you can get a BD player for <1k nowadays no?

if you are watching BD at 1080p on a fullHD TV i think there may not be discernible differences

as far as I can tell, the money comes in when you need to watch 480p DVDs and we need to use the upscaling engine in the DVD player; more expensive players have better engines and results in better picture

silly question here about upscaling...

if "blur" 480p DVD upscaled to 1080p quality
Will the "blur" 480p source become "sharp" 1080p? or still "blur" 1080p due to do source?

If you have a PS3 as a BD player..thats considered good enough oledi...unless you wanna go super high end that has advance upscalling of DVD sources, superior CD playback, 7.1 multichannel, 3D, dual HDMI, exotic construction materials etc player....with the amount of money you spend on it....you will swear there are differences even before unpacking it!! But for peasants like us...there is no point buying a RM5K bluray player

A relatively cheap Toyota Vios can get you from A to B. So can Mercedes. Is the Mercedes worth it? It's up to individual to decide.

3k to 5k BD player? (I though the highest now only around RM 1k+) no need la, just waste of money.

Want DVD upscale, HDMI DVD player still the best.

As for BD, not much different that noticeable if got, even't got different also not worth as no laser head is last longer forever.

I would add gettin a region free bdp if u tend to get bds frm all over.. less hassle tat way..

I have seen differences between BD players. They are easier to spot the minor differences between them in test patterns rather than in real life content. The bigger ur screen the easier it is to notice the differences.

I though the is no differences if using HDMI output, as far I know not much people will do component or any others output beside HDMI now..

Andrew,

As I explained in the post above, there are differences. Those differences I explained are thru HDMI. On real life, content, its difficult to notice them. The differences are mainly due to the reasons I explain. The other differences between BD players are mainly due to build in sharpness when the output 1080p. Its there. Its however very minor on moving content unless u hv a very big screen. The differences can be minimized if we can output the BD players the same.

The PS3 slim is fine. A new firmware actually enabled controls to turn off Deep Colour. The only negative I can see with the PS3 slim now is that it does not output in YCbCr 4:2:2 but only outputs in YCbCr 4:4:4 if u select YCbCr output. The slim bitstreams so u've got ur audio covered which was the main complaint about the fat PS3.

Sorry I misunderstanding your Spoiler part.

Yaya, the YCbCr 4:4:4 and YCbCr 4:2:2 color spaces & also support of deep color do differentiate the output quality but very minor and not so noticeable by human eye unless compare it side by side.

Thank you for ALL the explanation...

Than I should save my money to buy a REGION FREE HD Media Bluray player - Dune Max, maybe..
How about this player, anyone using this player? good enough? is it confirm is REGION FREE player? I have friend in UK, so region free bluray player will be important for me!! at first I want to wait for the REGION FREE HD media 3D BLURAY player, but I already confirm PS3 slim can support 3D, so no need to buy 3D bluray player since is expensive now..

Give some advice - DUNE MAX thumbup.gif

experiment with it. I think there's a difference using component output in picture and sound. the colors look less tense and mid-tone sounds better. Not really sure why but suspect something to do with de-compression.

I dont hv d Max but I do hv d prime n well.. its not a bad machine but it has its quirks.. I couldnt get rgn change for bd playback until I had a patch[frmware] installed..
But then again, its a all-play-dwnld-anyting-u-thrw-at-it..

If solely as a rgn free bdp.. I d choose d oppo..

I hv the Max. It works as advertised. The latest firmware is great. Again, its also one of those machines that only outputs in YCbCr 4:4:4.

HDI continues to work on firmware updates so, there could be another firmware that improves it further. It uses the Sigma chipset at its core and does enuf well not to complain about it.

I am interesting to get another BD player, I need it to be region FREE.

What should I get?
  • Dune HD Max (RM 1600) or
  • Oppo BDP 83 or 93 (What is the price in Malaysia, who is selling it?)
Beside above two model, any others recommendation?

Get the BDP-93 if all u will be watching are mkvs and original BDs as well as SACDs and DVD-Audios.

Get the Max if u want to watch BD isos or backed up BDs together with mkvs, listen to all sorts of audio streams and all kinds of video streams.

U need to get the Oppo from SLT Technologies in Spore. Pls check with them if the region free mod is included in the price.

One option is last years Dune model...the Prime 3.0...(if you can find it at a discounted price)...after installing a patch, you just need to press so buttons on the remote to change the region.
