A problem requiring a "silicon fix" is bad news in the chipset business, and sadly that's what Intel is announcing. Its new Intel 6 Series chipset, Cougar Point, has been found to have a flaw, something to do with the SATA controller. Intel is indicating that the ports can "degrade over time," leading to poor i/o performance down the road. All shipments have been stopped and a fix has been implemented for new deliveries, but it sounds like recalls will be starting soon for those with this ticking time bomb silicon within. It isn't a critical problem right now, though, so if you own a Sandy Bridge Core i5 or Core i7 system keep computing with confidence while looking for a recall notice, but it is bad news for Intel's bottom line: the company is advising a $300 million hit to revenue. Source: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/intel-f...pments-stopped/OMG!!!! Will this effect those who have already bought sandy bridge laptops? And if it does, does that mean they will be recalled? Will this also affect upcoming laptops like the ASUS N53SN's release date?

QUOTE(astria @ Feb 1 2011, 12:46 AM) problem with new tech... i think chance of recall is pretty low... OEMs would juz wait for the rig to OEM and then they replace the mobo... so yeah, call up the svc center and ask them wat's their solution... Thank god the N53SN hasn't arrived in Malaysia yet. If not I would have bought it. Blessing in disguise. Do you think they would fix the problem by then?

http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/In...r-Point-recall/According to this, it seems HM65 is also affected. Maybe those who have already bought Sandy Bridge laptops will be able to claim warranty when it fails. To identify those laptops that have problems, look at the chipset number. For example, H67, HM67 etc. etc. This post has been edited by 24seven: Feb 1 2011, 03:23 AM

Hmm... do you think companies like Asus who haven't released their laptops won't care and just continue clearing the flawed stock that has already been produced?

QUOTE(Eugene91 @ Feb 1 2011, 11:02 AM) Some will blame the brands (especially those who don't know about SB's problem).. Then it looks like acer, Lenovo and HP will get bashed because of this.

QUOTE(Trance4eva @ Feb 1 2011, 06:27 PM) I thought only P67 and H67 based motherboard only are affected. The acer, lenovo and hp are HM65. I don't think they are affected. Im using Lenovo Y560p btw. Hopefully nthg........ Unfortunately, all Intel 6 Series chipset are affected, including HM65. But according to one of the articles I read, most laptops won't be affected because there are no problems with port 0 and port 1 and most laptops only use 2 ports, unless of course, they use port 2-6. But to be on the safe side, better not buy any laptops for now.
