because of the home grown rules where a club needs to have 8 homegrown players out of the 25 registered (not including under 21 players) in order to compete in the league...

QUOTE(niBee @ Feb 1 2011, 06:49 AM) because of the home grown rules where a club needs to have 8 homegrown players out of the 25 registered (not including under 21 players) in order to compete in the league... A club does NOT ened 8 homegrown players. Instead, they can only have a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players above 21.So if you register 17 non-homegrown players and no homegrown ones at all, you're still within the rules. In effect, most teams don;t really have much pressure. Chelsea only registered 4 homegrown players, for example. It's not Englishness that has inflated their prices, but belonging to an English club. English clubs generally have more financial muscle on average. So, while Madrid and Barca don't need to pay inflated prices to prise away the best talents from other La Liga clubs because of the huge financial disparity, English clubs tend to be able to rebuff the advances of bigger/richer clubs because they do not need the money as much. A lot of this has to do with the fairer distribution of TV money from collective agreements, whereas in Italy and Spain, the big clubs negotiate separate and far more lucrative TV deals. P.S. Also, homegrown does not have to be English. Fabregas is homegrown according to the FA, for example. This post has been edited by minority: Feb 1 2011, 07:41 AM |

A big reason is scarcity of good English talent but another I believe is clubs wanting to make back what they've invested in a player. Signing school kids and developing them from young, clubs invest a fair sum of money.

Agree with minority, onwe of the reason is due to the inflated price of the league itself. Buying English players basically mean buying from an English Club. Comparing to buying from say..a Swedish club, the value of 10m pound is more to that Swedish club compared to an English club.

It is only inflated in EPL...
Assume our M-League standard as EPL and flooded with foreign player... what is the motivation for you to watch??? Of coz is our own local player... they can generates tons of income... thus they had to take into the consideration for this factor too... |

Yup Oil Sheiks and tycoons have inflated prices but this is true for a player of any nationality. English clubs merely want compensation for developing young players. If you spent say RM 10,000 modifying your car, you'd want to be compensated for that no?

Also the fact that January transfer window is a short one. Thus they want to quickly complete the deal. They could get the same player cheaper at the end of the season, but from now till then a lot can happen, and they are not willing to take the rist

A big contributing factor is that buying English players reduces the risk of a flop import. Well known that most foreign players may take a season or two to "blend in" with the demands of the English game. Many never make it at all. Buying a local player who already grew up with the game reduces the risk significantly, so clubs are willing to pay additional fees on top of that.
Kinda like why it's cheaper to buy new houses that are still under construction, as opposed to 2nd-hand houses. |

There's no need to acclimatize to a new country, no language barrier means no language tutor and there's no risk of culture conflicts. In a sense, local born players are kinda like 'plug n play', there's no need to make extra adjustments to fit in the player.Kinda like why it's cheaper to buy new houses that are still under construction, as opposed to 2nd-hand houses. |

QUOTE(MrFay @ Feb 2 2011, 04:22 PM) Try search in wiki n type top 10 transfers of all time yea... He is the most expensive ever English player in football history. Much more expensive than some star players like David Beckham, Michael Owen, Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Darren bent etc. Sure he has his own value for Daglish to buy him at such price.Featuring of cr,kaka, zidane, figo, torres, etoo n ibrahimovic among the top 10 Suddenly there is andy carroll in 7th place? |
