My jaw literally dropped while I was playing, it's amazing.

I'll buy 10 copies of this game, easy.

Yeah, I read your reviews in Supergiant Games' Facebook page & I have to admit that I'm filled with nothing but envy. tongue.gif

Did you managed to secure the bandana from Supergiant Games when you visited their kiosk? I was so desperate to get 1 for myself that I actually wrote a Facebook message to Greg Kasavin. It was very unprofessional of me to do that & I totally deserved the no-reply. doh.gif

So how's the gameplay?

I already have high expectations of the presentation of course. tongue.gif

Like the premise too, of apparently doing questing and world building at the same time (it looks like, from the trailer)

According to Ocke, it's awesome but I'm not too sure about the world-building part. IINM, we played no role is constructing the world. hmm.gif

Yes, he can fall off the cliff but I'm not sure if that will kill him. I'll have to ask my friend but according to her article in Indiegames.com:
QUOTE
The narrator, in his whiskey-scratched voice, had been busy relating the Kid's escape from an unpleasant situation when I fell off a ledge into oblivion. Without missing a beat, his monologue fluidly segued into a rather dry 'And then, he falls to his death.' Before I could even respond to what I had perceived as my death, the protoganist came tumbling through the sky to land face first on the cobbled stones. 'Just kidding', the narrator quipped.

The range weapon (ie. crossbow) looks cool, sorta like machine guns.

Here's the update I promised. Yes, your avatar, The Kid can fall off the edge of the floating platforms & will suffer a certain degree of health penalty when he's been brought back on top.

The similarity of city-building element is there but the main catch here lies with the narrator's ability in matching your actions on the screen in real-time. smile.gif

Bastion hitting PC on August 16

user posted image

QUOTE
PC gamers who are curious to see what all the excitement is about surrounding the Xbox Live Arcade action-RPG Bastion will get their chance to play it first hand, as SuperGiant Games has announced that the PC version will be arriving in two weeks on August 16 on Steam.

The PC version offers high-resolution graphics and an all-new PC control scheme, and is currently available for pre-order on Steam. The PC version will cost $14.99 USD. It will be available on other digital download sites at the end of the month.

Bastion will be DRM-free and include Steamworks support for Cloud saves, achievements, and leaderboards; keep in mind, those features will be on the Steam version only. The game will feature remappable PC controls, but also has full gamepad controller support.

The game is a Diablo-like action-RPG, with the major hook being that the game is narrated as you play, and your decisions result in varying narration. The game featuring beautiful, painterly artwork as players journey into the wild unknown, into a literally shattered world, as the player must delve into the causes of a world-shattering catastrophe.

well this game is a lot better than deathspank for sure. i tried it on XBLA. less looting, more customizing option and some of the best action rpg out there. bad thing is that it still stuck with 2d graphics system. wasnt expecting it to come out on steam as it was supposed to be GFWL only.

Anyhow, it's the most charming game you're likely to play this year. The journey from start to end keeps you engaged. You're missing out if you don't get it @USD15.

I actually meant 2nd page of the Gamer's Hideout subforum. A game this special deserves way more attention than it is getting at the moment.

I actually got this on xbla - i don't believe the game will be substantially different on PC to affect my opinion of the game.

The developer mentioned in an interview that the game is meant for PC from the very first day. For the first few expos they joined, Bastion was running from PC, not Xbox.

Check out the various control options in the link below for the pc version, there's the console control scheme, wasd control scheme, and the diablo style control scheme.

edit: rockpapershotgun have also published a gushing review of the pc version. if you're still undecided just have a read.

Check out the various control options in the link below for the pc version, there's the console control scheme, wasd control scheme, and the diablo style control scheme.

Apart from falling down the skies while using Spacebar, I'm pretty comfortable with the WASD+mouse setting. smile.gif

By the way, minor update worth 3.8MB in size:
- Fixed an issue causing the game to display unsupported resolution settings in certain conditions
- Fixed an issue where players could get stuck on a free-floating tile in the The Singer's Dream sequence
- Fixed an issue where the game was not loading custom-mapped mouse control settings

New updates!

- Fixed an issue in which the game would not detect local saved data if players lost their connection to Steam cloud storage

- Fixed an issue where remapping the Left Trigger and Right Trigger gamepad controls fired the default commands unexpectedly

- Fixed an issue in Roathus Lagoon that could cause players to get locked out of the level's final area

- Added support for several advanced command-line parameters (aka Launch Options in Steam).

To set Launch Options in Steam, right-click on Bastion inyour game library, select Properties, then select Set Launch Options.

NOTE: Please be advised that these settings are recommended for advanced users and may adversely affect your game experience.

The parameters are:

-isomovement
Using the default Slinger-style WASD controls, diagonal movements will more closely adhere to the isometric perspective. We would appreciate your feedback about this change.

-windowed
Forces the game to start in windowed mode.

-x [value]
Forces the game to a specific X resolution.

-y [value]
Forces the game to a specific Y resolution.

Example: to run the game in 1280x720 (720p) resolution:"-windowed -x 1280 -y 720"

-noborder
Runs the game in windowed mode but with no windows titlebar or border. (This may improve compatibility or performance versus full-screen mode in some cases or provide a preferable experience.)

-deadzone [value]
Allows a custom joystick dead zone for players experiencingissues with their gamepads. Value is the fraction at which input should register. Example: "-deadzone 0.4".

-lang [value]
Forces the game to load a specific text language. Available options are "en", "fr", "it","de", and "es" for English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, respectively. Example: "-lang de"

-nofixedstep
Turns off fixed time step so that the game no longer dictates the frame rate. (This may improve performance for some users but may also lead to erratic performance in other cases.)

I've been looping Zia's theme non-stop since I completed the first playthrough. It's eerily addictive & at the same time, gave me a weird feeling of melancholy that I can't seem to shake off especially with the Restoration ending.

My first play-through took around 14 hours, perhaps due to me immersing myself with the beautiful art, great music & fantastic narration. I'm currently on my 2nd play-through.

And platform jumpings are kept to the minimum, not even half as frequent as you'll see in a Super Mario game.

You can try it out by downloading the demo here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/107100/

I don't know how to reply you since your post is pretty ambiguous. Half of me would like to encourage you to get the game but another half told me that you intend to pirate it. sad.gif

Supergiant Games is a new company & to have 7 dedicated souls bringing us such an awesome game, I sincerely would like to support them as much as I can, with the hope that they'll be able to churn out another game as good as - if not better than - Bastion.

I flew away tongue.gif

I know choosing that other one will make the game more sense, but I'm not likely to play New Game+ so I went straight to the other one. Maybe I'll start again after a few days just to see the portal easter egg.

They should have made the first ending compulsory in my opinion...

Speaking of easter eggs, i found this biggrin.gif

One reason is because I played it a bit too intensely. I kept humming zia's theme, and when i close my eyes i see....tiles floating up.

Kennot sleep mang.

Did you guys complete all the weapon challenges? I gave up on the hammer, shield, cannon and spear challenges.

Added on September 3, 2011, 7:22 pmI see everybody praising the narrator too. It's quite surprising to see that he's actually a really young guy.

Why are you foregoing New Game+? It's one of the features that is meant to increase the game's replayability value. And yeah, the new Special Attack is pretty beautiful where some white liquid got splattered all over the ground before a blue ring appeared & that certain white machinery pops out. rclxm9.gif

Initially I thought that Zia's theme is the only nice song but after listening to the ending them (Setting Sail Coming Home) a couple times, I grew attached to it so much.

For the Proving Grounds, yup, completed them in all my play-throughs. smile.gif

Usually once I finish a game, that's it. Usually lah, but the narrator's voice kept calling me back....

Yatzee said he has chocolate for lungs. I agree.

You....you're not human for completing all of the challenges @_@ How did you do that

My favourite section of the game is the Jawson Bog by the way. The mindscrew is fun.

But but... I'm not sure if it's just me but in the past I don't mind throwing a game away once I completed them since they were pirated. But now that I've switched to original game, I can't help squeezing out all the lil' juice it has until they're totally dry. biggrin.gif While I agree that the Narrator is the one of the attraction, not everyone seem to think so. Some of them think that his voice is a nuisance. rclxub.gif

For the challenges, if you're interested, let me know which one & I can share my method.

The dream actually scared me the first time it occurred since I was pretty much limbo'ing. sweat.gif

First experience is usually the best. After that sometimes tak syok lagi because you know what's going to happen.

I checked the youtubes for those challenges actually, but i suppose my reflexes in the end are not sharp enough to tackle it. Like the hammer challenge. HNGGG always fall off the ledge or didn't smash fast enough.

And the shield, always not careful enough and get hit >_<

I guess there will always be someone out there who doesn't like something. I really like Rucks, he sets the setting real good

Don't worry, you'll just have to try again. I can assure that it's _NOT_ impossible to get first prize in all the Proving Grounds on your first play-through. smile.gif Perhaps if you find it too time-consuming, you can try again later when you've upgraded your weapons a bit. smile.gif

Supergiant: "No plans" for Bastion DLC, we "held nothing back"

QUOTE
Developer Supergiant Games' Greg Kasavin has revealed they don't have plans to extend Bastion with DLC as they "held nothing back," it's a "complete story".

There are "no obvious extensions," though they'll "continue supporting" the RPG of course. The Steam version included Portal turrets which they "guess" is DLC.

Bastion is quite a unique action-RPG as every action the player takes is narrated. Portal turrets were included as bonus content for the Steam version of the game.

"No, we have no plans to extend the game in that way. As I was saying before, we held nothing back," said Greg Kasavin of Supergiant Games in an interview.

"It's meant to be a complete story, so there are no obvious extensions. We of course intend to continue supporting the game and I guess you could call something like the Portal turrets DLC. We'll continue looking at things like that which we could do, but that's it."

Its an awesome game. I would say, something that isn't too heavy.

I find my self playing it more than Crysis 2 / Rage which are intense FPS.

This game helps you relax. It isn't too complicated so you'd be able to feel at home if you're a fan of hack and slash.

Any games which are similar to this game? I am a huge fan of hack and slash titles.

Hack and slash games like Bastion with more RPG elements:

1. Diablo series
2. Torchlight series
3. Dungeon Siege series
4. Space Siege
And others that I can't recall.

Erm... this might be a lil' spoiler but there's a place in the game where you can play all the songs. Perhaps that will help you in finalizing your decision?

I've read a lot of reviews on how gamepad helped a lot on the coordination but being a keyboard+mouse user myself, I don't see any issue at all. In fact, the developer has made an extra effort by releasing a patch which re-aligned the Kid's movement on keyboard. smile.gif

Too slow? Then activate all the 10 shrines & you'll feel slow no more. biggrin.gif

Nope... what I was trying to say is that you're gonna appreciate the current speed when you activated all 10 shrines later since things are going to get even more hectic.

One thing you can try though; use the Space Bar a lot more. That should make things a lil' bit faster for you.

My first playthrough took more than 10 hours IIRC. If you're not farming for the weapon levels & stopping by once in a while to marvel at the fabulous artwork, then a few hours should suffice. I don't want to reveal too much so I'll just say that the game requires more than a single playthrough.

I'll post up a short review.

Things i like so far
+ Active narrations can be witty sometimes.
+The combat, surprisingly, its fun as i thought it might be annoying like Death Spank's one.
+ The weapons feels different from each other, and there are reasons to use different weapons.
+The option to customise your difficulty is awesome by the Shrine mcehanics.
+ Environments is beautiful, despite its just 2D.

Things i dont really like so far
- It doesnt seem to have a wide variety of enemies.
- Challenge series is quite tough for me.
- The soundtrack is pretty meh at time, but it can be very very good at times.
- I am still unsure whats happening in the storyline after 3.6 hours in the game.
- The lack of other voices in the game is a bit underwhelming.

Conclusion so far: Still love it, despite it is slightly disappointing due to the hype around this game. Bastion have been a pretty good independent game so far to me. My 7.50USD is well spent. If you have 7.50USD to spare, get this game. It is worth playing.

Hmm... not sure if you're sharing the same sentiment as I do. biggrin.gif I'm just a lil' disappointed that a great game like Bastion gets thrown into the offer bin so early while others might get disappointed due to them getting the game at full price. biggrin.gif

Anyway, looking at the bright side, this promotion will lead to more gamers owning a copy of Bastion & experience for themselves the topsy-turvy world of Caelondia. smile.gif

Thanks for the honest review. Pertaining to the cons, do allow me to counter a few of them. smile.gif

It doesnt seem to have a wide variety of enemies.
You'll soon encounter more types of enemy once you progress deeper into the plot.

Challenge series is quite tough for me.
Tough if you're new to the game or the weapon levels are too low. You'll pwn them easily once you're used to how the different weapons work.

I am still unsure whats happening in the storyline after 3.6 hours in the game.
No worries. The revelation will come once you meet up with some survivors.

gunner and roxy are usually the best option if you could dodge rockets or tank shells. the pack a huge punch. i prefer roxy airstrike with lockon, but the recharge is ridiculously long 60sec. I dont seem to prefer the armour black dude.

Considering the time you spent at the other locations, I would find it weird if the last level took me more time to explore compared to the others. After all, there's a sense of urgency especially with the latest stance by the Ura (can't reveal much or else I'll be spoiling a lot). I managed to test all the items in the dreams... perhaps that was why I spent >10 hours in my first playthrough.

No specific combination for me. Some works on certain batch of enemies, some don't. In my scenario, the mortar is useful in clearing some subterranean monsters. I've seen YouTube clips of people using the pike charmingly.

I was so comfortable with the WASD setting that I didn't really try the other configuration. Based on the keys involved, yup, should play the same like a Diablo.

I think im going for New Game Plus, as the game's story is written to be replayed again.

Interested in having the Narrator... well... narrating your wedding ceremony? wub.gif

A wedding featuring Bastion's narrator? For one fan, it happened

user posted image

QUOTE
Bastion is an amazing game, and the team at Supergiant Games is a passionate bunch. An Ars Technica reader named Jay Greschner sent us this wonderful story about a very special surprise the developer put together for his wedding.

The story begins simply: after becoming a fan of the game's soundtrack, Greschner sent an e-mail to Supergiant about helping out with the ceremony itself. After that? Well, I'll let him tell the story.

Now as awesome as the soundtrack for Bastion is, we all know the thing that makes the game is the narration by Logan Cunningham. So I thought why not get in touch and see if we could get the Narrator to do some lines for our wedding? A quick e-mail explaining the situation was written up and fired off, and then the waiting began.

Soon after, Greg Kasavin (writer and creative director of Bastion) got back to me and we had a brief discussion. In my initial e-mails I had sent a couple of example lines but Greg replied that the Narrator had a certain tone that he wanted to keep even though this was out of game and was wondering if he could write some stuff up for Logan. I had no problem with this and Greg said that they'd try and record some lines before PAX Prime.

A couple of days later, I got another e-mail containing 4 recordings that the Narrator had done for us and was just amazed and honored that Supergiant Games would do this for me.

Greschner set up the audio, and his brother would play each audio clip at certain points during the ceremony. The narrator talking about the wedding as it happened was a major surprise for his wife. You can listen to the audio files right here:
Here Comes the Bride

Cell phones

The couple

Kiss the bride

"Well, things went off without a hitch and the custom recordings from the Narrator completely floored my wife," he wrote.

This was an amazing thing for a game developer to do for a fan, and it helped to make a wedding that no one will ever forget.

So congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Greschner, and a big thumbs-up to Supergiant Games. Go buy Bastion, if you haven't. It's a wonderful game.

Announcing the Stranger’s Dream DLC for Bastion!

QUOTE
One of the most frequently asked questions we got since Bastion’s release this summer is, will there be any DLC for the game? We’ve brushed it aside, stating that we designed Bastion to be a complete, stand-alone experience and would never seek to extend the story through DLC. All this is true.

HOWEVER! In the weeks following the release of the game, we decided to put a little something together for the holidays as a show of thanks to our fans. So, on December 14, we’ll be pleased to bring you the Stranger’s Dream DLC for Bastion, which should give you some good reasons to come back to the game while preserving the core experience just as we intended. Here’s a sneak peek:

user posted image

The Stranger’s Dream DLC includes:

· The Stranger’s Dream: a new fully narrated Who Knows Where sequence, bigger and more challenging than the others. You’ll gain a bit more insight into Rucks’ backstory as well as the history of Caelondia if you can survive this fight.

· Score Attack Mode: a challenging new way to play through the story! You start at level one with all Spirits and Idols unlocked. Your combat performance is rated for efficiency, and all areas are repeatable.

· No-Sweat Mode: for those who just want to experience the story of Bastion, this mode provides unlimited chances to carry on from where you left off if you’re defeated in battle.

The Steam and XBLA versions of the game will also contain new Leaderboards for the Stranger’s Dream and Score Attack Mode.

To access the Stranger’s Dream sequence as well as Score Attack Mode, you need to have finished the game at least once. The Stranger’s Dream sequence will be available early on in your New Game Plus or Score Attack play-through.

How to Get the Stranger’s Dream DLC
Steam Users: You’ll receive this free update automatically through Steam when it becomes available.

Xbox LIVE Arcade Users: Start the game on December 14 or later to be prompted to download our new Title Update. You’ll see an option to download the new content from the main menu once you have the Title Update, which also fixes various minor issues in the game.

The Stranger’s Dream DLC will be available for 80 Microsoft Points ($1) on XBLA, which we can’t make free due to Microsoft policy, so it’s about as close as we could get. Though, since you’ll be getting at good chunk of new content, we think you’ll be satisfied with your purchase.

Non-Steam PC Users: We’ll be working with the various online vendors to update their versions of the Bastion installer so that you can download the latest version containing the update.

Google Chrome Users: Our newly-announced Google Chrome version will be getting this DLC as well, in the coming weeks. Your version of the game should update automatically when the DLC becomes available.

~ ~ ~

We hope you enjoy this little encore in the Bastion universe! Thanks again for making 2011 an amazing year for us at Supergiant Games, and here’s to many more!

Bastion developer moving on, no sequel planned

user posted image

QUOTE
Despite strong sales of Bastion, developer Super Giant Games has no intention of working on a sequel. The developer wishes to move on to a new game, instead.

In an interview with Eurogamer, team member Greg Kasavin stated, "Our stance around what we want to do in the future hasn't changed in light of Bastion's success. Thankfully Bastion has performed well enough to give us the resources to create another game on our own terms, meaning we can self-fund the project and take the time we need to get it right."

However, Kasavin refused to divulge what Super Giants Games' next game might be, saying, "We're a long way away from being able to talk about that next project in any kind of detail, though, except to say that our core team will be sticking together to create whatever it is." He added that they had the same policy towards Bastion, "We didn't reveal Bastion until more than a year into its development because we feel that games that aren't ready to be played aren't ready to be showed."

That's not to say that the developer isn't going to do another Bastion game in the future - but only if they feel a need to return to that universe, instead of looking for a lucrative payday. "We always intended for Bastion to be a stand-alone game though we did aim to create a rich world for it that could potentially support other stories," Kasavin revealed, "I don't know if we'll ever go back to the world of that game, though if we do it will be at a time when the team wants to do that more than anything else. It can't just be a financially motivated decision because that's not how Bastion was created in the first place. Ultimately we have a lot of ideas for our future and feel that creating a sense of surprise in all our games is very important."

Strategy Informer gave Bastion a rave review, awarding the game a 9.0/10 score in its release last July.

Just finished last night. took the Moving On option (rescued Zulf).
Will play again on + mode and choose the opposite ending.

9+ hrs on my first play through. Fav weapons are the dual gunslingers + machete.

Any other good combos to recommend ? I think the calamity cannon is too hard to aim.

Advisable to opt for the other ending on your first playthrough since the plot would flow much smoother. smile.gif

Supergiant Supports the Troops, puts Bastion on a Disc for Soldier

QUOTE
Bastion, the critically acclaimed platformer that's claimed or been nominated for a bathtub full of awards, isn't available on physical media. Not unless you are serving your country in Afghanistan, and your base's Internet service is terribly slow.

"Richard," a fan of the Supergiant game, wrote the developer's customer service address asking if there was any way to get a copy of the game on physical media. He was surprised when, instead of a form response, Bastion writer Greg Kasavin responded himself, and when the two realized downloading the game would take prohibitively long, just up and mailed Richard a copy of the game, plus some Bastion swag. All he asked in return is that Richard acquire a copy of Bastion on Steam when he returns home.

This is the PC version of the game; I'm not sure how this would have worked had Richard been trying to get the Xbox Live version. Still, it's very gracious of Supergiant to recognize a service member in this way, and certainly worth some publicity here.

Yahoo! I've FINALLY beaten Stranger's Dream with all 10 Shrine Idols activated. Took me so many nights with different weapons & spirits combination, not to forget all the rages especially when it comes to dealing with those Ura warriors. Stranger's Dream is definitely the hardest among all the 4 You Know Wheres.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've to get my sore finger tips treated. sweat.gif

Happy Holidays from Supergiant!

QUOTE
As the year (perhaps the WORLD?!) draws to a close, we wanted to recap some of the latest news on what’s happening with Bastion and with us at Supergiant.

Bastion Announcer Pack for Dota 2
We’re very happy to reveal the Bastion Announcer Pack for Dota 2, Valve’s popular and incredibly deep team-based action strategy game!
user posted image

Featuring more than 700 original lines of voiceover delivered by the voice of Bastion’s narrator, Logan Cunningham, the Bastion Announcer Pack for Dota 2 puts our special spin on one of the most complex and engaging competitive games we’ve ever played. A couple of us on team are huge fans of Dota 2 (the original DotA mod for Warcraft III is one of Supergiant cofounder Amir Rao’s all-time favorite games) so it was a real treat to contribute something to this game and collaborate with the amazing team at Valve. If you’d like to know more about Dota 2, visit the official web site.

Bastion for a Buck + More Stuff on Sale
For a limited time, Bastion is just $0.99 on the App Store! For good measure, this latest version of Bastion was just named iOS Game of the Year on Metacritic.com. Note: The iOS version of Bastion requires an iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch 5th generation, or iPad 2 or newer.

Also, the Steam version of Bastion is on sale as part of the Steam Holiday Sale.

Lastly, all Bastion merchandise in our online store is 20% off through the end of the year, including our new Scumbag Plushie.

Season’s Greetings from Supergiant
From all of us at Supergiant, we wish you a happy and safe holiday season, and best wishes for the year to come. Jen put the sentiment in the form of a wallpaper-sized visual here:

Thank you for your ongoing support. And a very special thanks to those of you who’ve been keeping tabs on us ever since before Bastion was released. This has been another great year for us — a year in which we got Bastion on Mac, Linux, the iPad, and the iPhone, and into the Humble Indie Bundle, and now Dota 2 — and we’re all the more excited to press onward as 2013 rolls around. We hope you’ll come along for the ride.

usually I totally won't go back to those indie-ish games but this was an exception. So much that I finished it. The narrator with the music is just something else really
