bro you should read more about kia in Wiki la
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kia_Motorsno doubt kia founded in 1944 but that time only doing steel tubing and bicycle parts by hand,
The company opened its first integrated automotive assembly plant in 1973, that is for assembly only, not building car also (just like Naza), no double they can learn how to assembly a car but not building/manufacture a car.
At 1986, they partnership with ford and produce severer Mazda (Ford own Mazda) and Ford car. Just like porton at 1985 partnership with mitsu and produce saga, iswara and wira. The so called 90% local manufacturer WAJA onli launch in late 90s.
if not mistaken, they only start building their own car in 90s but got bankruptcy due to 1997 crisis. They really come from a hard way, not like our proton, being pampered and protected.
I would said, Kia and Proton almost start at the same time, but look at today's stand. Proton still being pampered and protected buy Kia is like 10 years ahead (or maybe more?)
Worst is Proton did not go forward but goes backward to 1985 and doing re-badge again for the Inspira...to boost the sales? to regain reputation? However this move benefit us as consumer to pay less 20-30k in getting this mitsu lancer
Miserably, I have to admit to your points. Both of my wife and myself be the Proton car owner for more than 10 years, I do not feel the pride and glory to the fact of Malaysia producing our nation car, but I only feel the pains of government protectionism:
1. Nation car caused other car brands much expensive by raising the taxes of Proton rivals. Malaysian were suffered with extra burden to the car loan.
2. Government pour in the money (our taxes money!) to help up Proton, which conversely should use the money to develop the country, or use it in such a way to really benefit the people.
3. Seriously impacted Malaysia image as not actualize the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA).
Probably, revoke such protectionism will be the only way to make Proton getting more aggressive and competitive, and make us proud of our nation car.
