Yes, BD player can be dif in picture & sound quality. I own 5 BD player & always enjoy in the dif - Some sharing:
Pioneer LX91 (RM7K, Zone A, play some trick can view lots of the Zone B disc), i think generally this player looks the best among all
OPPO 93 (just imported it from US, Zone A + Zone B) - very good looking, with lots of function, sounds best
PAnasonic BDP-85 - from UK, Zone B, good picture quality but does not sound as good as the above 2, reasonale $ at RM1200, hand carry back from UK, so no custom + postage
Sony BDP-765 - Mid range sony model, I am not satisfy with Sony. not sharp & load enough
Samsung 5900 - 3d capable, very colorful & vivid. got at RM600 only during sales.

If u watch a very good quality BD at 42" LCD/Plasma, I would say not much dif. U will notice dif when watch at 60" size.

but if u watch with HD projector at large screen, u can appreciate the dif, especially the not so good looking blu-ray disc like The good, the bad & the ugly, the deer hunter, in the line of fire, Tombstone. the top tier player will not turn it into best quality but will produce very satisfy quality. the not so good player will produce awful quality.
