I bought Sony Home Theatre with bluray player last month, model BDV-E970W. When I connect it to the Internet, the unit asked whether I want to upgrade to a newer version of the software. The current version was M.0R04.735. The new version is 752. The system downloaded the software and automatically updated it with no error message. But after the update I cannot play bluray disc anymore! it used to be able to play but now it just hangs and i cannot eject the disc, i have to switch off and on, then keep pressing the eject button before i can get the disc out.

Has anyone faced this problem before? Can we downgrade back to the older version of the software?

I sent my unit to the Sony Service Center on Thursday, along with half a page of description of what happened, requesting for a downgrade to 735 from 752.

So far ... have not heard anything from them yet.

I checked the repair tracking web site - the status says "waiting for parts".

Usually firmware from internet tend to screw the hardware. The best is to get 1 to 1 replacement.

Thanks for the tips. But does Sony give 1 to 1 replacements? Has anyone tried that?

I don't have that many, less than 10 discs. I tried 3 and I had so much of trouble getting it to eject once the thing hangs and I didn't wnat to try it anymore. DVDs are OK.

Anyway, Sony Center sent me an SMS yesterday saying the repair was completed, 1 week after I sent it in.

I was told that they had to replace the whole circuit board - something about the updated firmware screwing it up.

Moral of the stroy - don't friggin touch Release 752 of firmware!

I will plug that in tonite and see if it still works and see if it is on 735 like before or is it on 752.

And keep in mind I've had it for less than 1 month and this happens.

Very disappointing, and Sony BDV-E970W is supposed to be a "high end" unit.

Hey, the system automatically prompted me when I plugged it into the Internet OK?

I expect people who come up with such products to have properly figure the issues before they release it to the customers.
