Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina could complete a £22 million move to arch-rivals Manchester United in the summer, according to a report in The Sun.

United are in the market for a new No.1 to succeed Edwin van der Sar, who has announced his intention to retire at the end of this season. They have been linked with a host of leading keepers, including Atletico Madrid prodigy David De Gea, Maarten Stekelenburg of Ajax and Schalke's Manuel Neuer.

This latest report, of a possible move for Liverpool's Reina, is likely to ruffle feathers at Anfield.

But the Reds are losing patience with the Spaniard, who has refused to commit his future to the club and appears to many to want out of Merseyside.

The 28-year-old signed a six-year deal with the club last April, but within two months was reportedly seeking a £15m move to Arsenal, which Liverpool rejected.

It is now claimed that, following Fernando Torres' transfer to Chelsea, Reina's agent is scrutinising the goalkeeper's contract for an exit clause similar to the one his international team-mate used to get out of Anfield.

However, Reina has stated that his Liverpool future will depend upon where they finish they season, as he seeks a return to Champions League football.

Liverpool's new owners have already underlined their ambition, breaking consecutive transfer records with the £22.8m acquisition of Luis Suarez from Ajax and the £35m purchase of Andrew Carroll from Newcastle.

Arsenal are expected to compete fiercely for Reina's signature, as they seek an experienced shot-stopper in the wake of costly errors by Manuel Almunia, Lucasz Fabianski and newcomer Wojciech Szczesny, whose mix-up with Laurent Koscielny last week cost the Gunners their chance of a first trophy in six years.

Rio Ferdinand set to miss England tie against Wales

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson does not expect Rio Ferdinand to be fit for England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales on 26 March.

The 32-year-old defender is sidelined with a calf injury picked up ahead of United's loss at Wolves on 5 February.

"Rio has been doing a bit of running. He will be ready for the game after the internationals," said Ferguson.

"I wouldn't have thought he would have a chance before that. I don't think it would be wise for him to be called up."

Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of action until April - but Nani could be set for a swift comeback against Marseille.

England captain Ferdinand hasn’t played since United’s 3-1 win against Aston Villa at the start of February because of a calf injury.

Nani missed Saturday's FA Cup quarter final win against Arsenal because of a deep gash to his shin.

Sir Alex Ferguson says Ferdinand is not likely to make a comeback in time for England’s European Championship qualifier with Wales on March 26, but hopes his Portuguese winger will be back in the squad for the Champions League second clash with Marseille.

He has pencilled in a return for Ferdinand for the Premier League trip to West Ham on April 2.

"Nani has had the stitches removed and has a chance for Tuesday," he said. "He's done some work on the bike, but the problem is that he hasn't trained yet."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed injuries to several key players could see him fielding another somewhat makeshift side in Tuesday's crucial Champions League return leg against Marseille.

With injuries to Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, and Anderson, the Scotsman was forced to drop Wayne Rooney next to Darron Gibson, supported by John O'Shea, in a five-man midfield against Arsenal on Saturday, with the England star playing as both an off-striker and a tracking tackler.

The Scotsman was also hesitant to play either of his eldest midfielders against the Gunners, but believes each came through their brief substitute appearances unscathed and should feature against the French side.

“I’ve got a host of injuries at the moment and need to get players back," he told reporters after the game.

“I couldn’t even risk Giggs and Scholes today because of the importance of Tuesday night’s game.

“Ryan did come on and give us around 28 minutes and Paul gave us 10 minutes or so and I think that’s just enough from them so they can still be ready for Tuesday.”

Ferguson was asked whether any of his current absentees were likely to be in contention for the match, but the Scot said it was unlikely.

“I don’t think so,” he remarked. “Jonny Evans is going to start training tomorrow [Sunday] but we have defensive cover with Wes Brown and John O’Shea.

“We could do with getting a midfielder back, but it doesn’t look like happening before Tuesday.”
