My SGS of 7 months is getting more and more laggy, cannot tahan edi, so I think I'm finally going to flash Speedmod kernel. Currently on stock 2.2.1 with no fancy bell and whistles cos I damn scared will brick my phone!

Just a few noobie questions abt Speedmod:

1. Do I have to root my phone before flashing the kernel? Or just straight away follow the steps on http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010...to-install.html?

2. Is the latest version K13C the best version? Or which versions would you guys recommend?

3. Do I need 2e recovery to flash the kernel?

4. How do I uninstall it?

Thanks! smile.gif

1) No rooting required
2) You can say so tongue.gif
3) If you're using odin to flash, 2e recovery is not needed
4) Flash back the stock kernel using odin

You can try tegrak's lagfix if you are willing to sacrifice 1.5 gb of apps. Smoother than speedmod's

Thanks!

Where do I get the stock kernel? Also, will flashing kernel erase all data on my phone?

Don't think I'll go for Tegra's lagfix....got too much apps! I only have 1.37gig free. I don't use Apps2SD cos I occasionally use my micro-SD as my camera's SD card when I'm travelling tongue.gif. I think even Speedmod will be a vast improvement over the current situation.

lol. i'm not sure. usually i'll reflash back to stock rom in case to send for service

But I am on stock rom...I'm just worried because there seems to be some battery drainage issues with K13C. I guess I can flash to another kernel if it turns out to be true.

Btw, will flashing the kernel erase all data on my phone? Like what happens with a reset/firmware upgrade?

nono, will not erase anything. another kernel besides stock? just disable any lagfixes or tweaks before you flash. don't have to flash from stock kernel

Yea, maybe flash to another version of Speedmod kernel if K13C really drain battery. Noted about disabling the lagfix and tweaks. Will try it out this weekend. Thanks for your help! smile.gif

if you're moving from one speedmod version to another, don't have to disable anything before flashing smile.gif

only disable if you're flashing from a different kernel. for example, speedmod -> voodoo and etc

Ooh ok, that's a relief! I was a bit worried that I will forget to disable before changing versions, so I made a memo on the phone. blush.gif Not very tech-savvy, so if I accidentally bricked my phone somehow, I probably will panic like hell.

Hi bunnymaker, do give a feedback after u hav flashed to another version to verify if K13C drains battery.
Because currently mine 1 is stock rom + speedmod K13C. I charge my phone every end of the day.
Mainly use for sms. Data network is not activated.
Hopefully other version will stay a bit longer, at least 1 and a half day.  tongue.gif

Sure! I'm still on stock firmware, also charge my phone daily, but I have data/wifi (maybe on abt 2 hours per day) and use it for music/video/ebooks (3-4 hours daily). Usually before I sleep, I will have about 30%-40% left, but I hardly use my phone when I'm working apart from the occasional call/sms/calendar entry.

If you're only using for sms and still need to recharge daily, then I think K13C might be the problem. But will verify once I've tried it! smile.gif

Btw, if I factory reset my phone, it should uninstall (is this the right term even?) the Speedmod kernel?

Thanks!
